Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Well the handicapping aspect of the afternoon was solid. We almost doubled our money ROI-wise in the winners-on-top category. Plus, we cashed an exacta in all seven races. And we had a tri combo in six of the seven. The only downside was a lack of any real value among the plays Saturday. Our top exacta hit was for a little less than $40/$2. And the top tri was only $126.40/$2. However, the march to the windows after each race allowed the mini-scores to add up and we were able to end the day with a decent profit.

Winners on top in four of the seven events (Aqueduct, $5.00; Gulfstream, $2.80; Fair Grounds, $9.60; and Santa Anita, $9.60). That translates to a $27.00 return on a $14.00 investment ($2W x seven races).

We also had cold exactas at both Fair Grounds ($39.20/$2) and the 'Big Cap at Santa Anita ($19.40/$2). At Oaklawn our top three completed the tri -- in slightly mixed up order -- for a nice $84.00/$2 tri. And our top four finished in the top four spots in three races -- however only one of those offered superfecta wagering, but it was worth it as ours completed the $1419.80/$2 super in the Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita. That's the race where we scored the $126/$2 tri -- it certainly would have been better if our 22-1 Century City hadn't been necked out of the show spot. But, all-in-all it was a good afternoon.

WAGERED: $359.00
COLLECTED: $475.60

Turf wagers are turf only

Aqueduct: Busher

Elegant Designer 3-2
entry - Xtra Heart 3-1
entry - Virgin Voyage 3-1
Cyber Secret 2-1

Wager: $5 WP on Elegant Designer.
Collected $19.75 on the WP ($5.00, 2.90).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $6.30 on the ex box ($12.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $12.20 on the tri box ($24.40/$2).

Elegant Designer...Last seen taking the Great State Juv Filly race -- but that was almost three months ago. Seems to be perhaps a bit better than these but the layoff is a concern, although the trainer's stat in that category is impressive.
Cyber Secret...The right style -- front-runner -- for winning an inner track stake. And she did that last time out.
Bavarian Girl...On the improve since moving into McPeek barn.
Xtra Heart.

Gulfstream: Rampart H'cp

Allamerican Bertie 2-5
Smok'n Frolic 5-2
Softly 7-1

Wager: $5 W on Allamerican Bertie.
Collected $7.00 on the W ($2.80).
...$4 exacta Allamerican Bertie over Redoubled Miss.
Ran 1-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $3.00 on the ex box ($6.00/$2).
...$3 tri key Allamerican Bertie over next two.
Ran 1/2-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $5.80 on the tri box ($11.60/$2).

Allamerican Bertie...Hard to see past this one taking them gate to wire.
Redoubled Miss...Ran third to top pick here last out, just missing second. Looks primed for a good effort.
Smok'n Frolic...Hmmm, was a pretty solid 2YO in '01. Not as impressive last year -- although she ended the season with a nice stake win and followed to begin '03 with another stake score so it seems she's in good form now.
Softly.

Fair Grounds: Bayou BC H'cp

Quick Tip 7-2
Histoire Sainte 9-2
Snow Dance 6-5

Wager: $5 WP on Quick tip.
Collected $35.00 on the WP ($9.60, 4.40).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $78.40 on the ex box ($39.20/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $19.60 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $42.00 on the tri box ($84.00/$2).

Quick Tip...Looked to be in top form winning a G3 at Churchill last fall. Followed that with a couple of seconds on this grass -- with a drop in Beyers. Let's think she's ready to pop again with a couple of local tries under her belt.
Histoire Saint...Just behind top pick in latest after having to wait for room late. Excellent 5-4-0-1 record over the track makes her dangerous.
Caught In The Rain...Another that looked good in KY last fall and faltered slightly with move south. On the bench since late last year but Asmussen turfer might add some value to gimmicks.
Snow Dance.

Oaklawn: Southwest

Great Notion 3-1
Alke 7-2
Comic Truth 3-2

Wager: $5 WP on Comic Truth.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $17.30 on the ex box ($34.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $42.40 on the tri box ($84.80/$2).

Comic Truth...Off since running second to Outta Here in rich Delta Downs race in December. Trainer OK off the layoff and this one looks just a little bit better than these.
Great Notion...Stretching out off of three nice KY sprints. If able to shake free from Alke early this one might be tough to catch.
Alke...Off since November when second to Champali in a G3 at Churchill. Still lightly raced and trying two-turns for first time.
Sir Cherokee.

Santa Anita: San Rafael

Rojo Toro 2-1
Spensive 5-1
Crowned Dancer 17-1

Peace Rules scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Peace Rules.
Scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two, sub next if scratch.
Ran 4-5.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $13.10 on the ex box ($26.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Peace Rules...Blossomed when moved to grass -- but this is a dirt race. So it's a big question mark. But Frankel runner shot a nice bullet in the AM on 2/16 so we're keeping our fingers crossed that talent transfers to the main track.
Our Bobby V...Should get good position going into the first turn which will benefit this speedball. Ran second in G2 event last time and drops back a half-furlong today.
Sum Trick...Managed a good second to Kafwain at 19-1 on 2/1.
Spensive.
Rojo Toro.

Santa Anita: Kilroe Mile H'cp

Redattore 5-1
Good Journey 6-5
Decarchy 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Decarchy.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $14.70 on the ex box ($29.40/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $63.20 on the tri box ($126.40/$2).

Decarchy...Has burned some money lately but won this event last year and blinkers might shake him up enough for a repeat.
Century City...Rolling the dice a little bit here as this one has been disappointing since arriving stateside. But perhaps last stake win -- albeit at Turf Paradise might've signaled a turnaround.
Good Journey...Always -- and we mean always -- in the hunt.
Redattore.

Santa Anita: The Big Cap

Milwaukee Brew 7-2
Congaree 3-5
Kudos 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on Milwaukee Brew.
Collected $35.00 on the WP (9.60, 4.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $19.40 on the ex box ($19.40/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $9.70 on the ex box ($19.40/$2).
...$1 tri top three.
Ran 1-2-4.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $31.80 on the tri box ($63.60/$2).

Milwaukee Brew...Won this event last year -- and while pace today looks to be less swift, the nice race last time might set him up for a good try today.
Congaree...Clearly the one to beat off of last three wins. Question mark however is the distance.
Pleasantly Perfect...Has yet to miss a check over the surface. Will be coming late.
Kudos.
