Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Ah well, Breeders' Cup is never our strong suit. And we join a majority of handicappers in having put together a lackluster field of selections. "Event" days are always tough in that they offer too many unknowns in relation to the knowns we need and use everyday to handicap. It's a fun day and all you need is one or two nice scores to make it profitable -- but it's certainly not a day that anyone can conquer consistently.

Only one winner in fourteen tries (Santa Anita, $7.80). We hit a couple of decent exactas on the Breeders' Cup card -- but they weren't nearly enough to put us in a good wagering position.

As always, a fun afternoon, but a little more like playing the lottery than picking horses...

Randaroo 9-2
Shine Again 1-2

Ran 2/1-4-6.

...$1 tri key Shine Again over next three, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2/1-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Shine Again...Jerkens trainee has been a hard-knocker all year -- not missing an exacta finish in six starts which includes five graded stakes.
Randaroo...Seems like this filly is improving. won a G3 last out and looks ready for this assignment.
Follow Me Home...Little bit of a question mark as to how the pace will shake out here and this one might shake loose early. If so she can easily hang on for a piece.
Drexel Monorail.
Message Red.

Belmont: Sport Page H'cp G3 $100K

Voodoo 4-1
Bowman's Band 6-5
Highway Prospector 10-1

Aggadan scratched.

...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-8.

Outstander...Speedy win in minor Meadowlands stake last time signals this one could be heard from here in third start off of long layoff.
Bowman's Band...Won a G2 at Meadowlands last time and is a proven stakes performer. Might not have edge though cutting back to sprint.
Aggadan...Clearly loves the track. Ran second behind the promising Ghostzapper in a G1 last time.
Highway Prospector.

Keeneland: Fayette G3 $150K

MB Sea 34-1
Tenpins 1-1
DH - Changeintheweather 16-1
DH - Seattle Fitz 5-2

Wager: $5 WP on Tenpins.

Ran 2-3-6-7.
...$1 tri key Tenpins over next three.
Ran 2/3-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-6-7.

Tenpins...Looks to be the class of the field. Won this event last year. Two wins and a second in a limited campaign this season -- the second was last time behind the very good Perfect Drift.
Quest...Trainer's having a big meet and this guy is always in the hunt -- including last time against Mineshaft.
Changintheweather...Has put together a solid stakes season.
Country Be Gold.

Delaware: Cordially $55K

Shiny Sheet 4-5
Smooth Maneuvers 2-1
Blue Hills 10-1

Drexel Monorail, Special Trial scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Smooth Maneuvers.
Collected $8.00 on the WP (xxx, 3.20).

...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $3.90 on the ex box ($7.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
No tri offered after scratches.

Smooth Maneuvers...Has done nothing wrong in three tries. Stretches out today but looks capable.
Special Treat...Like the top pick this one is a sprinter stretching to a two-turn mile but this pair might control the race on the front-end.
Drexel Monorail...And here's a sprinter that made a successful stretchout last time, winning a minor Meadowlands stake.
Shiny Sheet.

Santa Anita: Very Subtle H'cp $100K

Stellar 9-1
Lacie Girl 3-1
Cee's Valley Girl 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Cee's Valley Girl.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-6.

Cee's Valley Girl...Was on a pretty good roll of nice performances prior to turfing last time. Let's excuse that experiment and expect a return to good form.
Lacie Girl...Hollendorfer/Baze filly has been tearing it up in NoCal. Last visit to this track was disappointing but expect better today.
Nasty Storm...First-time-Frankel. Has been off a long time but trainer is OK in that area.
Spring Meadow.

Santa Anita: Breeders' Cup Distaff G1 $2 mil

Adoration 40-1
Elloluv 8-1
Got Koko 4-1

Wager: $5 exacta Sightseek over Got Koko.
Ran 4-3.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$2 tri key Sightseek over next three.
Ran 4/3-6-7.

Sightseek...Has been so solid since springtime that this one looks like the lock of the day.
Got Koko...Likes the track and got a nice prep last time winning a G2 here. Will be rolling late.
Take Charge Lady...Seldom runs worse than second and is certainly capable of coming up big here.
Lady Tak.

Santa Anita: BC Juv Fillies G1 $1 mil

Halfbridled 2-1
Ashado 13-1
Victory USA 7-1

Wager: $5 WP on Class Above.
Ran 7th at 4-1.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Ran 7-10.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-7-10.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-7-10.

Class Above...Won the $100K Turfway stake last time like a champ -- we'll see today. Very fast work on Monday is a concern.
Society Selection...Jerkens filly jumped up from a nice debut win at Saratoga in a MSW right into the G1 Frizette which she won convincingly. Deserves to be here and has a big shot. Inexperienced jock is a concern.
Halfbridled... Likely fave would probably rate higher but the extreme outside post has to be considered a negative.

Santa Anita: BC Mile G1 $1.5 mil

Six Perfections 5-1
Touch of the Blues 11-1
Century City 39-1

Wager: $5 WP on Designed For Luck.
Ran 7th at 5-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $76.80 on the ex box ($153.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7-8.

Designed For Luck...Done well at the track and the trip. Won a very fast G2 here last time. A repeat should make him tough.
Touch of the Blues...Seems in best form of career at the moment.
Six Perfections...Never worse than second in nine tries in France. Beat the boys in a G1 last time. Layoff and firm turf are a concern though.
Special Ring.

Santa Anita: BC Sprint G1 $1 mil

Cajun Beat 22-1
Bluesthestandard 13-1
Shake You Down 7-2

Wager: $5 WP on Aldebaran.
Ran 6th at 2-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-4-6-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-6-9.

Aldebaran...Really an improved performer this season. Moved to the lead early in the lane in 7F King's Bishop which should allay fears about the distance.
Shake You Down...Until we see otherwise we just have to look at the Saratoga disappointment as an aberration. Throw that race out and the recent record is outstanding.
Private Horde...Kind of expecting some value here as this one seems to be getting overlooked. Has done little wrong this year and if able to recapture that Saratoga form he might surprise them all.

Santa Anita: BC Filly & Mare Turf G1 $1 mil

Islington 5-2
L'Ancresse 46-1
Yesterday 14-1

Wager: $5 WP on Islington.
Collected $34.50 on the WP (7.80, 6.00).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-4-7-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-7-8.

Islington...What more can you say other than to look at last where she was photo'd in a G1 by High Chaparral and Falbrav. Probably should have won this event last year but had traffic problems.
Tates Creek...Frankel filly has really done little wrong in the past two seasons.
Voodoo Dancer...Another proven performer that might come in under the radar screen this afternoon.
Heat Haze.

Santa Anita: BC Juv G1 $1.5 mil

Action This Day 26-1
Minister Eric 8-1
Chapel Royal 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Race for Glory.
Ran 9th at 6-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 9-12.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-4-9-12.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-9-12.

Race for Glory...Won MSW in debut. Then faltered when moved into a stake. Improved on that experience however and won by daylight in a minor stake over this track last time. You can do a lot worse than to hang your hat on a DW Lukas 2YO in a big race.
Cuvee...Probable fave has been spectacular when winning. Lone blemish followed a problemed trip. Might be hindered today be the outside post.
Chapel Royal...We might get a line today on two that didn't show up -- this one finished behind Birdstone and Silver Wagon in last two.
Tiger Hunt.

Santa Anita: BC Turf G1 $2 mil

DH - High Chaparral 9-2
DH - Johar 14-1
Falbrav 7-2

Wager: $5 WP on Falbrav.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-7.
...$1 tri key Falbrav over next three.
Ran 3/1-5-7.

...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-7.

Falbrav...Arguably Europe's best. If he takes to the climate and the course he'll be tough.
High Chaparral...Beat the top pick two back then followed with a decent third in the Arc. Won this race last year. No slouch.
Storming Home...Would be undefeated in four US starts but for freakish Arlington Million mishap. Blazed home last time to win G1 this track and trip.

Santa Anita: BC Classic G1 $4 mil

Pleasantly Perfect 14-1
Medaglia D'Oro 5-2
Dynever 15-1

Wager: $5 WP on Perfect Drift.
Ran 6th at 5-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 6-10.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $70.00 on the ex box ($140.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-6-10.

Perfect Drift...Except for the Arlington Million turf experiment hasn't done anything wrong since spring -- beating the likes of Mineshaft and Congaree.
Volponi...Don't expect odds as high as last year but there should still be some value due to the oh-fer this season -- but there should be enough pace to insure this guy has a chance in the lane.
Medaglia D'Oro...A deserving fave -- but he's suspect at the distance. Likes the front-end but should have some quality company there today.
Pleasantly Perfect.

Santa Anita: Seabiscuit H'cp $150K

Pie N Burger 7-1
Chinkapin 10-1
Redattore 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Fleetstreet Dancer.
Ran 6th at 5-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-6-7.

Fleetstreet Dancer...Has been competitive in G1's and G2's and might have a slight class edge here.
Chinkapin...Gets tested here but has been going well since early summer.
Redattore...Probably prefers the turf but is a graded winner on dirt and, like top pick, looks to have some class on this bunch.
Nose The Trade.
