Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Certainly not a bad afternoon on the top-end with five of our top selections winning in eleven races (Calder, $4.60, $5.40; Kentucky Downs, $11.80; Turfway, $3.20; Louisana Downs, $3.00). So there was a decent positive ROI of 27% in that category.

But it was a funky afternoon that could have been better -- and it could have been worse. On the "could have been worse" side of the equation, two of our winners were elevated to the top spot through DQ's. However, on the "could have been better" side, one of those DQ's actually hurt our bottom line: In the Brave Raj at Calder we had exacta and tri boxes both before and after the DQ -- so we probably would have been a lot happier with the payoff with the eventual DQ'd winner staying on top... At 14-1! As it was the tri paid $341.40/$2, however if the $30 DQ'd horse had stayed up, as opposed to the 6-5 fave, we have to assume that the triple payout would have put us in positive wagering territory for the afternoon.

Also, we had a couple of top selections just miss, 5-1 Dancal battled to the wire but ended up a short neck away and 5-2 Abderian was nosed at Kentucky Downs.

All in all a decent day on the win-end and an OK afternoon with regard to gimmicks -- but we were just one or two results short of turning the corner completely on the day...

Ran 1-3-7-8.

Celtic Sky...Has been running pretty well this year -- without a win thus far. Reunites with Santos and might be ready to po with return to Belmont.
Statement...Kimmel has been a little bit cold since beginning of Saratoga but this guy won last time and can certainly compete with these on best.
Quantum Merit...Last seems to indicate he's in good form now.
Robbie's Rockin.

Belmont: Noble Damsel

Wonder Again 6-1
Dancal 5-1

Ran 2-3-5-8.

Dancal...Missed this one at the Spa when making a solid US debut, winning at 9-1. Grass record is superb, including wins over the boys in S Africa. Should be able to compete with this crowd.
Stylish...Working on a four race win streak -- including two G3's.
Something Ventured...Typically is in the hunt.
Delta Princess.
Dedication.

Calder: Brave Raj

Marina De Chavon...Showed marked improvement in second start to break maiden. If able to hold that form she could prove tough.
Alarkandadove...Nice winner of a mdn clm race in debut, then stepped up to be a decent third in a stake despite some trouble.
Horah For Bailey...Experience counts with these youngsters and this one is 3-2-1-0 including a minor stake.
Ride Her Out.
Prohibido Olividar.

Calder: Foolish Pleasure

Stolen Time...Decent debut. Followed up with a very nice maiden score. Two turns is a question mark of course but should go well.
Tap Dancer...Solid 4-2-1-1 record including a stake last time -- however, outside post is a concern.
Orchid Thief...Should be in the hunt if able to improve at all of off good first-out win.
Hopefortheroses.
Second Of June.

Kentucky Downs: Ky Cup Turf Dash

Fredericktown 6-1
Abderian 5-2

Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-5-6.

Abderian...Solid turf record. 1-1 at the trip. Has yet to win this year but has been knocking at the door and inside post should be a benefit with start virtually on the turn.
Testify...Capped off a solid spring with a big win in Philly stake. Kind of dull in two starts since but he might be ready to bounce back to best effort.
Callthesheriff...Clearly will be in the mix if able to duplicate effort from last -- but that was over two months ago which is a concern.
Red Lightning.
No Jacket Required.

Kentucky Downs: Ky Cup Mile

Hard Buck 3-1
Gretchen's Star 8-1
Last Stand 7-2

...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-6.

Mystery Giver...Has been right there in three summertime starts. Looks capable of getting it done today.
Hard Buck...Foreign invader got the job done nicely in US debut -- but he's facing a somewhat bigger field today. We'll see.
Red Mountain...Jock has managed to squeeze a couple of nice tries out of him.
Last Stand.

Ran 4-5-9-10.

Peacefally...Ran second despite trouble in nice Saratoga alw last time. Expecting a good effort.
Morena Park...Sheppard turfer threw in a dull effort last time but had some trouble. Capable of competing here with clean trip.
Flager...Jock has gotten a couple of good runs out of her. Should be rolling late.
Dancing.
Maliziosa.
Voodoo Lady.

Kentucky Downs: Ky Cup Turf H'cp

Rochester 9-2
Quest Star 5-2
DQ - Art Variety 13-1

Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $22.30 on the ex box ($44.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Rochester...Sheppard trainee has been off two months -- but we'll accord him a slight nod as the reigning champ in this race. Won by two lengths last year at 11-1.
Continental Red...Looked over the hill this winter but has rebounded nicely this summer.
Quest Star...Speed is always scary in these marathons and this one could prove tough if able to get out there with no challenges early.
Act of War.

Turfway: Marfa

Private Horde 3-5
Deer Lake 5-1
Paging 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on Private Horse.
Collected $14.00 on the WP (3.20, 2.40).

Collected $5.90 on the ex box ($11.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $31.20 on the tri box ($62.40/$2).

Private Horde...7-5-2-0 in 2003 and validated his class with smashing win in G2 Vanderbilt last time. Big Beyer number raises concern of a bounce but we have to stick with him moving from graded company into a $75K stake.
Requesto...Baffert sprinter had a real bridesmaid's record -- until winning two of last three.
Deer Lake...Speedster might hold on for a piece.
Paging.

Louisiana Downs: Super Derby

Ten Most Wanted 1-2
Soto 6-5

Collected $21.00 on the exacta ($4.20/$2).
...$4 tri Ten Most Wanted over Soto over Zydeco Affair/Kool Humor.
Ran 1/2/4-5.
...$1 tri key Ten Most Wanted over next three.
Ran 1/2-4-5.

Ten Most Wanted...Threw in a clunker in the Derby but has been pretty solid otherwise -- including a convincing win last time in the G1 Travers. Might prefer more ground but we'll stick with him off of that solid Spa score.
Soto...Undefeated in five starts. A little concerned that the tough stretch battle last time might have taken a little bit out of him -- but he's had a month and a half to recover.
Zydeco Affair.
Kool Humor.

Fairplex: Barretts Debutante

Dixie High 4-5
Blowing Bartok 7-1
Absolute Nectar 5-1

...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-6.

Absolute Nectar...Had some trouble in G2 stake -- two nice wins bookend that dull effort. Shipped north last time to beat the boys.
Dixie High...Maiden breaker was quite impressive.
She's Gottogetaway...2-2 including a state-bred stake win last time.
Miss Bleus Clues.
