Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

There we go...It took awhile but we finally returned a weekly profit in '03. As we said Saturday, the handicapping has been fairly solid, with a decent number of winners on top, but some unpredictable runners underneath have kept the gmmicks -- for the most part -- frustratingly out of reach over the past five weeks. However, this week we managed to get back on track for 22% ROI.

Two winners on top in six races (Gulfstream, $4.20; Oaklawn, 3.80). Aqueduct stymied us again this week. We left the winner, Boston Park, out of our mix -- and looking at the weird way the race was run, with the winner getting away with thieve-like fractions, we have to wonder if Boston Park would manage another win if this same race was run ten more times. He had shown no success around two turns and really hadn't lived up to some early promise shown last summer. About the only pro was having DW Lukas as trainer -- and we all know that D Wayne can surprise in these 3YO races.

Kind of split things at Gulfstream, with our top pick doing little in the grass event, and yet we grabbed a small gimmick in the dirt stake. In the midwest, we ran first and third with our only two picks in the short field at Oaklawn. While Fair Grounds provided our best hit of the afternoon when we collected the exacta ($106.20/$2) and tri ($266.60/$2). Finally, we only went two deep at Santa Anita with a short field in their stake and our top two came through to score our single quinella wager.

WAGERED: $213.00
COLLECTED: $274.30

Turf wagers are turf only

Aqueduct: Whirlaway

Boston Park 7-1

Ran 5th at 4-5.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-5.
...$2 tri key Torre And Zim over next two.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-5.

Torre and Zim...Dutrow runner passed first level alw test over this track impressively and might be a good one.
Grey Comet...Hard to fault this undefeated state-bred. Won an open stake here last month.
Gimmeawink...A question mark around two-turns but have a feeling he'll do OK today.
Mustang Jock.

Gulfstream: The Very One H'cp

San Dare 6-1
Tweedside 4-1
Hi Tech Honeycomb 12-1

Beyond the Waves scratched.

Ran 5-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-7.

Uriah...Just got up for a nice NY win in US debut. Followed that with a dud last time but we'll give another chance with the switch to Mott/Bailey.
New Economy...Win in Calder G2 last time seems to indicate a return to good form.
San Dare...Always in the hunt.
Beyond The Waves.

Gulfstream: Sabin H'cp

Allamerican Bertie 1-1
Small Promises 9-1
Redoubled Miss 33-1

Wager: $5 WP on Allamerican Bertie.
Collected $18.50 on the WP (4.20, 3.20).

...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $13.90 on the ex box ($27.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2(entry)- 4(entry)- 6 -9.

Allamerican Bertie...Don't see anyone going out and challenging her early -- and therefore she'll be tough.
Tonight's Wager...Dominated in Puerto Rico and has been steadily improving since arriving stateside -- including nice alw win here on 1/20.
Attfield entry...Small Promises is preferred with a solid 3-2-1-0 record at the trip and going-well form. Tuff Chick however has run well on occasion.

Fair Grounds: Pan Zareta

Fuse It 11-1
Stonington 7-2
Distinctive Code 3-2

Wager: $5 WP on Distinctive Code.
Ran 3rd.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $53.10 on the ex box ($106.20/$2).
...$2 tri key Distinctive Code over next three.
Ran 3/1-2-4.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $133.30 on the tri box ($266.60/$2).

Distinctive Code...Has won the last five tries at this trip, including a solid win here last month.
Run For Little Bit...Has shown an affinity for the strip. Finished behind top pick last time.
Stonington...2-2 on the track and has the potential to surprise.
Fuse It.

Oaklawn: American Beauty

Emily Ring 4-5
Princess Jen 2-1
Southern Tour 2-1

Lake Charles scratched.

Wager: $5 W on Emily Ring.
Collected $9.50 on the W (3.80).
...$5 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$5 exacta Emily ring over Southern Tour.
Ran 1-3.
...$2 exacta Emily ring over Lake Charles.

Emily Ring...Coming off of two nice stakes wins at the trip. Going well.
Southern Tour...Likes the track and the trip but has been off since summer. Trainer has solid stats off the bench though.

Santa Anita: La Canada

Got Koko 2-1
Sightseek 4-5
Bella Bellucci 3-1

Wager: $20 quinella Sightseek/Got Koko.
Collected $46.00 on the quinella ($4.60/$2).

Sightseek...Believe that Frankel's got a budding star here and filly went well last time to get nipped by Affluent. Should be a little tighter and might prefer this trip.
Got Koko...Clearly they've got this one going right now.
