Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Wow. We got November off with a bang and a pleasant rebound after last week's struggle with the Breeders' Cup card. Clearly this was one of the best week's in recent memory.

Only three winners on top in eleven races -- but we made them count. At $16.60, 18.00, and 8.00 we just about doubled our money in the "win" area as a $2 W wager in each race would have cost $22 and returned $42.60.

Plus there was a very nice mix of gimmicks to round things out. The topper was probably the straight tri in the Cal Cup Distaff H'cp at odds of 3-1, 25-1, and 3-1 respectively. The payoff there was $120.20/$2 for the cold exacta and $549.00/$2 for the cold tri. A couple of races earlier we had a boxed tri on the Santa Anita card for $636.40/$2.

Overall we collected six tri's over the eleven race afternoon. There was also a good mix of winning exactas among the plays.

On the face of these results you would think it would be hard to find anything disappointing about the outcome -- but the results of the Knickerbocker at Aqueduct will continue to vex for awhile...Occasionally we include a fifth pick -- typically because either we anticipate a scratch among the top four, or we simply can't separate the last couple of picks. The latter was the case in the Knickerbocker and of course, following our 7-1 top pick home was our 17-1 fifth choice, which in turn just nosed out our 9-2 second pick. The first disappoint was missing out on the cold exacta with our top two picks at nice prices. But the second -- and ultimately bigger disappoint was that our fifth choice was a "sub" selection, to be used in case of a scratch. Hence, with no scratch occurring among our top four picks, we missed a nice $198.50/$2 exacta and a gorgeous $1707.00/$2 tri. Doh!

Can't complain too much though. It was a successful afternoon.

RESULTS
Added Edge 5-2
Outer Reef 6-1
Boston Bull 4-5

Wager: $5 WP on Boston Bull.
Ran 3rd.
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 tri key Boston Bull over next three.
Ran 3/1-2-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $40.25 on the tri box ($80.50/$2).

Boston Bull...Just missed in debut. Broke maiden in second try. Then straight to a G3 win last time. 2-2 with blinkers. Hard to go past at this point.
Added Edge...Canadian invader in undefeated in three tries -- two of them stakes. Disappointment of good Canadian Wando last week reverberates but this one looks tough like the real deal.
Outer Reef...Kimmel runner looked promising in first three starts then was crushed in G1 Champagne. Let's not give up yet and hope for a rebound with Bailey returning for the ride in this slightly easier spot.
Formidable Fox.

Aqueduct: Knickerbocker H'cp

Dawn of the Condor 7-1
Serial Bride 17-1
Polish Miner 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Dawn Of The Condor.
Collected $64.00 on the WP (16.80, 8.80).
...$2 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-3-6-9.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-3-6-9.

Dawn Of The Condor...Seems to be improving through the season and if Chavez can get some position early this one might be able to get first jump turning for home.
Polish Miner...A couple of good Beyer races this summer but not a whole lot of eye-popping performance to recommend. Kind of hoping that the decent dirt try last time at Laurel might be a sign of good things.
North East Bound...6YO has knocked heads with the best but has looked kind of dull in last two of the layoff. If third start back is a charm maybe he'll revert to prior good form.
I'm All Yours.
Serial Bride.

Churchill: Pocahontas

Belle Of Perintown 8-1
Star Of Atticus 7-1
Souris 1-1

Wager: $5 WP on Belle Of Perintown.
Collected $66.00 on the WP (18.00, 8.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $53.10 on the ex box ($106.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $188.40 on the tri box ($376.80/$2).

Belle Of Perintown...Looks like it might have just taken her a little time to get the hang of it. Broke maiden last time a Keeneland when shedding the blinkers. A decent second two back at this trip. Might offer some value.
Youcan'ttakeme...2-2 against fillies -- and a decent fourth against the boys. Interesting work pattern shows two bullets, two days apart within the past week.
Souris...Won first two convincingly, including a stake. But faltered slightly last time at this trip.
Star Of Atticus.

Calder: Solo Haina

Stay Forever 2-1
Pembroke Palace 8-1
Banderia 3-1

Coolbythepool scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Banderia.
Ran 3rd.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $19.30 on the ex box ($38.60/$2).
...$1 exacta box top three.
Ran 1-3-7.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $56.80 on the tri box ($113.60/$2).

Banderia...3-2-0-0 on turf, only loss being a troubled trip. Nice second a couple of weeks ago off of a short freshening should do the trick.
Stay forever...Sat out almost two years then returned with a flourish this summer. 3-3 since comeback and might be this good.
Jennasietta...Possibly a touch classier than these and certainly likes the course -- but my, oh my, that post position is no bonus.
Coolbythepool.
Pembroke Palace.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Juv

Crackup 2-1
Excessive Barb 8-5
Hair Jordan 24-1

Wager: $5 WP on Excessive Barb.
Collected $6.50 on the WP (xxx, 2.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $13.40 on the ex box ($13.40/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $6.70 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $55.70 on the tri box ($111.40/$2).

Excessive Barb...The two-turns will be a question mark for most of these but this one won last time in a similar event at seven panels. Right back if able to negotiate the trip.
Crackup...Finished third behind top pick in last and was closing late to miss by a length as beaten fave.
Martinblestme...Baffert colt has shown some promise but faltered to fourth behind top two picks last time.
Hair Jordan.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Str Sprint

Giovannetti 8-1
Affairintheforest 7-1
Coconut Mango 9-1

La Bandera and Big Team Spirit scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Stoney.
Pulled up lame, vanned off.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-DNF.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-DNF.
...$1 tri box top four.
Scratched.

Stoney...Has put together a good 2002. Come in off of four straights wins including similar event in NoCal last time. Post won't help though.
Giovannetti...Trainer's had a pretty good meet from limited starts. Got a solid alw win against state-breds out of this one last time off the claim.
La Bandera...Hard-knocker is 11-5-2-0 lifetime and 4-2-1-0 over this course. Capable of being heard from.
Big Team Spirit.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Distance H'cp

Nicole's Pursuit 5-2
Shalini 9-1
Barely Daylight 10-1

Wager: $5 WP on Sunset Serenade.
Ran 6th.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $41.90 on the ex box ($83.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $318.20 on the tri box ($636.40/$2).

Sunset Serenade...Interesting race as virtually none of these have been the trip -- so we'll just go with the best looking PP's. 9-3-3-2 in 2002 and always in the hunt.
Barely Daylight...Off two months which is no bonus but put in a solid string of works last month. Should be rolling in the lane if ready.
Shalini...Another one that's untried at the trip but shows some good closing strength. Let's hope that translate to ten furlongs.
Nicole's Pursuit.
Ste. Pecheresse.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Sprint H'cp

Unlimited Value 6-1
Treasured Note 13-1
Con Quixote 7-1

Wager: $5 WP on Stormy Jack.
Ran 4th.
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 4-5-6-DNF.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 4-5-6-DNF.

Stormy Jack...4-2-2-0 at the trip. Should appreciate return to dirt.
El Dorado Shooter...Early last year he dominated NoCal sprints and looked to be a force to reckon with in that division. Laid off awhile and starts this winter were dull. But now makes third start of latest layoff and last two were OK seconds. Might get a line on this one by watching Stoney earlier on the card.
Rio Oro...Another making third start off of layoff and that foundation could turn the trick for this speedster.
Ride And Shine.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Distaff H'cp

Lil Sister Stitch 3-1
Party Pirate 25-1
Top Of Our Game 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Lil Sister Stitch.
Collected $32.50 on the WP (8.00, 5.00).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $120.20 on the ex box ($120.20/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $60.10 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $274.50 on the tri box ($549.00/$2).

Lil Sister Stitch...Won longer Cal Cup event last year but is capable sprinting as well.
Party Pirate...Not strong on the win end but usually in the hunt and might wake-up a little against state-breds.
Top Of Our Game...Making fourth start off of layoff and might be ready to roll today.
More Mascara.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Classic H'cp

Calkins Road 10-1
Continental Red 9-2
Slippery When Bet 25-1

Wager: $5 WP on Hot Market.
Ran 5th.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-7.

Hot Market...Not thrilled with the two+ month layoff -- but the trainer shows OK stats with comebackers and might be able to take these all the way if primed properly.
Continental Red...Last eight have all been graded tries against open company so this one might just prove best on a class edge.
Bonus Pay Day...Again, we'd much prefer to see some races since August but the works have been OK and this one usually gives a good account of self.
Grey Memo.

Santa Anita: Cal Cup Mile H'cp

Turkish Prize 8-1
Spinelessjellyfish 7-2
Adminniestrator 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Surprise Halo.
Ran 6th.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $39.60 on the exacta box ($79.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-6-7.

Surprise Halo...Going well this season including a close-up second two back in similar NoCal event.
Turkish Prize...Another having a very good year. Claimed last time and trainer shows good stats first off claim and in stakes.
Ninebanks...Won the similar NoCal event two back. Would probably rate higher here except for the poor post.
Spinelessjellyfish.
