AE list...See Also Eligible list.
Also Eligible list...Some races will have more horses entered than can be accommodated. In that case the "overflow" are entered on the "also eligible" list. Those entrants will enter the field of runners if there are scratches from the main body.
Apprentice...Term for a beginning jockey. See also, Bugboy.
Bugboy...Slang for apprentice jockey. So named because there is an asterisk (or "bug") in the program indicating the apprentice weight allowance.
Claiming Race...All horses in these races are essentially "up for sale". For example, in a $50,000 claiming race, all the runners can be purchased for $50,000. The object is to keep races competitive by forcing owners and trainers to find a level where their horses can compete, but not dominate.
Daily Double...Horses bet must finish first in two consecutive races.
Exacta...Horses bet must finish first and second in exact order in a particular race. Ex., if you bet the 6-4 exacta you win only if the 6 horse wins, and the 4 horse runs second.
Exacta Box...Multiplies your bet in order to include all combinations of your horses such that you win if horses bet finish first and second in any order. Ex., if you box the 4 and 6 horses, you now have two bets, a 4-6 exacta, and a 6-4 exacta--so you win if 4 and 6 run first and second in either order: 4-6 or 6-4.
Furlong...One-eighth of a mile.
Maiden...A horse that has yet to win a race.
MTO..."Main track only". Turf races occasionally include "main track only" entrants. They will be added into the field if the race is taken off the turf and scratches can accommodate them.
Parlay...Term for rolling a winning bet over into another race. Ex., a win parlay over three consecutive races means that if the first horse bet wins, the ticket is not cashed but the profits are rolled over and bet into the next race, and so on...However, since all winnings are "reinvested" into the next leg of the parlay, the parlay ends as soon as one portion of the wager loses. On the other hand, using the principle of compounding, a winning parlay can rack up large profits in a short time span.
Place bet...Horse bet must finish first or second.
Quinella...Horses bet can finish first and second in any order. Ex., if you bet a 4-6 quinella, you win if 4 and 6 run first and second in either order: 4-6 or 6-4.
Show bet...Horse bet must finish first, second, or third.
Triple (also known as trifecta)...Horses bet must finish first, second, and third in exact order. Ex, if you bet a 5-4-8 triple, you win only if the 5 wins and the 4 runs second and the 8 runs third.
Triple Box...Multiplies your bet in order to include all combinations of your horses such that you win if horses bet finish first ,second, and third in any order. Ex., if you box the 5-4-8 triple, you now have six bets, a 4-5-8 triple, and a 4-8-5 triple, and 5-4-8, 5-8-4, 8-4-5, and 8-5-4--so you win if 4, 5, and 8 run first, second, and third in any order..
Win bet...Horse bet must finish first.
