Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

The handicapping was actually pretty solid this week -- but we paddled upstream fighting to find value all the way. A couple of modest breaks could have improved things greatly.

Four winners on top in eleven races (Belmont, $2.60; Calder, $8.20; Keeneland, $7.80; Meadowlands, $2.80). After the first ten races on our dance card a win wager on each of our top picks had returned a total of $18.60. To reach a positive win-bet ROI on the afternoon we needed our pick in the nightcap stake at the Meadowlands to pay about four bucks. Not too much to ask for. However, the pick, Cupid Season, looked to be the favorite in a short field so we were keeping our fingers crossed. Well, Cupid Season won -- but after scratches only five horse ran, four betting interest. So Cupid paid a meager $2.80 to win leaving us with a total return on eleven $2 win-bets at $21.40 -- just missing a positive ROI.

Our win total also took a jolt at Santa Anita... Sweet Return came up a head short in a photo finish at 5-2 in the Oak Tree Derby, and Fleetstreet Dancer was just a half length away from the win at 6-1 in the Goodwood. If either of those get the job done it would have improved the bottom line.

On the plus side -- we tabbed two tri's cold (although the Meadowlands tri was canceled after scratches). And we just missed grabbing two more tri's cold as our second pick bested our top choice with our third pick running third. So that makes four races in eleven where our top two completed the exacta and our top three accounted for tri's. The only problem was -- lack of value. Sometimes that's the way it goes...

WAGERED: $373.00
COLLECTED: $259.50

Turf wagers are turf only

Belmont: Frizette G1 $500K

Society Selection 8-1
Victory USA 5-2
Ashado 5-2

Wager: $5 WP on Ashado.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$2 tri key Ashado over next two.
Ran 3/2-4.

Ashado...Pletcher filly proved in last that she's OK on a dry track too. Best until beaten.
Daydreaming...Favored over top pick in Spinaway after dazzling debut. Ok third in the stake despite troubled start -- can improve.
Victory USA...Ran into the very good Halfbridled last time. Should go well in third start.
Marylebone.

Belmont: Champagne G1$500K

Birdstone 2-1
Chapel Royal 3-2
Dashboard Drummer 15-1

Wager: $5 W on Chapel Royal.
Ran 2nd.
...$3 exacta box top two.
Collected $25.20 on the ex box ($16.80/$2).
...$2 tri key Chapel Royal over next three.
Ran 2/1-3-6.

Chapel Royal...Unbeaten streak was halted in the G1 Hopeful. Winner of that race could turn out to be a good one so this guy wasn't disgraced with a decent second. Right back to top spot today.
Birdstone...Highly regarded going into Hopeful in second start after a 12-length MSW win. Trouble in the stake and should improve off of that effort.
Dashboard Drummer...From 2-furlong maiden winner at Prairie Meadows to G3 winner in three easy starts. Really tested for class today.
Read the Footnotes.

Belmont: Kelso BC H'cp G2 $350K

Freefourinternet 20-1
Proud Man 5-1
Rouvres 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Rouvres.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-5.

Rouvres...Clement turfer has seemed on the verge of becoming a good one since arriving stateside. Has yet to get over the hump but today might be the day.
Proud Man...Put together two strong wins coming into this. Brief layoff is a concern but trainer has solid stats in that area.
Millenium Dragon...Likes the track and last should set him up well for this.
Decarchy.

Belmont: Beldame G1 $750K

Sightseek 1-5
Bird Town 11-1
Buy the Sport 7-1

Wager: $5 W on Sightseek.
Collected $6.50 on the W (2.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $11.20 on the ex box ($11.20/$2).
...$2 tri key Sightseek over next three.
Collected $37.60 on the tri key ($37.60/$2).

Sightseek...11-7-4-0 lifetime. We've seen some Frankel trainees come up a little short a few times since mid-August -- but this gal looks solid unless there's a total meltdown.
Bird Town...Perhaps it was the distance. Or maybe the Test took something out of her. Alabama run was too dull to believe. She's got a G1 win over this track so perhaps she'll rebound.
Buy the Sport...Scored this track and trip at 48-1 in US debut. We'll see today whether or not that was a fluke.
Smok'n Frolic.

Calder: U Can Do It H'cp $75K

Chispiski 3-1
Barbara O'Brien 9-2
Sea Span 18-1

Wager: $5 WP on Chispiski.
Collected $32.50 on the WP (8.20, 4.80).
...$5 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $28.20 on the ex box ($56.40/$2).
...$1 tri key Chispiski over next three.
Ran 1/2-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5-6.

Chispiski...Seems to be rounding back to good form after vacationing for first half of year. Won this race in 2002.
Vision in Flight...Has yet to miss an exacta finish in eight tries over the course.
Honeymooner...Beat top pick in latest.
Barbara O'Brien.

Keeneland: Lane's End Breeders' Futurity G2 $400K

Eurosilver 11-1
Tiger Hunt 12-1
Limehouse 13-1

Wager: $5 WP on Value Plus.
Ran 4th at 2-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-10.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-4-6-10.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-6-10.

Value Plus...Second to the very good Cuvee last time despite trouble. That experience should help move him forward today.
Mass Media...Sprinting alw at La Downs is different from two-turn G2 at Keeneland -- but that 22-length score last time is just too good to ignore.
Eurosilver...Zito youngster showed solid improvement last time.
The Cliff's Edge.

Keeneland: Sycamore BC G3 $150K

Sharbayan 5-2
Cetewayo 12-1
Deputy Strike 2-1

Wager: $5 WP on Sharbayan.
Collected $31.00 on the WP (7.80, 4.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-7-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-7-8.

Sharbayan...Improving sort is 2-2 over the course.
Rochester...Comes into this off of a win in the Ky Cup Turf -- albeit by DQ -- and used the same tactic to get to a win here last year. Doesn't look to be coming in quite as tight this time though.
Revved Up...3-1-2-0 this season -- so, going well and liable to improve.
Blazing Fury.

Keeneland: Shadwell Turf Mile G1 $600K

Perfect Soul 6-1
Honor in War 9-1
Touch of the Blues 4-1

Wager: $5 WP on Trademark.
Ran 6th at 5-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 5-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-6.

Trademark...Just missed in US debut then reeled off two solid graded stakes wins. Can add another today with repeat effort.
Inesperado...Frankel turfer came back from 7-month layoff to just miss in Del Mar stake with high Beyer fig. Off another two months since but should go well if ready.
Perfect Soul...Only off-the-board finish this year was a fifth in the Arlington Million -- by less than a length!
Touch of the Blues.

Santa Anita: Oak Tree Derby G2 $150K

Devious Boy 1-1
Sweet Return 5-2
Urban King 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Sweet Return.
Collected $7.50 on the WP (xxx, 3.00).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $18.00 on the ex box ($9.00/$2).
...$2 tri box top three.
Collected $17.80 on the tri box ($17.80/$2).

Sweet Return...Let's see if Stevens learned a little something when partnered with this one last time and perhaps he can move him forward enough to win.
Devious Boy...A nose in front of top pick last time. Has gone well in three US tries -- but all were at Del Mar so we need to see him duplicate that form elsewhere.
Urban King...Frankel trainee has been competitive since arriving stateside -- but as yet to win.
Californian.

Santa Anita: Goodwood BC H'cp G2 $500K

Pleasantly Perfect 7-5
Fleetstreet Dancer 6-1
Star Cross 29-1

Wager: $5 WP on Fleetstreet Dancer.
Collected $12.50 on the WP (xxx, 5.00).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $12.00 on the ex box ($24.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Fleetstreet Dancer...Tough to take one shooting an oh-fer-2003 but has been facing nice graded company almost all year and holding his own. Could find this group to his liking.
Joey Franco...Sprinter stretched out successfully to take 8-furlong stake last time. Could go well again if pace scenario suits.
Pleasantly Perfect...Won this race last year and would be top pick if not for the layoff. Trainer is just OK in that department -- however, works are solid.
Reba's Gold.

Meadowlands: Just Smashing $45K

Cupid Season/entry 2-5
Stacy's Squaw/entry 2-5
City Sister 2-1
Border Bound 9-1

Impolite scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Cupid Season.
Collected $7.00 on the W (2.80 -- no place or show after scratches).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $10.00 on the ex box ($5.00/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $2.50 on the ex box.
...$4 tri key Cupid Season over next three.
No tri after offered after scratches.
...$1 tri box top four.
No tri offered.

Cupid Season...An astute $35K claim in February. Comes into this having won four of last five. This minor stakes should be right up her alley.
City Sister...NY-invader should also find this company to her liking.
Impolite...Sprinting might just be her game as turf win two back seems to indicate.
Border Bound.
