Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

The day got off to a good start and then fizzled disappointingly. Three winners in ten tries overall (Belmont, $7.60, 2.40; Calder, 3.00). Revved up early tabbing cold exactas ($22.60/$2, $6.10/$2) in the first two NY Showcase Day races at Belmont. Frustratingly we also just missed collecting on tri's in both races with one of ours running fourth. We did manage to get our top three to combine for the exacta ($46.60/$2) and tri ($91.50/$2) in the next event on the Belmont card... But from there things took a turn for the dull. Managed to pick up a few more piddly saver wagers. Overall it just turned out to be a lackluster performance.

Wagered: $368.00
Collected: $186.05.

All turf plays are turf only

Belmont: Maid of the Mist

RESULTS
Beautiful America 5-2
Combanchera 9-5
Shesasmokin 7-2

Wager: $5 WP on Beautiful America.
Collected $27.50 on the WP (7.60, 3.40).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $45.20 on the ex box ($22.60/$2).
...$2 tri box top three.
Ran 1/2-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6

Beautiful America...Already has a stakes win in the holster. Only loss was a decent third in F'lakes stake against males.
Combanchera...Pletcher filly broke maiden like she's going to be a good one. Could better this rating, experience is the only question mark.
Blink Twice...Another from Pletcher. Also looked good breaking maiden first-time out but has been off since that effort on 7/21.
Doc's Doll.

Belmont: Sleepy Hollow

Funny Cide 1-5
Spite the Devil 8-1
Go Rockin Robin 38-1

Wager: $5 tri key Funny Cide over next two.
Ran 1/2-5.
...$2 tri key Funny Cide over next three.
Ran 1/2-4-5.
...If scratches cancel tri wagering: $5 exacta Funny Cide over Spite The Devil/sub next if scratch.

Funny Cide...Wow. The way he won his first two -- including a state-bred stake last time -- indicates this one is probably suited for open company. Should boss these NY-breds.
Spite The Devil...Second to top pick in last. Threw in some decent efforts in open stakes prior.
JB Hood...Looks to have some potential.
Gallant Soldier.

Belmont: Iroquois

Dat You Miz Blue 2-1
Princess Dixie 6-1
Maddie May 8-5

Wager: $5 WP on Maddie May.
Ran 3rd.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$2 exacta Maddie May over next three.
Ran 3/1-2-5.
...$1 exacta top four.
Collected $23.30 on the ex box ($46.60/$2).
...$1 tri Maddie May over next three.
Ran 3/1-2-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $45.75 on the tri box ($91.50/$2).

Maddie May...Won this race last year and is coming into it better this season. Won NY-bred stake last time and was second to Imperial Gesture prior.
Dat You Miz Blue...Seldom seen in restricted company -- although last time she did she was behind the top choice. Makes turf-to-dirt move and will find this group easier than those she's faced recently.
Princess Dixie...Bond 3YO has missed board only once in ten tries. Coming off of two stakes wins at F'Lakes. This will be tougher but this one seems to be improving.
We'll See Ya.

Belmont: Hudson

Well Fancied 6-5
Tom's Thunder 7-1
Vodka 10-1

Le Bourget scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Le Bourget.
Scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-5.

Le Bourget...Very lightly raced and might offer some value here. Should like the return to 6F as well as opportunity to once again face state-breds.
Impeachthepro...Likes the track and the trip. Should also offer some value here due to poor performance last time. Won this race last year.
Say Florida Sandy...Seems to be slumping but it's hard to leave this money-leading NY'er out of the mix.
Tom's Thunder.

Belmont: Ticonderoga

Rhum 6-1
Shopping For Love 1-1
Dynamic Lisa 47-1

Wager: $5 WP on Wake Up Kiss.
Ran 4th at 7-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $17.90 on the ex box ($35.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Wake Up Kiss...Bond runner is undefeated on turf -- although those three races were all last year. Only one start in 2002 so fitness is a question, But trainer rates high in all pertinent categories.
Eventail...Bond's main man Prado sticks here so you have to think that top jock likes his chances. Just nipped in this race last year.
Rhum...Didn't do much when allowed to face restricted state-breds last year but seems improved this year and has been going too well in open stakes to think she'll have a problem here.
Shopping For Love.

Belmont: Mohawk H'cp

Quiet Ruler 45-1
Whitmore's Conn 2-1
Chasin Wimmin 18-1

Finality, Statement scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on I'm All Yours.
Ran 7th at 3-1.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 7-9.
...$2 exacta box top three.
Ran 7-9.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 7-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
No wager after scratches.

I'm All Yours...Seems to like the Belmont grass. Won similar event here on 9/21.
Celtic Sky...Has been right there in the mix with this bunch the last few.
Finality...Pletcher runner won G2 event last time beating Union Place. That one went on to win Calder stake last week. Tough customer but slight question as 3YO faces older stakes runners here. Would not be a surprise however.
Statement.

Belmont: Empire Classic H'cp

Gander 4-5
Compelling World 8-1
Lord Ofthe thunder 40-1

Trial Prep scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Trial Prep.
Scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-6.

Trial Prep...Lightly raced 3YO has compiled a strong 7-4-2-1 record. Off since Saratoga but trainer is OK off the layoff and is having a strong meet all around.
Sherpa Guide...Brought a three race win streak into the G1 Woodward. Over matched there but likely to rebound against NY-breds.
Gander...Has put together a nice career in mostly open company. Was pointing to Meadowlands stake a couple of weeks ago but stall mishap caused a scratch. Should go well against state-breds.
Thebigapple.

Keeneland: Valley View

Bedanken 2-1
Mariensky 2-1
High Maintenance 10-1

Wager: $5 WP on Mariensky.
Collected $8.50 on the WP (xxx, 3.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-8-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-8-9.

Mariensky...Let's give Clement filly one more try. Traffic troubles in two US starts so might offer a little value with a clean trip.
High Maintenance...Mott filly comes into this having gone 5-4-1-0 since April. Tested here in first graded try.
August Storm...Front running type might prove interesting here coming out of a grass sprint last time. If unchallenged early she might surprise -- or at least hang on for a share.
Guana.

Calder: Flying Pidgeon

Band Is Passing 1-2
Link to Jimmy 5-1
Marquette 13-1

Doowaley scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Band Is Passing.
Collected $13.00 on the WP (3.00, 2.20).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $4.90 on the ex box ($9.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-9.

Band Is Passing...Has put together a nice career mostly staying in Florida for these types of events. Won in Sept. off a long layoff and see no reason why a repeat isn't likely.
Doowaley...Third to top pick two back. Kind of unlucky that two of four starts since arriving from Europe have been moved to dirt. Probably prefers this surface.
Profit Option...Been off awhile since looking a little stale in last two starts. Trainer does well off the layoff and graded stakes winner certainly likes the course.
Link To Jimmy.

Santa Anita: Sunny Slope

Only the Best 4-1
Domestic Dispute 7-1
Roll Hennessey Roll 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Spensive.
Ran 4th at 5-2.
...$10 quinella top two.
Ran 4-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-6.

Spensive...Baffert runner is improving and should go well.
Red Apache...Headed top pick last time. The one to beat.
Roll Hennessey Roll...Undefeated colt is the enigma here, having won all three starts out of town. Way out of town.
Only The Best.
