Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

With twelve races on our plate we were looking to hit at least a couple of the tri's to move us into positive territory... Saturday was frustrating in that regard.

We did manage to grab the nightcap tri at the Meadowlands -- but it lacked value. What hurt was our three near misses where we ran 1-2-4 to just miss the tri. At Belmont and in the Calder Derby if ours can get up from fourth to third, the gimmick wouldn't have been huge, but it certainly would have helped the bottom line. The race that really caused a sting was the QEII at Keeneland. We had an 11-1 over a 4-1 for a nice backup exacta of $168.80/$2. Our fourth-place finsher was less than a length back at 9-1. The tri paid over $1600/$2 and ours would have been more.... Doh! That close to a nice afternoon.

Otherwise, four winners on top in twelve races, all pretty chalky (Belmont, $3.10; Calder, 3.00, 4.00, 2.40). The top pick ran second in four other races, including a controversial no-DQ in the QEII at Keeneland. We had one cold exacta (Calder, $14.80/$2) and a mix of some other backup exactas throughout the card.

WAGERED: $528.00
COLLECTED: $319.10

Turf wagers are turf only

Belmont: Lawrence Realization H'cp G3 $150K

Kicken Kris 1-2
Rowans Park 10-1
Fortune Writers 17-1

Wager: $5 WP on Kicken Kris.
Collected $13.75 on the WP (3.10, 2.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$2 exacta Kicken Kris over next four.
Collected $18.80 on the ex key ($18.80/$2).
...$1 ex box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $9.40 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Kicken Kris...First or second in all six tries since moving to grass. G1 winner. Good tries at 10F seem to indicate he should handle the distance.
Devils Peak..."Hidden" half of Clement "entry" might be ready for this assignment. Has been improving over the summer and might add some value here. Low percentage jock is a big concern.
Go Deputy...Lightly raced and improving from Pletcher. Would rate higher if regular jock were aboard.
Rowans Park.
Saint Stephen.

Keeneland: QEII Cup G1 $500K

Film Maker 11-1
Maiden Tower 4-1
Casual Look 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Maiden Tower.
Collected $16.50 on the WP (xxx, 6.60).
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 ex box top four.
Collected $84.40 on the ex box ($168.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-10.

Maiden Tower...These Euros have a tendency to come over and dominate the hometown turfers -- and this filly is a solid 7-5-2-0, including a G2 win last time.
Ocean Drive...Only non-exacta finish in seven tries was a ship-out west last year as a 2YO -- otherwise career has been bang-up.
Indy Five Hundred...Win in a G1 at Belmont last time was eye-popping. We get a better idea today whether that was a sign of improvement or a fluke.
Film Maker.

Calder: Cassidy $75K

Zak's Precocious 9-2
Alarkandadove 11-1
Horah for Bailey 9-2

Family Favorite scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Usual Manner.
Ran 7th at 5-2.
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 5-7.
...$1 ex box top four.
Ran 1-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-7.

Usual Manner...A mdn clm and alw win bookend two decent, but losing efforts as favorites in stakes. Win last time was good-looking and came after a two-month break. We believe she's primed for a stakes win.
Our Exploit...Followed the top pick around the track in second most of the way last time. Should go well in only her third start.
Zak's Precious...Nice win last time in second start. Solid jock switch.
Family Favorite.

Calder: Birdonthewwire $75K

Wynn Dot Comma 1-2
Twice as Bad 12-1
Super Cherokee 15-1

Wager: $5 WP on Wynn Dot Comma.
Collected $14.50 on the WP (3.00, 2.80).
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$1 ex box top four.
Ran 1-5-7-10.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-7-10.

Wynn Dot Comma...Outside post is no bonus but this guy is 3-3 so far, looks to be improving and picks up services of Mr Bailey today.
Sir Louie...Good win last time in MSW. Had a 7-pound bug that day, gets a solid journeyman today.
Precocious Builder...Had a troubled start and still managed to get up for second in latest.
Misguided Left.

Calder: Shocker T H'cp $100K

Splasha 10-1
Sara's Success 9-1
Scapade 7-1

Wager: $5 WP on Saintly Action.
Ran 8th at 4-5.
...$4 ex box top two.
Ran 8-11 (lost rider at break).
...$1 ex box top four.
Ran 3-4-8-11.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-8-11.

Saintly Action...Lightly raced 4YO from Mott/Bailey seems to be getting the hang of it going by her last two.
Scottish Bubbly...Was really going quite well through late spring, then faltered mid-summer. We'll hop back onboard hoping that win in latest is a signal of return to good form.
Win's Fair Lady...Disappointed in graded company last couple -- but back at a track she likes and a level she should compete at.

Calder: Spend A Buck H'cp G3 $100K

Tour of the Cat 9-5
Best of the Rest 4-5
Dancing Guy 11-1

Wager: $5 WP on Best of the Rest.

...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 2-7.
...$1 ex box top four.
Ran 2-4-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-6-7.

Best of the Rest...Millionaire has won over half of his starts. Layoff is the biggest question mark here but came off the bench last year to run second in this event. Tough if ready -- but again, that's something we won't know until the race is over.
Longford Arms...Looked to be rounding into nice form early this summer. Took a brief rest and was a little dull last time. Can add some value if sharper today.
R Associate...Worth including on the angle -- third start of layoff, stretching out after two sprints.
Patriotic Flame.

Calder: Oaks $200K

Love Sting 18-1
Miss Tassy 12-1
Formal Miss 1-1

Wager: $5 WP on Formal Miss.

...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-8.

Formal Miss...Horse for the course angle at work here.
Dakota Light...Finished second to top pick in latest.
Petionville Indeed...Over-matched in G1 last time. Should return to competitiveness here.
Love Sting.

Calder: Florida Stallion/My Dear Girl $400K

...$1 ex box top four.
Collected $12.00 on the ex box ($24.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7-9.

Chatter Chatter...Woke up to take a MSW by 23 lengths last time. Tough if able to come close to a repeat. Bailey rides.
French Village...Undefeated in three starts, including a couple of prep stakes for this.
Ride Her Out...Won a $100K stake here last time only to be DQ'd.
Royal Lace.

Calder: Florida Stallion/In Reality $400K

...$1 ex box top four.
Collected $11.00 on the Ex box ($22.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-6-8.

All True...Finally got a trouble-free trip and improved nicely to finish second behind Sir Oscar last time. Bailey rides today.
Sir Oscar...4-4 and clearly the one to beat. Outside post might be a little bit of a handicap.
Kipper's Night...Has yet to miss the board. Behind top two last time.
Tap Dancer.

Calder: Derby G3 $200K

Stroll 1-5
Certifiably Crazy 17-1

Stroll...Mott/Bailey turfer has improved nicely over the summer. Won a G2 at Belmont last time.
Certifiably Crazy...Undefeated in two grass starts.
R Associate...Tries turf route off of two dirt sprints. Might offer some value.
Boston Fox.

Collected $14.40 on the ex box ($28.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.

Buffythecenterfold...Graded stakes performer was OK in turf debut. Might be even better today at a sprinting distance.
Roberta's Mango...A very solid turf sprinter.
Belleski...Likes the track and the trip.
Cee's Valley Girl.

Meadowlands: Long Look $50K

Drexel Monorail 5-1

...$1 tri Pocus Hocus over next three.
Ran 2/1-3-4.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $31.70 on the tri box ($63.40/$2).

Pocus Hocus...Pace is the name of the game here and it looks like this gal might be able to take this short field gate-to-wire.
Arabis...If there is a challenge on the front end this one should benefit in the lane.
Artist Johanna...Capable of bettering this rating making third start off layoff.
Drexel Monorail.
