Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

We've been nibbling for a few weeks now and we finally put one together. The picks have been strong on the win-side for most of the fall season -- but we've only dabbled with the gimmicks. And the last couple of weeks we hit some gimmicks but weren't as strong on the win-side. Saturday we put it all together.

Only three for twelve with our top picks but it was enough to put us in the black in that category (Santa Anita, $13.20, $5.60, $7.80).

But it was those Cal Cup gimmicks that tipped the balance. Our plays pulled in four triples (Santa Anita, $194.60/$2, $622.00/$2, $327.20/$2, $176.40/$2) -- and of course exactas in each of those races as well. And although we don't play the superfectas our top four picks combined for two supers at Santa Anita ($935.60/$2, $446.80/$2).

All in all it was an excellent afternoon.

WAGERED $600.00
COLLECTED $967.40

Turf wagers are turf only

Belmont: Athenia H'cp G3 $100K

Caught in the Rain 14-1
Lojo 5-1

Ran 2-6.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-4-6.

Madeira Mist...Clement filly seldom gives a poor effort. Has done well over less than firm turf and likes the trip. Will be part of the action in the lane.
Lojo...Seems to be improving and a repeat of last effort will make her a player here.
Something Ventured...Pletcher filly is capable on best.
Coney Kitty.
Delta Princess.

Churchill: CD Distaff H'cp G2 $200K

Lead Story 35-1
Awesome Humor 7-2
Born to Dance 21-1

Wager: $5 WP on Yell.

Ran 2-6-8-9.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-6-8-9.

Yell...Started career with plenty of promise then faltered somewhat when thrown into G1 competition. Nice score last time at Keeneland might indicate a return to the prior good form.
Salzurita...Comes off of a couple of nice stakes wins at Mountaineer. Won nicely this track and trip last spring.
Awesome Humor...3YO has put together a nice season and is clearly capable of being in the hunt here.
Mayo On The Side.
Meteor Miracle.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Starter H'cp $50K

Fade to Blue 3-1
Mr Steve 11-1
Unamedthegame 26-1

Ran 1-4-5-8.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-4-5-8.

First Insight...The distance is the big question mark for these. This guy ran a decent race at ten furlongs last time and might be able to lull them to sleep on the front end today.
Fade to Blue...Ran second in this race last year.
Anziyan Royalty...Lightly raced -- therefore has the right to jump up and surprise these.
Passionforcashin.
Mr Steve.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Starter Sprint H'cp $50K

Coconut Mango 5-1
Raise Expectations 3-1
Love That Lion 3-1

Forward March...Likes the track and the trip. Has a little bit of a layoff to deal with but looks tough if ready.
Love That Lion... This one has been on a roll since summer. Trainer's a little cold at the meet however.
Raise Expectation...Should appreciate the return to state-bred company.
Coconut Mango.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Distance H'cp $100K

Moscow Burning 6-1
Ardum Relaunch 17-1
Valentine Dancer 7-5

Wager: $5 WP on Shalini.

Collected $90.60 on the ex box ($181.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $311.00 on the tri box ($622.00/$2).

Shalini...Nosed out of a win in this event last year. Would prefer to see a prep for this but we'll hope she's ready off the layoff.
Valentine Dancer...The trip is a concern but is coming off of a nice open stakes win last time.
Moscow Burning...Another that is facing the ten panels for the first time but has shown a clear affinity for the turf so far.
Ardum Relaunch.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Matron H'cp $150K

Royally Chosen 9-5
Summer Wind Dancer 3-1

...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-4-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-5-7.

Cee's Elegance...Yet another coming into today off a layoff -- but trainer is Ok in that department. This one won a G2 stakes two back and is the one to beat on best effort.
Royally Chosen ...Over-matched in latest. Should improve against state-breds.
Super High...Wired this race last year and might be ready to return to that form.
Thermal Ablasion.

Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-6-11-12.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-6-11-12.

Roberta's Mango...Might have needed last. Expect a better effort second time back from layoff.
Blind Ambition...7-3-4-0 lifetime. Not sure from the record however if sprinting's her game.
Princess V...Looked very promising early then faltered last time at Del Mar. Expect a return to that good form.
Grant Marty a Wish.

Collected $163.60 on the tri box ($327.20/$2).

Green Team...Seems to have stepped it up since the claim.
Trapper...Can't fault the 8-5-2-0 record. We'll have to see how he fares in SoCal though.
Highly Tempting...Another that has moved forward since the claim. In barn of current hot trainer.
Summer Service.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Juv Fillies $125K

House of Fortune 9-5

...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $8.70 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7-8.

House of Fortune...Last couple of wins were convincing enough to believe she'll still be standing around two-turns.
Silent Sighs...They always have license to improve in their second start and if this one does she'll be very tough.
Daddy's Princess...Return to state-breds should help.
Nicole and Ben.

Ran 2-3-4-5.

Good Meeting...Goes dirt to turf and trainer is excellent with that move.
Continental Red...Seems to prefer more distance but might have a slight class edge here.
Sea to See...This one usually goes well and is running for red-hot trainer.
Menacing Dennis.

Ran 2-4-6-9.

Grey Memo...Comes out of a couple of OK efforts in G2's. Should be ready for these in third start off of layoff.
Hot Market...Will try to take them all the way -- but should have some company on the front end and has been off a long time.
Kedington...Gets tested a little bit here but looks capable on best.
Red Warrior.

He's the Rage...Just missed after big closing move in debut. If able to show some improvement this time he could be tough.

Black Horse Money...Makes first start for red-hot trainer.
P Town John.
