Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

It has arrived. The Super Bowl of American racing. Three tracks covered below -- but the focus is clearly on Arlington and the eight Breeders Cup events. The wagering is a little heavier than usual because, with the ultra-competitive fields and huge pools, there is always the possibility of hitting a bona fide score on any given race. Therefore, BC Day is meant to swing for the fences -- win big, or go down in flames...The only damper on the afternoon is that the Chicago weather might be less than perfect. But that's just part of the game.

And so it goes...

All turf plays are turf only

Aqueduct: Sport Page H'cp

Saint Verre...If he can beat the rail horse to the punch he might take them all the way.
Bowman's Band...Put together a nice year with graded stakes placings, but they were two turners. However he has shown ability at this trip in the past.
Esteemed Friend...Quite a nice season for an 8YO. Likes this strip although not so much on the win-end of things.
Voodoo.

Wager: $5 WP on Saint Verre.
...$3 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri box top four.

Aqueduct: First Flight

Raging Fever...Last two were a little disappointing but have a feeling she'll improve with move to the Big A.
Shine Again...3-3 over the course. 3-3 at the trip. The one to beat.
Redhead Riot...Hard to fault since she woke up this summer.
Shiny Band.
Nonsuch Bay.

Wager: $5 W on Raging Fever.
...$3 exacta box top two, sub next if scratch.
...$2 tri key Raging Fever over next three, sub next if scratch.

Keeneland: Fayette

Tenpins...Nice score in Wash Pk H'cp off the bench last time. Connections bypassed BC Classic for this.
Crafty Shaw...Won a G3 at Turfway last time and strung a few together last fall.
Rock Slide.

Wager: $5 exacta box top two.

Arlington: Safely Kept H'cp

Gold Mover...Might be rounding back into peak form in third start since big Florida race where she conquered the almighty Xtra Heat.
Harmony Lodge...Probably had license to tire in stake last time which was second try in almost a year. Expect better today.
Victory At Sea.

Wager: $5 exacta Gold Mover over Harmony Lodge.
...$2 exacta Gold Mover over Victory At Sea.

Arlington: Black Tie Affair H'cp

Hero's Tribute...It will probably depend on how the track is playing early but it looks like the next two picks will provide some early speed and this guy might sit a good trip and get first jump on the rest.
Generous Rosi...Has shown an affinity for the track and strung together a couple of high Beyers last year at this time.
Balto Star...Speedy sort makes turf-to-dirt move and will try to lead them all the way.
Silver Zipper.

Wager: $5 WP on Hero's Tribute.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: BC Distaff

Summer Colony...The third last time might have been a blessing in disguise -- for bettors. Might offer some value of that loss. But that was around one-turn. She returns to a two-turn race here and can make amends with best effort.
Mandy's Gold...Gotta love the way this one has stepped up to the challenge of stretching out the last couple. She'll be rolling late and she has a win over the track this past spring.
Azeri...What can you say? Clearly the one to beat.
Take Charge Lady.

Wager: $5 WP on Summer Colony.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: BC Juv Fillies

Storm Flag Flying...Gorgeously bred Phipps filly has done nothing wrong so far. Best until beaten.
Composure...Baffert filly looked like the real deal winning Oak Leaf last out.
Santa Catarina...Another from Baffert. Was second to top pick in last -- but was eleven clear of the show horse.
Westerly Breeze.

Wager: $5 W on Storm Flag Flying.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: BC Mile

Beat Hollow...Clearly the Euros will be taking some money here. O'Brien's Rock Of Gibraltar and Landseer will get plenty of support. But don't forget this is a transplanted Euro -- he won a G1 over there and finished just behind Sakhee in the Epsom Derby in 2000. since coming stateside and moving in with Frankel he's been quite impressive including a win in the Arlington Million this summer. Horse that has never been higher than 8-5 in any US start will probably offer too much value to overlook.
Rock Of Gibraltar...Superstar 3YO is 5-5 this year. All G1's. The last two over older. could easily better this rating but you have to be willing to take the price in this excellent field.
Good Journey...Brings a four-race win streak into this dating back to last year. Obviously lightly raced but tuned up for this race with a good win last time in Atto Mile.
Aldebaran.

Wager: $5 WP on Beat Hollow.
...$5 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: Pick Six

$2 play...
Mile...Beat Hollow/Rock Of Gibraltar/Good Journey/Aldebaran
Sprint...Xtra Heat/Orientate/Carson Hollow/Swept Overboard
Filly/Mare Turf...Banks Hill
Juv...Kafwain/Wando
Turf...High Chaparral/ Denon/Ballingarry
Classic...Evening Attire

Arlington: BC Sprint

Xtra Heat...Amazingly, after reading the pundits the last couple of days, this exceptional filly could go overlooked once again. Probably not the 17-1 she was last year in this event -- but still a value. This race is always speed, speed and more speed and this one has shown the ability to go out, race fast, and keep going.
Orientate...Moved to the top of this division with an exceptional summer campaign. Certainly can't leave out but have to wonder if he'll be ready to go at this level with layoff since 9/1.
Carson Hollow...More of that nice BC Day value. Only blemish is that amazing photo finish to You in Saratoga's Test. 3YO fillies have often added value to this event: Very Subtle, Meafara, Safely Kept, and, of course, Xtra Heat.
Swept Overboard.

Wager: $5 WP on Xtra Heat.
...$4 WPS on Carson Hollow.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box top three.
...$2 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: BC Filly & Mare turf

Banks Hill...Possibly the best bet of the day. She was being touted as the lock of the BC card prior to her defeat at Santa Anita. But that was after an aborted entry in NY, canceled by wet weather, and then another flight to the west coast. Add that to traffic problems and it just wasn't her day. But look two back to nice second behind Rock Of Gibraltar and overwhelming win in this event last year. It will be interesting to see how the last affects her odds.
Golden Apples...Beat top pick in last and won the Bev D over this course prior to that. Hard to find fault with her form.
Islington...Moves back in with own sex after a decent fifth last time in the Arc.
Turtle Bow.

Wager: $5 WP on Banks Hill.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: BC Juv

Kafwain...This could be the most unpredictable event of the afternoon but the way this Baffert 2YO won last indicates he might be ready to improve with the stretch out.
Wando...Only blemish in four starts is a photo loss in G2 stake grass try. Won the Grey last time -- the same race Macho Uno came out of to win this event a couple of years ago. Outside post is no bonus however.
Van Nistelrooy...$6+ mil yearling purchase was the talk of the town in Ireland this summer -- until getting beaten in last two. Traffic troubles in last however. Looking to redeem reputation.
Whywhywhy.

Wager: $5 WP on Kafwain.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: BC Turf

High Chaparral...Won the Epsom and Irish derbies then sat out and missed a prep leading into a decent third in the Arc. Any improvement off of that race will make him tough to beat.
Denon...Toss out his Santa Anita starts and he's had quite a career since arriving stateside.
Ballingarry...Finished behind top choice in June. Is making third start off of layoff and last was a doozy, winning Canadian International in fine fashion. Would rate him higher except there's question marks of moving into new barn since last and getting new jock.
With Anticipation.

Wager: $5 WP on High Chaparrel.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: BC Classic

Evening Attire...Yeah, it's not often you'll put an Aqueduct inner track winner on top in the BC Classic but this guy is just too good to ignore. He comes in off two superior efforts at the trip. That's more than can be said for the rest -- particularly those coming in off unusually long layoffs. There should be plenty of speed to shoot at and this one looks capable of getting it done. Question mark is jock trying to get a big BC win.
Hawk Wing...Euro has a 9-4-5-0 record and could prove special if able to take to dirt.
Milwaukee Brew...The whole play in this race really depends on the 3YO speed backing up late -- if so this one certainly is capable of grabbing a share.
Medaglia D'Oro.

Wager: $5 WP on Evening Attire.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Arlington: Steinlen

Capsized...Seems to have reawakened with summer campaign. Can makes amends for near miss last time with a race over the course in tow.
February Storm...Going well lately.
Al's Dearly Bred...Edged top pick last time but post position reversal should make a difference in that result.
Purplest.

Wager: $5 WP on Capsized.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.
