Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Three winners on top in eight events (Aqueduct, $5.30; Gulfstream, $5.20; Santa Anita, $4.00). Otherwise kind of a strange day wagering-wise. A cold exacta at Aqueduct to start the day. That was followed by a frustrating result in the Bonnie Miss at Gulfstream as our three picks completed a boxed tri -- but with the short field we'd taken a stand in that race by keying our top pick. So 'nada' for us there. Kind of a similar scenario at Fair Grounds -- although we did cash a boxed tri there that bailed us out. In the Sprint Championship at Gulfstream we ran 1-2-4 to miss a tri payoff -- and ended our day running 1-2-4 in the Big Cap at Santa Anita as well. And in the Big Cap we missed picking up some more dough because even though we had the cold exacta -- we scratched into it, leaving us out in the cold for the most part when it came time to collect.

Seems like we spent the afternoon 'just around the corner' from being profitable. Oh well, there's always next week...

WAGERED: $227.00
COLLECTED: $138.65

Turf wagers are turf only

Aqueduct: Stymie H'cp $75K

Ground Storm 8-5
Big Sid's Party 5-2
Nothing Flat 6-1

Loving scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Ground Storm.
Collected $20.75 on the WP ($5.30, 3.00).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $16.60 on the ex box ($16.60/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $8.30 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5.

Ground Storm...This one has vexed us in the past -- rarely putting in his "A" effort when we're onboard. But the Mott trainee has a solid 8-4-2-2 record over the inner and is coming out of a nice win at Gulfstream. Can improve on last year's third-place finish in this race.
Big Sid's Party...Goes out for meet-leader Dick Dutrow and has improved nicely in three inner oval tries this winter.
Lord Ofthe Thunder...State-bred stakes winner picks up the services of The Mig while coming out of a near-miss here last month.
Loving.

Gulfstream: Bonnie Miss G2 $200K

Last Song 3-1
Society Selection 1-2
Rare Gift 7-2

Wager: $5 exacta Society Selection over Last Song.
Ran 2/1.
...$2 exacta Society Selection over Rare Gift.
Ran 2/3.
...$5 tri key Society Selection over Last Song/Rare Gift.
Ran 2/1-3.

Society Selection...Only poor effort was in BC Juv Filly and she had some traffic problems that day. Near-miss in latest should have her ready today. Bailey stays onboard.
Last Song...Just behind top pick last time following a bang-up alw win two back. Tough.
Rare Gift.

Gulfstream: Richter Scale BC Sprint Champ G2 $200K

Lion Tamer 8-5
Coach Jimi Lee 9-2
Wacky For Love 58-1

Wager: $5 WP on Lion Tamer.
Collected $21.50 on the WP ($5.20, 3.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $14.70 on the ex box ($29.40/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Lion Tamer...Might be a star in the making -- and let's get onboard while there's still some modest value. Faltered along the Derby trail last year when stretched to two turns -- but won convincingly this track and trip in 2004 return.
Gygistar...A little unpredictable but clearly capable of being heard from on best... Go back to that 7F stake right here in April of 2002.
Valid Video...Third to Shake You Down last time. Place horse that day came back to run second in Golden Gate sprint stake.
Coach Jimi Lee.

Fair Grounds: FG Oaks G2 $300K

Ashado 1-1
Victory USA 3-1
Shadow Cast 5-1

Wager: $5 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$2 tri key Shadow Cast over next two.
Ran 3/1-2.
...$2 tri box top three.
Collected $35.80 on the tri box ($35.80/$2).

Shadow Cast...Farish/Howard filly looked like a contender in division winning stakes debut here last time.
Ashado...Two-turn question marks were answered by second in BC Juv Filly and win in Demoiselle. Off since November but Pletcher is OK in that department.
Victory USA.

Oaklawn: Honeybee $75K

Yoursmineours 6-1
Stephan's Angel 2-1
Solitary Emerald 8-1

Turn to Lass scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Stephan's Angel.
Collected $9.00 on the WP (xxx, 3.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-7.

Stephan's Angel...Started career with three convincing daylight wins. Faltered in Fair Grounds stake last time but some horses need to adjust to that surface. Let's forgive that effort and expect a rebound today.
Turn to Lass...Threw in one clunker -- but that was so out of character we'll consider it an aberration.
Miss Concerto...Looks like she might have improved as a 3YO.
All Electric.

Santa Anita: San Rafael G2 $200K

Imperialism 7-1
Lion Heart 1-1
Consecrate 44-1

Toasted scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Castledale.
Ran 6th at 11-1.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-5-6.

Castledale...Shopping for a mild upsetter... This one had a nice 2YO season in Ireland and then transferred his success here with a win in G2 Generous. Off since November and first try on dirt are concerns -- but he's working well for Mullins on the main track.
Lion Heart...Clearly the one to beat. Undefeated and at the top of some Derby lists. But his two stakes victories were in five-horse fields and he's been off a couple of months. If he has any chinks in the armor they might show up today.
Toasted...Euro-invader was pretty solid last year. Layoff and cold trainer are huge concerns -- but it's intriguing that Stevens elects to ride.
Hosco.

Santa Anita: Kilroe Mile H'cp G2 $350K

Sweet Return 9-1
Singletary 6-1
Inesperado 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Inesperado.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-10.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-8-10.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-8-10.

Inesperado...Frankel trainee has done well on the course and at the trip. Might have to juice up his Beyers a touch -- but cozy three-post might help cause.
Irish Warrior...Always in the hunt -- even when facing the best.
Singletary...Likes the track and the trip.
Needwood Blade.

Santa Anita: SA H'cp G1 $1 mil

Southern Image 1-1
Island Fashion 6-1
Saint Buddy 13-1

Pleasantly Perfect scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Pleasantly Perfect.
Scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $12.00 on the ex box ($24.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4.

Pleasantly Perfect...It wasn't that long ago he convincingly won the BC Classic on this strip and at this distance. G2 win on last day of January seems to indicate he's still in good form.
Southern Image...Tabbed him as a potential up-and-comer in the Sunshine Millions Classic. This is a little tougher than that restricted stake -- but he should give a good account of self.
Island Fashion...Filly has won at the distance and is going well enough now to believe she stands chance at hitting the board.
Olmodavor.
