Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

It wasn't a bad day -- but as we noted Saturday, the short fields were probably better played if able to watch the 'probable pay' readouts. Small value plagued us.

Three winners on top in ten races (we lost two races that were moved off-turf) (Belmont, $6.80; Monmouth, $5.00; Turfway, $2.60).

A nice mix of boxed exactas and tris all around (we collected something in seven of the ten races) -- including a cold tri in the Belmont BC H'cp, although there was no tri offered because of the short field. But again, the value just wasn't there. All we needed to put us over the top however was one more nice hit -- and that makes the disappointment of the afternoon the Ky Cup Classic. We correctly tabbed Roses in May on top and had that one keyed in a $4 tri over our next three picks which included 11-1 Pie N Burger, who ran second, and 51-1 rank outside Country Be Gold, who looked a lock to complete our tri but hung late and was just nipped for the show spot. The tri with an 8-1 shot finishing third paid $44/$2. Gotta believe if our 51-1 shot hangs on the tri would clunk up over $100/$2 and with a $4 play that would have put us well into the black for the day (It should also be noted that Country Be Gold was less than a length shy of completing our $5 exacta play). Oh well, there's always next week.

WAGERED: $368.00
COLLECTED: $314.75

Turf wagers are turf only

Belmont: Floral Park H'cp G3 $100K

Feline Story 6-5
Cologny 3-1
Travelator 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Cologny.
Collected $8.25 on the WP (xxx, $3.30).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $32.80 on the ex box ($16.40/$2).

Cologny...State-bred has done OK in open company including a small stake win over this track just prior to Saratoga.
Feline Story...3YO has shown some flashes and is capable here on best. Having a little trouble getting to the winners circle this year however.
Travelator...Comes back a week after a dull effort in Delaware stake. We had her underneath eventual winner Ebony Breeze in our selections that day -- but the fifth-place finish without an apparent excuse leaves us a little less enthusiastic today.

Belmont: Belmont BC H'cp G2 $200K

Senor Swinger 2-1
Stroll 3-5
BA Way 10-1

Hotstufanthensome scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Senor Swinger.
Collected $23.25 on the WP ($6.80, 2.50).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $20.00 on the ex box ($10.00/$2).

Senor Swinger...Not especially enamored with the Baffert runners in NY this season -- but this guy has been going well since Churchill and was an OK seventh in the Million with trouble and won the Arlington H'cp prior to that. Prado rides.
Stroll...Mott trainee would be the top pick but has been off three months. Might need one.
BA Way...Rounded into good career form earlier this season and then faltered a little when dropped into graded company. This bunch looks a little more suitable however.
Hotstufanthensome.

Belmont: Jerome H'cp G2 $150K

Teton Forest 2-1
Ice Wynnd Fire 6-5
Mahzouz 23-1

Wager: $5 WP on Ice Wynnd Fire.
Collected $6.75 on the WP (xxx, 2.70).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $12.40 on the ex box ($12.40/$2).
...$2 tri key Ice Wynnd Fire over next three.
Ran 2/1-5-6.

Ice Wynnd Fire...Frankel 3YO's only clunker was speedy Florida sprint. Good third in 7F Spa stake last time should have him set up well for this one-turn mile.
Teton Forest...Should go well but coming off three month break and as we said earlier, not thrilled with Baffert's NY tries this summer.
Coded Warning...Uncoupled Frankel entry-mate will certainly be in the hunt and could better this rating.
West Virginia.

Monmouth: City Zip $60K

Knight of Darkness 3-2
Bola Soup 6-1
Frisky Spider 5-2

Wager: $5 WP on Knight of Darkness.
Collected $20.50 on the WP ($5.00, 3.20).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 tri key Knight of Darkness over next three.
Ran 1/3-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-6.

Knight of Darkness...Had a little bit of a layoff then came back to run fourth in a small stake here last time despite trouble. Expect better today.
Frisky Spider...Speedy sort might be ready for top effort making turf-to-dirt mover.
Beat the Traffic...New England invader also has some early foot.
Wild Jam.

Delaware: Sussex H'cp $100K

Off the turf
Private Lap 2-5
Run to Victory 7-2
American Freedom 2-1

Only three ran.

Wager: $5 WP on Royal Regalia.
...$2 exacta box top two, sub next if scratch.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Wagers canceled.

Royal Regalia...Only two starts this year but they indicate some marked improvement.
Tam's Terms...Depending on who scratches this one might get that easy lead again today.
Spruce Run...Last looks like an aberration. Went well on soft turf three back.
Dr Kashnikow.
Foufa's Warrior.
Lady of the Future.
American Freedom.
Change Course.

Pimlico: Schapiro Memorial BC H'cp $150K

Off the turf
Lusty Latin 9-2
Foufa's Warrior 5-1
Pay the Preacher 4-1

Wager: $5 WP on Mr O'Brien.
...$2 exacta box top two, sub next if scratch.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
...$1 tri key Mr O'Brien over next three, sub next underneath if scratch.

...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Wagers canceled.

Mr O'Brien...Has been knocking heads with legit G1 competitors last three -- this bunch is easier.
Tam's Terms...A couple of good, improving efforts off of a brief layoff.
Hotstufanthensome...Also showing good, improving form this summer.
Pay the Preacher.
Dr Kashnikow.
Lady of the Future.
Foufa's Warrior.

Retama Park: Texas Hall of Fame $100K

Rare Cure 5-2
Shakethemhatersoff 13-1
Desert Darby 2-1

Wager: $5 WP on Twilight Vision.
Ran 4th at 9-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.

Twilight Vision...Has come to life since moving into new barn.
Late Expectations...Arguably better on turf and returns to that surface.
Desert Darby...Asmussen is OK off the layoff and it's been a long time since this one missed the tri.
Rare Cure.

Turfway: Ky Cup Juv Filly $100K

Punch Appeal 2-1
Carmandia 7-2
Winning Season 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Winning Season.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $14.00 on the ex box ($28.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $75.60 on the tri box ($151.20/$2).

Winning Season...Lukas/Overbrook 2YO showed improvement in second start and might step forward again going two-turns.
Punch Appeal...Trouble start when finishing fifth last time against the promising Sense of Style in a Saratoga G2. Was going well in Florida prior and expect return to that form although two-turns is a question mark.
Im a Dixie Girl...Stepped it up last time to take the Bassinet a repeat of that race would make her tough -- but she's another trying two turns for first time.
Carmandia.

Turfway: Ky Cup Juv G3 $100K

Greater Good 6-1
Magna Graduate 11-1
Norainonthisparty 34-1

Wager: $5 WP on Storied Cat.
Ran 5th at 3-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-5.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-4-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-4-5-6.

Storied Cat...Has moved forward in each of three tries so far. Could be tough if able to negotiate the trip.
United...Got some two-turn experience on the turf last time. J Velazquez rides.
Greater Good...Like the improvement he showed last time when stretched to 7F. Could bode well for 1M trip today.
Sequoia Grove.
Magna Graduate.

Turfway: Ky Cup Classic H'cp G2 $350K

Roses in May 1-5
Pie N Burger 11-1
Sonic West 8-1

Wager: $5 W on Rose in May.
Collected $6.50 on the W ($2.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$5 exacta Roses in May over Country Be Gold.
Ran 1/4.
...$4 tri key Roses in May over next three.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Roses in May...This one is 4-4 in 2004 and comes out of a G1 victory in the Whitney against a legit graded stakes field. This bunch is not that quality and if Roses fires anywhere near his best shot he's a lock here.
Country Be Gold...7YO was a graded stakes competitor earlier in his career. In decent form this summer.
Adreamisborn...NoCal invader should be rolling late.
Pie N Burger.

Turfway: Turfway BC G3 $175K

Susan's Angel 6-1
Mayo On the Side 5-2
Angela's Love 9-5

Wager: $5 WP on Miss Fortunate.
Ran 4th at 4-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $31.00 on the ex box ($62.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $63.70 on the tri box ($127.40/$2).

Miss Fortunate...Mott trainee is having a good season and comes out of a good second-place finish in G3 Gardenia.
Angela's Love...Won Gardenia last time beating top pick. Got first jump in that race and is capable of repeating with a similar trip.
Susan's Angel...Was going well prior to dull try in G1 Alabama. Expect better today.
Mayo On the Side.

Turfway: Ky Cup Sprint G3 $100K

Level Playingfield 10-1
Cuvee 6-5
Swift Attraction 4-1

Wager: $5 WP on Heckle.
Ran 4th at 8-5.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 tri box top three.
Ran 1-2-4.

Heckle...Was off over a year and put in a good effort in Saratoga comeback last time. Expect improvement today. Might be able to get a line on this one by watching Belmont's Jerome. This one finished in front of Coded Warning last time and Coded goes in the Belmont stake today.
Cuvee...Super promising as a 2YO then laid-up until this May. On the bench since that comeback try in a Churchill stake but trainer can have them ready off of a break.
Level Playingfield...Could be set up for a good try coming out of a string of turf sprints.
