Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Kind of similar to last week...The handicapping was fine, but as we predicted, it was hard to find much value on the card. Case in point, ours ran 1-2-3 in order in the Santa Anita Oaks -- but in the short five horse field we decided to simply take a stand with a $20 quinella. Ugh. You kind of hope to at least double your money in that situation -- getting perhaps $3.80 or $4.00/$2 for your trouble, instead we collected a hardly-worth-the-effort $2.20/$2. We squeezed a little bit of value out of the exacta and tri at Gulfstream -- but even there the short field there kept the prices lower than you might hope for with a 9-1 shot on top. And finally things might have turned out a little brighter if, at Golden Gate, our 11-1 third choice hadn't finished fourth and instead completed a cold tri for us.

Two winners on top in six events (Santa Anita, $2.80; Golden Gate, $11.60). We scored a couple of cold exactas and has our top two flip-flopped for another. We also collected three tri's.

It was a low-value afternoon, but we eeked out a profit.

WAGERED: $254.00
COLLECTED: $291.30

Turf wagers are turf only

Gulfstream: Richter Scale BC H'cp

Tour Of The Cat 9-1
Burning Roma 5-2
entry - Highway Prospector 3-5

Wager: $5 W on Native Heir.
Ran 3/7 - entry.
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 3/7-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $39.30 on the ex box ($78.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $77.40 on the tri box ($154.80/$2).

Native Heir...Solid runner although his last two were something special. Seems as though he likes the strip and if that love affair continues he'll be tough -- but looking back beyond his Gulfstream engagements he doesn't appear as invincible. Can't go against off the nice G3 win last time but he's not unbeatable.
Binthebest...Second to the top pick in latest and ran second in this event last year.
Tour Of The Cat...Fairly consistently competitive in stakes company -- though not graded stakes.
Burning Roma.

Fair Grounds: FG Oaks

Lady Tak 1-1
Atlantic Ocean 8-5
Belle Of Perintown 5-2

Wager: $5 W on Atlantic Ocean.
Ran 2nd.
...$10 exacta Atlantic Ocean over Lady Tak.
Ran 2-1.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Collected $22.50 on the ex box ($9.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top three.
Collected $7.10 on the tri box ($14.20/$2).

Atlantic Ocean...Baffert filly was perhaps a little light Beyer-wise for this level -- albeit while collecting a nice bankroll -- until last couple. Those seem to indicate some improvement as a 3YO and we'll hope that's the case.
Lady Tak...Probable fave is undefeated for Asmussen including a nice $100K stake last time. Clearly capable of passing this test but has been on the bench briefly and might not be cranked up.
Belle Of Perintown.

Oaklawn: Honeybee

Mr Trusty Cat 3-2
Ruby's Reception 5-2
Explosive Beauty 6-5

Wager: $5 WP on Ruby's Reception.
Collected $8.00 on the WP (xxx, $3.20).
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $7.90 on the ex box ($15.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $15.60 on the tri box ($31.20/$2).

Ruby's Reception...Trainer is pretty solid off of the layoff and if this filly shows even some slight improvement as a 3YO she'll be tough.
Explosive Beauty...Has taken to the Arkansas water winning two sprint stakes. Expect a good try stretching to two turns.
Golden Reputation...Makes third start of the meet and might be primed for a nice effort.
Mr Trusty Cat.

Santa Anita: SA Oaks

Composure 2-5
Elloluv 8-5
Go For Glamour 10-1

Wager: $20 quinella top two.
Collected $22.00 on the quinella ($2.20/$2).

Composure...Baffert has talked about aiming this filly for the KY Derby. Has a couple of stakes wins over the track including one last fall at the trip. Bailey in to ride. Tough cookie.
Elloluv...Clearly the one to beat as she only missed by a neck against the top pick last time and beat her two back.
Go For Glamour.

Santa Anita: Tokyo City H'cp

Kela 6-1
Truly A Judge 20-1
Gondolieri 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Euchre.
Ran 7th at 6-1.
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 6-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-6-7.

Euchre...Frankel stakes runner shot an oh-fer last year but should appreciate the drop into an ungraded affair.
Tough Game...Lightly raced Baffert 4YO is clearly on the improve and might be a good stakes performer in the making.
Cottage...Wasn't able to compete in graded company earlier in the meet but should be heard from here.
Truly A Judge.

Golden Gate: El Camino Real Derby

Ocean Terrace 9-2
Ministers Wild Cat 6-5
Ten Most Wanted 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Ocean Terrace.
Collected $39.50 on the WP ($11.60, 4.20).
...$3 exacta box top two.
Collected $39.00 on the ex box ($26.00/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $13.00 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-10.

Ocean Terrace...Tested here but wins in first two tries indicate this one might be this good.
Ministers Wild Cat...Came north for Drysdale a month ago to win the Golden State Mile. Deserving fave.
Winning Stripes...Second to Ministers Wild Cat in that Feb stake.
Allwood.
