Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Obviously it was a very good afternoon. We cashed tickets on eight of the thirteen events -- with the highlight coming in the Rushaway at Turfway.

We had a respectable five winners on top (Aqueduct, $5.10; Gulfstream, $5.40, 5.60; Turfway, $3.00; Oaklawn, $9.00). That produced a small profit in that category.

However, the big action came in the gimmicks. A tri box in the Gotham ($287.50/$2) -- we also had the exacta box in that race though we didn't play it on the page ($93.50/$2). Cold exacta ($9.10/$2) and tri ($25.60/$2) in the Cicada. Cold exactas in both Gulfstream stakes ($9.60/$2, $22.60/$2). Boxed exacta and tri in the Queen (ex, $37.80/$2; tri $83.00/$2). In the Rebel a cold exacta ($30.60/$2) with our fourth pick completing the tri ($104.00/$2).

But the best ticket of the day came in the Rushaway at Turfway where one of our value picks underneath pulled off the upset at 38-1. Brass Hat, our fourth pick, was a maiden before Saturday's win, having started in a $15K maiden claimer two back and followed-up with a MSW try. Coming in just behind that one were our top choice, third pick, and second choice. We collected on the $328.00/$2 exacta and $1451.60/$2 triple. Though we didn't play it on the page, our four picks combined for the $2256.00/$2 super.

Overall an excellent way to kick off the Spring season!

WAGERED: $450.00
COLLECTED: $1416.65

Turf wagers are turf only

Aqueduct: Gotham G3 $200K

Saratoga County 9-2
Pomeroy 9-1
Eddington 6-5

Wager: $5 WP on Redskin Warrior.
Ran 5th at 5-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $143.75 on the tri box ($287.50/$2).

Redskin Warrior...Came back from layoff to win Best Turn decisively and trainer is low-percentage off the bench -- so this guy is a good one in the making for sure.
Saratoga County...Look at those comment lines and you know this hard-luck -- but talented -- colt can fire a big, big shot with a clean trip. Scratched from last week's Swale at Gulfstream for this.
Eddington...The "now" horse off his early season races in Florida. Could be this good but we'll see today in stakes debut.

Aqueduct: Cicada G3 $100K

Bohemian Lady 7-5
Whoopi Cat 1-1
Baldomera 8-1

Among My Souvenirs scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Bohemian Lady.
Collected $20.00 on the WP ($5.10, 2.90).
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$2 tri key Bohemian Lady over next three.
Collected $25.60 on the tri key ($25.60/$2).
...$1 tri key Among My Souvenirs over other three.

Bohemian Lady...Pletcher filly faltered as the fave last time in stakes debut for first career defeat. Let's look for a bounce back to winning form with that experience under her belt.
Among My Souvenirs...Beat top pick in that stake last time to stay undefeated. Clearly the one to beat.
Whoopi Cat...Looked like a top 2YO filly last summer at Saratoga. Not as impressive in two 3YO starts. Maybe return to east coast will help.

Gulfstream: Pan American H'cp G2 $200K

Quest Star 8-5
Request for Parole 7-5
Megantic 20-1

Wager: $5 WP on Quest Star.
Collected $20.00 on the WP ($5.40, 2.60).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $19.20 on the ex box ($9.60/$2).
...$2 tri key Quest Star over next three.
Ran 1/2-5-7.

Quest Star...Defending champ ran a 101 Beyer at 11F before winning this event last year. Ran 101 Beyer at 11F on 2/22. Looks capable again.
Request for Parole...Santos will have this one rolling in the lane.
Man From Wicklow...Might have needed first two off the long layoff.

Gulfstream: Caltech $60K

Shakespeare 9-5
Prince Arch 7-2
Prepster 14-1

Wager: $5 WP on Shakespeare.
Collected $23.50 on the WP ($5.60, 3.80).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $45.20 on the ex box ($22.60/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $11.30 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-6-10.

Shakespeare...Mott 3YO moves right into stake after debut win. Bred to be a good turfer.
Prince Arch...Seems to have taken a liking to this track.
Pa Pa Da...A couple of thirds this track and trip since coming south.
Tap Day.

Turfway: Queen $50K

Glorious Miss 7-1
Ebony Breeze 3-5
Air Marshall 7-2

Wager: $5 WP on Air Marshall.
Ran 3rd.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $18.90 on the ex box ($37.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $41.50 on the tri box ($83.00/$2).

Air Marshall...When McGaughey ships away from NY (or Florida in winter) his runners are usually well meant. Might be improved as a 4YO. Bailey rides.
Ebony Breeze...Solid stakes-level performer for Mott/Steinbrenner. Layoff is a concern.
Glorious Miss...Another that seems to be showing improvement this season.
Saratoga Humor.

Turfway: Rushaway $100K

Brass Hat 38-1
Tales of Glory 7-2
Gamblin 4-1

El Prado Rob/Pies Prospect entry ran 4-5 to complete the $2256.00/$2 super.

Collected $164.00 on the ex box ($328.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $725.80 on the tri box ($1451.60/$2).

Tales of Glory...Pletcher trainee makes 3YO debut. Solid start to career but faltered in rich Delta downs stake last fall. Expect better today.
Pies Prospect...Probably better than last two indicate. Might wake up with move away from Gulfstream. Also get El Prado Rob as part of entry.
Gamblin...SoCal shipper might add some value to gimmicks on the stretchout.
Brass Hat.

Turfway: Lane's End G2 $500K

Sinister G 16-1
Tricky Taboo 54-1

Ran 5-11.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-8-11.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-8-11.

Birdstone...Won the Champagne to cap 2YO season, then showed he's back, winning 3YO debut handily.
Silver Minister...Brings a three-race streak into this -- all stakes over this track.
Tricky Taboo...Last might signal he's getting the hang of the game.
Stolen Time.

Turfway: Bourbonette BC $150K

Class Above 1-2
Susan's Angel 15-1
Native Annie 6-1

Wager: $5 exacta box top two.

Slewpy's Storm.

Turfway: Hansel $50K

Marley's Revenge 5-1
Danieltown/entry 8-5
Wulpe 1-1

...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-5-6.

Mr Sam...Comes out of race where he beat six of these. Showed a liking for turf in that win.
Old Lee...Second to top pick last time. Why not a repeat?
Katzanova...Third in the same race.
Doc Malagar.

Oaklawn: Rebel $200K

Mr Jester...Yet to miss the exacta in seven lifetime starts.
Proper Prado/Pro Prado.
Gran Prospect.

Special Matter...Will be rolling late.
Continental Red.

Golden Gate: Danville H'cp $55K

More Crafty 21-1
Green Team 2-1

Collected $9.00 on the WP (xxx, $3.60).

...$1 tri box top three.
Ran 2-3-4.

Green Team...Second to the good Shake You Down two back. Followed-up with a good second right here.
