Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Kind of a strange afternoon in that scratches came into play more than usual.

In the Caesar's Wish at Pimlico, our top two flip-flopped for an $8.80/$2 exacta -- but we didn't collect anything there because our original second pick scratched. At Churchill our top pick of Rock Hard Ten scratched out of the Derby Trail and our next three came in -- but wagering-wise we were left out in the cold after the scratch and missed the $15.20/$2 exacta and $33.40/$2 tri. And we took a stand with the 1-9 fave in Hollywood's Melair, putting that Baffert entry over our second pick and being done with it -- we then watched as the entry came in 1-2, with our third and fourth picks just behind, meaning we missed the fairly generous $88.00/$2 tri. Nothing huge of course -- but they would have helped the bottom-line a little.

Otherwise, we had four winners on top in eleven races (Churchill, $4.40; Hollywood, 2.20, 5.60; Bay Meadows, 3.40). Also a modest mix of gimmicks, with the highlight being the boxed tri ($241.60/$2) in the Fran's Valentine at Hollywood.
