Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Ugh. Well, we're going to have one of thse weeks every once in awhile. Since we simply review the weekend's top stakes races -- and don't cherry-pick, looking for only races that particularly appeal to us -- on occasion the stars are going to align against us. Happily it doesn't happen too often. All we can do is regroup and look forward to next week.

No winners on top in nine tries. A small mix of gimmicks -- the major disappointment being that we missed the nice payoffs at Bay Meadows as our 2-3-4 picks came in -- but we had taken a stand with out top pick because of the short field. As such we missed out on the $82.80/$2 exacta and $275.20/$2 tri. Those prices certainly would have helped us into a more respectable finish this week.

WAGERED: $354.00
COLLECTED: $24.50

Turf wagers are turf only

Belmont: Bold Ruler H'cp G3 $100K

Canadian Frontier 20-1
Key Deputy 3-1
First Blush 9-2

Wager: $5 W on Shake You Down.
Ran 6th (stumbled coming out of the gate) at 4-5.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-6.
...$2 tri key Shake You Down over next three.
Ran 6/2-3-4.

Shake You Down...Oaklawn Beyer might add a little value to this play -- but this one loves Belmont so expect a return to top form.
Key Deputy...Lightly raced 4YO from Mott might be rounding into top effort.
First Blush...Likes the track and comes in of off a couple of imrpoving-form races.
Secret Run.

Belmont: Nassau County BC G2 $200K

Bending Strings 5-2
Grey Traffic 8-5
A Lulu Ofa Menifee 21-1

Frenchglen, Forestier scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Grey Traffic.
Collected $9.00 on the WP (xxx, 3.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-5.

Grey Traffic...Banged out a huge debut win in April and has since been switched to Frankel. Trainer is 37% first time in his barn. Expect a good effort.
Pletcher entry...Frenchglen is preferred. Third to Madcap Escapade two back. Followed-up with huge alw win last time. Cherry Bomb is improving.
Forestier..."Hidden" entry from Pletcher is a solid 4-2-2-0 so far.
A Lulu Ofa Menifee.

Calder: Carterista $75K

Mr Livingston 11-1
Believe I Can Fly 15-1
Marco's Word 4-1

Wager: $5 WP on Magic Mecke.
Ran 8th at 2-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 6-8.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 3-6-7-8.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
3-6-7-8.

Magic Mecke...Might have been a little overmatched in last two. Finds cozy spot here and will appreciate return to Calder.
Hear No Evil...Might be able to sneak away early which makes him dangerous.
Super Frolic...Fits with this bunch.
Marco's Word.
Mr Livingston.

Pimlico: Hilltop $50K

Western Ransom 1-1
Art Fan 12-1
Star of Anziyan 77-1

Slewsville scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Honey Ryder.
Ran 5th at 4-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-5-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-5-6-7.

Honey Ryder...Comes out of two good thirds to the very nice Lucifer's Stone. Pletcher filly finds a cozy stakes spot.
Western Ransom...Dickinson filly was in front of top pick last time.
Colettic entry...Slewville stretches out after two good sprints. Nice angle.
He Loves Me.
Earthquake ride.

Churchill: Matt Winn $100K

Fire Slam 1-1
Cuvee 8-5
Hasslefree 14-1

Wager: $5 WP on Wildcat Shoes.
Ran 4th at 2-1.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$2 tri key Wildcat Shoes over next two.
Ran 4/1-2.
...$1 tri key top three.
Ran 1-2-4.

Wildcat Shoes...Likes Churchill and 6F could be his best distance.
Fire Slam...Was not flattered by Derby performance of Lexington first and third. And the cutback from two-turns to sprint is tricky. However we think he fits here.
Cuvee...Super solid 2YO threw in a clunker in the BC Juvie. Off since and trainer not particularly strong off the layoff.

Hollywood: LA Times H'cp G3 $150K

Pohave 4-1
Marino Marini 5-2
Summer Service 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on Cayoke.
Ran 5th at 5-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $15.50 on the ex box ($31.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5-9.

Cayoke...Comes out of three straight very fast turf sprints. Bona fide turf performer but he's fast and will be the one to beat if holds form on dirt.
Marino Marini...Up the track behind Pico Central two back and followed-up with a good third in a G2 at Keeneland. That's a little dicey however as top two that day faltered in their next starts.
Pohave...Third to Pico Central last time. Capable on best.
Seattle Shamus.

Hollywood: Jim Murray Memorial H'cp $350K

Rhythm Mad 8-5
Continental Red 5-2
Gassan Royal 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Ballingarry.
Ran 4th at 3-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-7.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-4-7.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-4-7.

Ballingarry...Closed to be third in this race in second start of 2003. Was behind Storming Home and Denon that day -- today's field not as tough so a duplicate of that pattern might be enough.
Runaway Dancer...Kind of a question mark at the distance but usually closes strongly to be in the hunt.
Continental Red...Chuck out the troubled trip two back and this 8YO is typically competitive.
Gassan Royal.
Right Proof.

Hollywood: Mervyn Leroy H'cp G2 $150K

Even the Score 5-1
Ender's Shadow 15-1
Total Impact 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Buckland Manor.
Ran 5th at 5-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.

Buckland Manor...Last time this one went turf-to-dirt he scored a big Beyer stakes win.
Total Impact...Second to Dynever in San Bernadino last time and that one might be a star in the making in the division.
Olmodavor...Usually in the hunt.
Even the Score.

Bay Meadows: Yerba Buena BC H'cp G3 $125K

AB Noodle 7-1
Marwood 5-1
Hooked On Niners 3-1

Wager: $5 W on Arabic Song.
Ran 4th at 4-5.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$2 tri key Arabic Song over next three.
Ran 4/1-2-3.

Arabic Song...Drysdale trainee ships up from SoCal where she had trouble in seasonal debut. Expect better today.
Hooked On Niners...Beate fave last two will be rolling late.
Marwood...Hollendorfer filly just missed in stakes debut at 18-1.
AB Noodle.
