Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

We scratched and clawed our way to a few bucks this week -- but overall it was frustrating. In the Peter Pan we used the winner Purge on top -- but our fifth pick completed the exacta -- and he was only used by us in case of a scratch, which didn't happen. At Pimlico we were beaten by a longshot coming out of a last-place finish at Charles Town. Frankly, given that set-up, the 24-1 price looked short! Our best handicapping of the day came at Churchill where our top three completed the tri -- but we were asleep at the wheel with our plays as it was easy to project Lady Tak as a short-priced favorite. We needed to take a stand on some gimmicks with her on top to bolster our bankroll.

At Calder we just lost the stake fair and square. The winner had won his turf debut last time -- beating our top pick, so we couldn't argue with anyone taking the nice 7-1 price there. We also missed a logical contender at Hollywood -- again, we just went another way this week but wouldn't argue with those who jumped on the winner. And finally, at Bay Meadows, the stakes winner look a tad over-matched in our opinion -- but you might have been swayed to play on the "first off the claim" angle where the trainer was showing a solid 30% stat.

Overall we had two winners in six races (Belmont, $6.80; Churchill, $3.00) -- and a couple more of our top picks ran second. We also had a small smattering of gimmicks.

WAGERED: $276.00

Turf wagers are turf only

Belmont: Peter Pan G2 $200K

Purge 2-1

Ran 1-3-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-3-6-7.

Purge...Took it on the chin from Smarty Jones last two. Distance is still a question mark but might go well here at Belmont where 9Fs is one-turn.
Master David...Still not convinced on this guy but a rebound to Wood form makes him tough.
Friends Lake...Let's forgive the Derby. His prior form was good enough to compete here.

Pimlico: Ben Cohen $50K

Take Achance On Me 6-5
Rudirudy 39-1

Wager: $5 WP on Shades of Sunny.
Ran 6th at 12-1.

Shades of Sunny...Wins more than 33% at the trip -- but the question is the layoff. Tough if ready.
Quest of Fate...Solid turf sprint win at Atlantic City in latest. 4-4 over the strip. Post is a negative.
Take Achance On Me...Just missed in $50K stake two back and then had trouble in a G3 last time. Fits here.

Stalking Tiger...Good career so far including a near-miss in a turf stake two back.

Bay Meadows: Saratoga H'cp $55K

Onebigbag 8-1
R Baggio 5-1
