Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Another good week on the top-end of the equation with six winners on top in eleven races (Bel, $3.50, $2.80; Pimlico, $5.20; Calder, $8.80; Arlington, $2.40; Fairplex, $2.60). Clearly there was plenty of chalk in the mix but we still managed a positive ROI with win bets using our top selection in each race.

Otherwise things were a little more disappointing. When there are twelve races on tap (one was scuttled from our wagering mix when it was washed off the turf) we need to hit at least a few of the saver exactas and perhaps a tri or two. And it just didn't work out that way this week. Sometimes that's the way the cookie crumbles.

We did manage a decent cold exacta at Calder ($48.80/$2) and a couple more "saver" plays -- but overall we struggled with the exotics. As we said on Saturday, the races were competitive and that means there was some value to be had -- we just missed it!

There's always next week -- although again, the top picks were solid...

WAGERED: $398.00
COLLECTED: $178.45

Turf wagers are turf only

Belmont: Vosburgh

Ghostzapper 3-1
Aggadan 63-1
Posse 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Posse.
Ran 3rd.

Ran 3-4.

Ran 3/1-4-5-10.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-3-4-10.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-3-4-10.

Posse...Spring campaign was pointing towards this one being a top class sprinter. Faltered at Saratoga but we'll see today if maybe he just didn't take to that course. Won a G2 over this track in June.
Gygistar...2-2 on the strip. Looks to be set for a good one making third start off of layoff.
Peeping Tom...Solid this season, missing a top three finish just once in ten tries.
Ghostzapper.
My Cousin Matt.

Belmont: Flower Bowl Invitational

Dimitrova 7-2
Walzerkoenigin 16-1
Heat Haze 4-5

Sixty Seconds scratched .

Wager: $5 WP on Heat Haze.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$2 tri key Heat Haze over next three.
Ran 3/1-5.

Heat Haze...One blemish in five US tries was a just-miss effort. Consistently good.
Dimitrova...Won US debut at this trip in July. Faltered slightly to run second last time out at Belmont. The one to beat.
Sixty Seconds...2-2 since moving to this country, including a good win in a G2 at Saratoga in latest.
Riskaverse.

Belmont: Turf Classic

Sulamani 3-5
Deeliteful Irving/entry 6-1
Balto Star/entry 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Sulamani.
Collected $15.50 on the WP (3.50, 2.70).
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-7.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-4-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-4-6-7.

Sulamani...10-6-2-0 lifetime. Only two off-the-board finishes were in debut and a nice G1 in France this summer. Won Arlington Million last time on DQ. Tough Euro-invader also likes the trip.
Lunar Sovereign...What can you say? This guy tossed in a clunker at the Spa but has been solid otherwise this summer. Undefeated at Belmont.
Sabiango...G1 winner in Germany in July. Euro-invader makes US debut. Gets Lasix.
Slew Valley.
Polish Summer.

Belmont: Jockey Club Gold Cup

Mineshaft 2-5
Quest 22-1
Evening Attire 7-1

Wager: $10 exacta Mineshaft over Moon Ballad.
Ran 1/5.

Mineshaft...Currently at the front of the class in the older division. Solidifies that position with a win today and it's hard to look past him off of the facile score here in the G1 Woodward.
Moon Ballad...Dubai World Cup winner is 4-3-0-0 on dirt.

Monmouth: Red Cross

Mooji Moo 3-5
Golden Made 15-1
Bruanna 6-1

Drexel Monorail scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Boozin' Susan.

...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
No tri offered after scratches.

Boozin' Susan...Makes third start off of layoff. Comes out of winning effort in turf sprint stake. Trainer having a good meet. Adds up.
Mooji Moo...Won a similar stake here two back.
Bruanna...Faltered in a $100K stake two back but otherwise has been solid since spring.
Drexel Monorail.

Monmouth: Navajo Princess

Feisty Bull 7-2
Nault 26-1
Sonn D'Oro 9-2

Impolite scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Sarie Marais.
Ran 9th at 4-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 5-7-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 5-7-9.

Sarie Marais...Close-up second in a similar event here last month. Followed up with a trouble try in a G3 at Arlington. Should go well with clean break.
Impolite...2--2 over the course and might go well if able to give them the slip early.
Lifting the Veil...A length behind top choice two back. Might be ready to improve off of that effort with return to turf.
UK Trick.

Pimlico: Martha Washington

Derrianne 8-5
Chic Joy 9-1
Twinging and Dining 27-1

Sarie Marais scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Derrianne.
Collected $21.50 on the WP (5.20, 3.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-6-7.

Derrianne...Sometimes these Euro second-stringers just prove better than their US counterparts.
Sarie Marias...Cross entered -- see notation for Monmouth above.
A Queen's Smile...This gal will be rolling late.
Impolite.

Delaware: Caesar Rodney

Private Lap 4-5
Changeintheweather 6-5
Run to Victory 4-1

All of ours scratched when race moved to dirt.

Off turf. Our wagers cancelled.

Rochester...Gets the nod if really intended to come back one week after DQ win at Kentucky Downs.
Sir Brian's Sword...Outside post is no bonus with a sharp turn coming up quickly -- but if he can find a nice mid-pack position he should be heard from late.
Tam's Terms...Had six-race streak snapped last time after experiencing traffic trouble.
Bowman's Band...Graded stakes competitor has only one try on turf which raises question marks -- but it was a decent third.
Pay the Preacher.

Wager: $5 WP on Rochester, sub Sir Brian's Sword if scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two, sub next if scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.

Calder: Poulain D'Or

Love That Moon 3-1
Showmeitall 6-1

...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $24.40 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Love That Moon...Won a similar event last time and this seems to be his level.
Showmeitall...Rounding to form off of layoff. Second to top pick in latest.
Lavender's Lad...No wins so far this season -- but has been facing slightly better. Capable of bettering this rating.
Fire and Glory.

Arlington: Arl-Wash Futurity

Cactus Ridge 1-5
Glittergem 6-1
Texas Deputy 14-1

Wager: $5 WP on Cactus Ridge.
Collected $11.25 on the WP (2.40, 2.10).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 tri key Cactus Ridge over next three.
Ran 1/2-4-6.

Cactus Ridge...Three solid wins in three tries including two stakes. Best until beaten.
Korbyn Gold...Beaten by top pick two back -- but had some trouble at start. Won stake over the track last time.
Glittergem...They're always eligible to show improvement in their second start and if this guy moves forward he can surprise.
Night Charger.

Arlington: Arl-Wash Lassie

Zosima 5-2
Everyday Angel 3-5
Crypto's Best 21-1

Wager: $5 WP on Bad Kitty.
Ran 8th at 11-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $9.50 on the ex box ($19.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7-8.

Bad Kitty...Just have a feeling this one might be ready for the step up.
Everyday Angel...Clearly the one to beat off of monster win at Saratoga. That was in the mud however and we want to see a repeat on a dry track.
Zosima...Trainer/owner combo solid with 2YOs.
Anapest.

Fairplex: Pomona Derby

Excess Summer 1-5
Tribe 27-1
Six Numbers 52-1

Wager: $5 WP on Excess Summer.
Collected $13.00 on the WP (2.60, 2.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$2 tri key Excess Summer over next three.
Ran 1/4-5-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-4-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-5-7.

Excess Summer...It's always a question as to how they will fare over the tight Fairplex oval -- but this guy looks tough off of two solid stakes scores at Del Mar.
Atouratoura...Already proven over the track, winning Derby Trial last time.
Hell Cat...Like the angle of stretching out after two sprints off of a layoff. Might add value.
White Buck.
