Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Like last week we were perhaps a few inches from moving our bankroll into positive territory. Turf plays are usually our strong point but we took a hit at Belmont on the grass this week. That was perhaps due to the off-going at Belmont which resulted in some surprising results in the Ticonderoga and Mohawk. On the other hand, our top two ran 1st and 3rd at Keeneland and we hit the exacta cold at Calder -- both on turf. Where we did score: Three winners on top in eleven events -- one race was washed off the turf -- (Belmont, $24.80; Calder, $4.40; Meadowlands, $4.80). So we had a positive ROI of about 54% in that category.

Our best gimmick return on the day came in the Iroquois at Belmont where we collected with an exacta box ($68.00/$2) and tri box ($296.00/$2). We also managed a couple of cold exactas on the day (Calder, $32.80/$2; Meadowlands, $15.20/$2). There were a couple more minor gimmicks in our mix.

The disappointment on the day, and the race that could have turned it all around, was the Hudson at Belmont. We correctly tabbed the 11-1 winner. Behind him in a photo for the place and show spots were our second and third choices. Unfortunately the three-way photo went to a horse we left out of our mix -- leaving us without the juicy exacta and tri.

Ran 4/1-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-6-7.

Front Line...Gets the nod here on connections. Werner is an up-and-comer who does well with 2YOs. This one has done well in two tries in KY and should go well against NY-breds.
Capeside Lady...Two big wins against state-breds, including a stake last time.
Stand On Top...Over-matched against G1 competition last time but was on OK third in a G3 prior to that.
Hollywood wonder.

Belmont: Sleepy Hollow $100K

Friends Lake 3-1
Pa Pa Da 5-2
Rb's Glitter 46-1

Gratz Park scratched.

Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-10.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-10.

Gratz Park...These youngsters are always eligible to move forward nicely in their second starts -- and Pletcher's often do so.
Flagshipenterprise...Comes out of a nice win in a NY-bred stake. Moves into barn of promising trainer.
Pa Pa Da...Has made a couple of nice starts so far and makes a turf to dirt move today.
Bond Arbitrage.

Belmont: Iroquois H'cp $125K

Princess Dixie 4-1
She's Got The Beat 5-1
Grab Bag 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Grab Bag.

...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $34.00 on the ex box ($68.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $148.00 on the tri box ($296.00/$2).

Grab Bag...Gets tepid vote in a very competitive heat. Making third start of 2003 and looks potentially set up to fire a good one.
Travelator...Has swapped top two finishes with top pick in last two starts. Has yet to miss board in nine tries.
She's Got The Beat...Faced some top competition over the summer and acquitted herself well -- but those were short fields. She might have a little trouble against this bunch -- especially from the outside post.
Princess Dixie.

Belmont: Ticonderoga H'cp $150K

Lady Bi Bi 12-1
Brandala 27-1
Beebe Lake 24-1

Wager: $5 WP on Exchange Bay.

...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 5-11.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 4-5-7-11.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 4-5-7-11.

Exchange Bay...Turf seems to be his preferred surface and she's really come to hand this summer. Should go well with Bailey onboard.
Dynamic Lisa...Expect some improvement over latest with return to state-breds competition.
Perfect Energy...Seems best suited to front-running style and outside post might hinder that strategy today.
Alleged Whisper.

Belmont: Hudson H'cp $125K

One N Three 11-1
Impeachthepro 17-1
No Parole 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on One N Three.

Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.

One N Three...Always in the hunt. Makes third start of season. Looks to have some speed to shoot at.
No Parole...Graded stakes performer has been disappointing this year -- but might be ready to rebound against NY-breds.
Bossanova...Eye-popping Beyers are hard to ignore -- but has been off since June and is likely to find some company on the front-end.
Top Shoter.

Belmont: Mohawk H'cp $150K

Quiet Ruler 20-1
Salute Him 33-1
Haggs Castle 9-1

Statement scratched.

Ran 4-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 4-8-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 4-8-9.

Quantum Merit...Has really rounded to form nicely as summer has moved into fall. That includes a similar stake win last time.
Foreverness...Certainly likes the course. Will probably need to bump up the Beyers a little but looks capable of that kind of improvement.
Statement...Inconsistent sort is clearly capable on best -- but it's a coin-flip whether we'll see that today.
Irish Colonial.

Belmont: Empire Classic H'cp $250K

Well Fancied 7-5
Gander 4-1
Mr Determined 68-1

Wager: $5 WP on Traffic Chief.

Collected $7.70 on the ex box ($15.40/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-6-7.

Traffic Chief...3YO is undefeated against state-breds. Only blemish is a god third in G3 company. Beat older earlier this season -- on this track. Been off since Saratoga but the trainer is OK off the layoff. Tested today but looks this good.
Well Fancied...Has yet to go this trip but won at just a bit shorter in June. Beyers and form make this the horse to beat.
Gander...Seemed to wake up last time out and is the defending champ in this race.
Acceptable Venture.

Calder: Flying Pidgeon H'cp $100K

French Charmer 6-5
Lost Appeal 8-1

French Charmer...12-7-2-0 on turf, includes bringing a three-race streak into this. Off since early August which is a concern but looks best if ready.
Lost Appeal...Has done well on the track thus far. Should go well again.
Mr Livingston...Typically is in the hunt when on turf at Calder.
Cellars Merlot.

Ran 1-3-5-7.
...$1 tri box top three.
Ran 1-3-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-7.

Derrianne...Looked solid winning US debut and only needs a repeat of that effort to score here.
Dyna Da Wyna...Seems to have improved nicely in late summer. Comes in off of two wins including a stake.
Shaconage...Another on the improve. Closed for a big stakes win last time in Canada.
Feisty Bull.

...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$2 tri key Cooperation over next three.
Ran 4/1-2-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-8.

Cooperation...Baffert youngster showed some promise early on at Del Mar then faltered in graded company. Should go well with return to sprint and this level of competition.
Voladero...Lukas/Lewis 2YO did OK in stakes in Chicago.
The Herc...Woke up last time but that was against mdn clm'rs.
Razen Hazen.

Whoop's A Daisy...Seems to have gotten back on track after a dull summer.
Niblick.

Meadowlands: Princeton $40K

Angelic Aura 1-1
Poppy's Image 9-2
