Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

We managed a nice 62% ROI on Saturday -- but the day played out in a quirky fashion, fitting for the competitiveness of the card.

Winners on top in three of the nine races (Aqueduct, 6.40; Santa Anita, 2.80; Golden Gate, 12.60). Our top pick bested our third choice for a $48.60/$2 exacta in NY. Our second choice completed the $112.50/$2 tri. The big score of the day was at Golden Gate where we had the same scenario of top pick over third choice over second for a $101.80/$2 exacta and $253.00/$2 tri.

Otherwise, things fell apart a little at Calder with some longshots making for a mostly unpredictable Grand Slam II set of four races. Likewise the La Brea in SoCal was a surprise with three prices hitting the board. So there were a few races that were "out there" enough that we can't get too agitated about missing them.

Still, in the end we wound up with a decent return on our investment and we also ran 1-3 in a couple of exactas and 1-2-4 in a tri -- those would have made the afternoon even better. But with a 62% return on such a tough afternoon we really can't complain too loudly.

WAGERED: $376.00
COLLECTED: $608.30

Turf wagers are turf only

Aqueduct: Gallant fox H'cp

Coyote Lakes 2-1
Pleasant Breeze 6-1
Fisher Pond 2-1

Wager: $5 WP on Coyote Lakes.
Collected $25.50 on the WP (6.40, 3.80).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $24.30 on the ex box ($48.60).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $56.25 on the tri box ($112.50).

Coyote Lakes...Tries to win this event for third year in a row. Comes in off of similar effort to that which took him to victory in '01. Loves the track and is capable at the trip.
Fisher Pond...Has done well in two stakes recently but might get a sterner test today as both previous tries were off-the-turfers. Still, Pletcher 3YO could be rounding into a nice one.
Pleasant Breeze...If jock can find the front from the outside post he might be able to nurse this one along nicely on the front-end.
Haggs Castle.

Calder: La Prevoyante H'cp

New Economy 22-1
Jennasietta 29-1
Tweedside 7-1

Stay Forever scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Mot Juste.
Ran 7th at 2-1
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 7-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 7-8-11.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 7-8-11.

Mot Juste...Took awhile for this Euro-import to find "Yankee-legs" but has been going well last few and Clement should have her ready. Bailey onboard a plus.
Uriah...On the other hand this Euro took to the State beautifully winning first start last time in G2 at Aqueduct. A repeat here will make her tough to beat.
Stay Forever...Wolfson filly is a solid 7-5-1-1 on Calder turf. Faces a little tougher here than she's used to but capable of giving a good account of herself.
Sunscreen.

Calder: Stage Door Betty H'cp

Stormy Frolic 12-1
Small Promises 1-1
Redoubled Miss 7-1

Wager: $5 WP on Coolbythepool.
Ran 4th at 4-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$1 tri key Coolbythepool over next three.
Ran 4/2-3-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-7.

Coolbythepool...Solid Wolfson performer already has plenty of stakes winning experience this track and trip.
Redoubled Miss...Behind top pick two back then followed up with a nice stake win.
Sara's Success...Inconsistent and not having a great season but we have to hope the last was an indication of a solid turnaround.
Attfield entry...Small Promises/Tuff Chick.

Calder: FW Hooper H'cp

The Judge Sez Who 7-2
Best of the Rest 8-5
Dancing Guy 12-1

Wager: $5 WP on Best of the Rest.
Collected $8.00 on the WP (xxx, 3.20).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $15.40 on the ex box ($30.80).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-7.

Best of the Rest...12-19 on the track. Just won a stake this track and trip last time. Bailey on return ride. Adds up nicely -- but question mark is raised by flop as fave in this race last year.
Booklet...Solid return to races in Churchill alw last time says this one is ready and might take this gate to wire.
The Judge Sez Who...Solid performer this year on the 3YO B-circuit. Second to top pick last time.
Cool N Collective.

Calder: McKnight H'cp

Man From Wiclow 5-2
Serial Bride 15-1
Rochester 2-1

Wager: $5 WP on Rochester.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-10.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-10.

Rochester...Can't knock the record over the distance and might be ready to rebound with return to east coast.
Man From Wicklow...Might find these easier than some he faced this summer. Capable if ready off of the brief layoff. Bailey rides.
Dawn Of The Condor...Feel that the trip over the track last time might set him up for a better run today.
Whitmore's Conn.

Fair Grounds: Woodchopper H'cp

Skate Away 5-1
Seainsky 22-1
Runaway Choice 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Better Talk Now.
Ran 8th at 6-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-8.

Better Talk Now...5-3-0-0 since switching to turf in early summer and even the defeats are deceivingly good. Off since 11/2 but trainer is OK with layoff stats. Should go well.
Skate Away...Undefeated in only two turf tries, including a nice prep for this last time.
Extra Check...Could be ready to run a good one and should appreciate return to 3YO ranks.
Runaway Choice.

Santa Anita: Hill Rise

Peace Rules/entry 2-5
Singletary 9-2
Big Repetitas/entry 2-5

Man Among Men scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Man Among Men.
Scratched.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $3.50 on the ex box ($7.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top three.
Scratched.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5.

Man Among Men...Faltered as fave last time but let's see if return to SA does the trick. Won restricted stake here at this trip two back.
Peace Rules...Finished in front of top pick last time. Third place finisher that day went on to win Delta Jackpot last week. The one to beat.
Singletary...Debut win was excellent and any improvement might allow this one to surprise here.
Puget Sound.

Santa Anita: La Brea

Get Koko 17-1
Spring Meadow 19-1
Erica's Smile 17-1

Adoration scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on You.
Ran 5th at 4-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 5-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 4-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 4-5-6.

You...The layoff is a huge concern -- but her Test score at this distance was one of the best performances of the year. Field is full of inconsistencies but this one gets slim vote if ready to give best effort.
Lacie Girl...Hollendorfer filly is undefeated in four NoCal tries. Tested today but might be this good.
Bella Bellucchi...Drysdale 3YO has yet to miss the board in eight tries. Plenty of talent but lightly raced which raises question marks.
Adoration.

Golden Gate: Corte Madera

Maddie's Charm 5-1
Tale Of A Dream 9-1
Viansa Ossidiana 3-5

Wager: $5 WP on Maddie's Charm.
Collected $48.00 on the WP (12.60, 6.60).
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $50.90 on the ex box ($101.80/$2).
...$2 tri key Maddie's Charm over next three.
Collected $253.00 on the tri key ($253.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $126.50.

Maddie's Charm...Two turn experience helps and this one is coming off of a nice maiden win at the trip last time -- albeit on turf.
Viansa Ossidiana...5-2-2-1 this season. Failed last time in sprint stake but had some trouble. Tries two turns today.
Tale Of A Dream...Should appreciate return to NoCal but is another with distance concerns.
Magic Smoke.
