Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Not a bad day really. Our fourteen events were whittled down to twelve after the turf races in NY and Florida were washed onto the main tracks. But twelve races still meant that we were in pretty deep, and while we didn't manage a profit, the loss was rather small. And with a little judicious wagering the picks offered some decent value on the afternoon.

We managed to collect something in every race we played. Six winners on top in twelve tries (Churchill, $2.60; Hawthorne, $3.20; Lone Star, $5.00; Hollywood, $4.80, 6.00, $8.40). Our second pick won five more -- meaning our first or second pick scored in eleven of the twelve races.

Furthermore, our top two picks combined for five exactas (Churchill, $4.40/$2; Hollywood, $54.60, 16.40, 16.20, 20.40). We also had a couple of tri's with our top two over our fourth choice (Churchill, $15.40; Hollywood, $281.20). And it's worth noting that while we don't play Pick Three's on our Coast-to-coast cards (typically we don't have three races in a row from any venue), Hollywood's Gold Rush card offered the chance for that type of play and you only would have had to venture two deep in the C2C picks to cash five P3's (Hollywood races 1-3, $199.20/$2; races 2-4, $342.80; races 3-5, $97.60; races 4-6, $94.00; races 5-7, $148.20).

So it was a nice day -- but frustrating in that we couldn't get into the black. The flukey thing was the lack of triples. We managed one nice one and one value-less tri -- otherwise we ran 1-2-4 in three races and any of those extra tri hits might have made the difference. But, with a full plate floating out there we have to feel that the handicapping was pretty solid and we're ready for more when the premier event rolls around next week...
