Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Well, we wondered on Saturday if we could find any value in our plays -- and we advised watching the tote in those short fields. Lo and behold the gimmicks and prices materialized to give us another week in the black.

Still a little light on the win-end with only one winner on top in eight races (Gulfstream, $3.20). But we managed to cash a couple of nice exacta/tri plays at Gulfstream and Oaklawn and that was enough to propel us to a solid 47% ROI on the day.

WAGERED: $342.00
COLLECTED: $502.30.

Turf wagers are turf only

Aqueduct: Whirlaway $75K

Little Matth Man 9-1
Risky Trick 4-1
Quick Action 3-2

Wager: $5 WP on Quick Action.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-7.

Quick Action...Lukas/Overbrook 3YO Looked like a world-beater winning the Capossela by eight. Will be tough if able to negotiate two turns.
Jaglander...Another trying a route for the first time -- but Dutrow colt is perfect so far.
Risky Trick...Best race yet was lone two-turn try -- a nice second behind the promising Smarty Jones.
Sinister G.

Gulfstream: Davona Dale G2 $150K

Miss Coronado 8-1
Eye Dazzler 9-2
Society Selection 4-5

Last Song ran fourth to complete the $498.40/$2 super.

Wager: $5 WP on Last Song.
Ran 4th at 5-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $56.20 on the ex box ($112.40/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $133.90 on the tri box ($267.80/$2).

Last Song...Steady improvement capped by a big first-level alw win this track and trip last time. Looks ready for stakes debut.
Eye Dazzler...Graded stakes-placed in '03. Seven panel 2004 debut should have her fit for this.
Society Selection...Jerkens filly won Saratoga debut, followed that with a G1 stakes win. Then faltered in BC Juv Fillies after some traffic trouble. Picks up Bailey today and might be any kind -- but we need to see one off the layoff.
Miss Coronado.

Gulfstream: Donn H'cp G1 $500K

Medaglia d'Oro 3-5
Seattle Fitz 9-1
Funny Cide 3-1

Wager: $4 tri key Medaglia d'Oro over next three.
Ran 1/3-4-8.
...$1 tri key Puzzlement over other three.
Ran 4/1-3-8.

Medaglia d'Oro...Really the only knock is the layoff -- but is it really a knock? This guy has won convincingly after similar bench time in the past and that seems to be a specialty of Frankel's. 5-4-1-0 at the trip. Formidable.
Puzzlement...7-2-1-4 over the track including a nice win here on 1/3 in G2 Hal's Hope.
Funny Cide...This is the barometer race for '03 Derby winner. Need not win -- but needs to show more than he did in last year's BC Classic to indicate he's ready to take on the big guns.
Bowman's Band.

Gulfstream: Deputy Minister H'cp G3 $100K

Alke 4-1
Cajun Beat 4-5
Coach Jimi Lee 12-1

Wager: $5 WP on Cajun Beat.
Collected $6.50 on the WP (xxx, 2.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $13.10 on the ex box ($26.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Cajun Beat...BC Sprint winner indicated retention of good form with win here in G3 stake last time.
Gygistar...Brilliant when right but has a career marked with inconsistency. Should be heard from here if able to build on latest.
Alke...Last might indicate he's matured nicely as a 4YO.
True Direction.

Fair Grounds: Pan Zareta H'cp $60K

Handpainted 6-1
Tina Bull 4-5
Raymond's Dream 22-1

Wager: $5 WP on Put Me In.
Ran 4th at 5-2.
...$2 exacta box toptwo.
Ran 3-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-6.

Put Me In...Won impressively when introduced to the Fair Grounds dirt last time. A repeat effort takes this.
Raymond's Dream...Been racing mostly at Delta Downs over the past year -- but ventured out last winter and was competitive.
Tina Bull...Asmussen filly won at Saratoga and Churchill last year. Capable.
Distinctive Code.

Oaklawn: American Beauty $50K

Eternal Cup 6-1
Holiday Runner 10-1
Emily Ring 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Surf N Sand.
Ran a dead-heat 4th at 6-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $50.60 on the ex box ($101.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $242.00 on the tri box ($484.00/$2).

Surf N Sand...Put together a strong campaign for Bob Baffert last year. Now race for Donnie Van Hemel. Layoff is a concern but trainer is OK in that department.
Eternal Cup...Has had only one race since last summer but that one and a nice recent work should set her up for this.
Holiday Runner...Mid-Atlantic invader looks to fit nicely with these.
Emily Ring.

Santa Anita: San Vincente G2 $150K

Imperialism 14-1
Hosco 1-1
Consecrate 10-1

Wager: $2 tri box top three.
Ran 2-5-6.

Teton Forest...Baffert colt was impressive in debut and has been working well for this.
Number Juan...Showing improvement -- particularly since returning from layoff.
Hosco...3-3 record is hard to knock.

Santa Anita: Strub G2 $300K

Domestic Dispute 14-1
During 5-1
Buckland Manor 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Formal Attire.
Ran 5th at 25-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-8.

Formal Attire...Looks like there might be some pace in here to shoot at and this one has shown ability to stalk in the past.
Midas Eyes...Has yet to tackle two turns. Could be tough to run down though if allowed an easy lead.
During...Nice win pressing a fast pace last time. Similar scenario probable today -- with an added sixteenth in the mix.
Toccet.
