Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Back in the saddle again..

After ending 2002 with a bang over the last couple of months of the year we started '03 slowly, ending January in the red and coming into the last week of February with the possibililty of going either way depending on our results Saturday. Well, it was a very good day. And the February results now mean we've wound up in the black during four of the last six months since Coast-to-coast came to equidaily.com in September.

As stated yesterday, it was a very competitive wide-open card. That resulted in our missing the 19-1 winner at Aqueduct and the 27-1 winner (29-1 completed the exacta) at Tampa Bay. On the other hand it also meant we found some nice value in the wagers we did cash.

A little light on the top end with only two winners on top in the eight events (Laurel, $4.00; Fair Grounds, $13.20). But we made up for it with the gimmicks. In the General George at Laurel our third choice beat our second pick for a $66.80/$2 exacta. Our top choice completed the generous $311.60/$2 tri. In the Fritchie at Laurel we nailed the exacta ($12.20/$2) and tri ($37.00/$2) cold. At Fair Grounds we had another cold exacta ($34.20/$2).

But the real eye-popper of the day was our score at Oaklawn. Our top pick, 3-5 Crafty Shaw ran fourth -- meanwhile our third choice won, second choice ran second, and fourth pick showed. That gave us a $104.20/$2 exacta and an extraordinary $1154.20/$2 tri.

A 150% ROI. It was a great day -- and a super way to end the month.

WAGERED: $414.00
COLLECTED $1038.50.

February Totals:
Wagered: $1232.00
Collected: $1654.45
34% ROI for the month

Turf wagers are turf only

Aqueduct: Best Turn

Second in Command 19-1
Super Fuse 2-1
Mustbinthefrontrow 13-1

Wager: $5 WP on Alysweep.
Ran 6th at 6-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 5-6.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-5-6.

Alysweep...Has done nothing wrong since being introduced to the inner track -- and that includes a big Beyer stake win last time. Can probably bounce slightly off of that effort and still win.
Deadline...Maryland shipper is on three race streak since returning from brief freshening in December. Tested here but looks good enough to compete.
Mustbinthefrontrow...Also in from Maryland and looks to be improving nicely with each start.
Super Fuse.
Desert Warrior.

Laurel: Gen George H'cp

My Cousin Matt 4-1
Peeping Tom 7-1
Disturbingthepeace 7-2

Wager: $5 WP on Disturbingthepeace.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $33.40 on the ex box ($66.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $155.80 on the tri box ($311.60/$2).

Disturbingthepeace...Put together a prolonged win-streak last year. Likes the trip. Has a work over the surface. Got a good race under belt last time despite tardy start.
Peeping Tom...Making third start since layoff and first two looked good. Any move forward makes him tough. 1-1 over the track.
My Cousin Matt...Trip to SoCal for G1 last time might have been asking too much. Should fit with this group though, if ready after brief layoff.
D'Wildcat.

Laurel: Barbara Fritchie H'cp

Xtra Heat 1-1
Carson Hollow 9-5
Spelling 9-1

Wager: $5 exacta Xtra Heat over Carson Hollow.
Collected $30.50 on the ex ($12.20/$2).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $12.20.
...$2 exacta Xtra Heat over Spelling.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $6.60.
...$2 tri key Xtra Heat over next three.
Collected $37.00 on the tri key ($37.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $18.50 on the tri box.

Xtra Heat...Looks primed for this event over track she likes and at trip she enjoys.
Carson Hollow...Gotta feel a little shaky looking at the layoff and the poor BC try that preceded it -- but everything else in the PP's says this is the one to beat.
Spelling...Loves the track and the trip and might add value to gimmicks.
Zonk.

Tampa Bay: Sam F Davis

White Buck 27-1
Freedom Lane 29-1
Coach Jimi Lee 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Colita.
Ran 5th at 1-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-5-6-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-5-6-9.

Colita...Woke up with the addition of lasix -- or was it a liking for Aqueduct's inner track? We'll find out today. If the improvement shown in the last two is real this one should handle these, even from outside post.
Coach Jimi Lee...Speed kills and this guy should be out in front early -- only question is how long he can keep motoring.
Patriotic Flame...Was second to Trust N Luck two back.
Supervisor.

Gulfstream: Donn H'cp

Harlan's Holiday 2-1
Hero's Tribute 4-1
Puzzlement 18-1

Wager: $5 WP on Blue Burner.
Ran 5th at 8-1.
...$2 exacta box Blue Burner and each of the next three.
Ran 5/1-2-9.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $17.50 on the ex box ($35.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5-9.

Blue Burner...We were on this one's Derby bandwagon last year -- let's see if we can catch some value. It's a stretch but the comeback effort was excellent. Will have to bump the Beyer up a few notches but note the figure improvement in second Gulfstream start last year.
Harlan's Holiday...Has done well on the track and is 3-3 at the trip. Prep effort was gorgeous.
Bonus Pack...Finished nicely behind Harlan's Holiday last time. Worth taking a look at if we can expect any improvement in third start off bench.
Hero's Tribute.

Fair Grounds: Chou Croute H'cp

Ifyouprefersilver 5-1
Salty Farma 3-2
Took Out 10-1

Wager: $5 WP on Ifyouprefersilver.
Collected $46.50 on the WP ($13.20, 5.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $34.20 on the ex box ($34.20/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $17.10 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7-8.

Ifyouprefersilver...Only blemish in five tries is a wide trip at Keeneland. Won a minor stake last time and has the potential to be a good one. Tested today.
Salty Farma...Hard to know what to make of that last performance -- but it was too good to ignore. Anywhere close to a repeat would make this one dangerous.
Dusti's Tune...Seemed to take a liking to the main track last time.
Blue Guru.

Oaklawn: Essex H'cp

Colorful Tour 5-1
Ask The Lord 8-1
Premeditation 12-1

Wager: $5 WP on Crafty Shaw.
Ran 4th at 3-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $52.10 on the ex box ($104.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $577.10 on the tri box ($1154.20/$2).

Crafty Shaw...Reigning champ in this event probably got enough out of prep to give a good account of self again this year.
Ask The Lord...Throw out the two turf tries and this one has been pretty solid since late summer.
Colorful Tour...Usually in the hunt and won nicely here last time.
Premeditation.

Santa Anita: Las Flores H'cp

Spring Meadow 5-2
Brisquette 7-1
DH - September Secret 9-2
DH - Wild Tickle 24-1

Wager: $5 WP on September Secret.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-6-7.

September Secret...Not really comfortable picking one with this long of a layoff -- but the early career seemed to indicate there was some real potential here. So maybe there's some class hiding in there that can overcome the bench time.
Secret Liaison...Another that has not raced in quite awhile -- but works are good. Looks like she'll take them as far as she can go.
Brisquette...Turf try last time might set this one up nicely.
Shameful.
