Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Sometimes things just get on a roll and we've now put three very strong weeks together.

Again, we weren't completely on target on the win end, but our two on top out of six (Calder, $6.00; Arlington, $13.60) did provide a positive ROI on the win side for the afternoon. Overall on the win side over the past three weeks, we've played thirty-one races, a $2 W wager on each would have cost $62, our eleven winners have returned a total of $84.50.

Total wagering for each of the past three weeks and payoffs returned:

9/14...Wagered, $464.00...Collected, $546.90
9/21...Wagered $518.00...Collected, $955.60
9/28...Wagered $254.00...Collected, $400.00

Clearly things are going our way. This Saturday we managed to collect something on every race except the inexplicable Arlington-Washington Lassie -- won by a 60-1 maiden. Otherwise we tabbed cold exactas at Calder ($39.60/$2) and Arlington (Futurity, $39.40/$2). Our second and third picks combined for three more exactas (Belmont, $61.50/$2, $74.50/$2; Meadowlands, $51.60/$2). We also snagged a couple of nice tri boxes (Arlington, $195.80/$2; Meadowlands, $125.80/$2). The Meadowlands triple consisted of our top three picks. We also missed a couple more tri's running a frustrating 1-2-4 (Belmont, Calder).

Overall it was just another gratifying day at the races...

Belmont: Flower Bowl

RESULTS
Kazzia 3-1
Turtle Bow 9-1
Mot Juste 18-1

Banks Hill scratched.

Wager: $4 exacta box top two, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-6.
...$5 WP on England's Legend if Banks Hill scratches.
Ran 6th.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $30.75 on the ex box ($61.50/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Banks Hill...Euro invader came over last year to take the BC F/M Turf event at this distance and on this course. won that one with ease and looks best today -- but frankly, is probably unlikely to start given the weather. Clearly the one to beat though if enters the gate.
England's Legend...Just missed in this event last year. Will try to take them wire-to-wire and has handled the distance before, as well as less than firm turf. Faltered at the end last time in Bev D but should go better today making third start of season.
Kazzia...Dominant Brit 3YO filly. Went OK last time in only loss of her career when fourth against elders. Expect better today. Adds lasix.
Turtle Bow.
Starine.

Belmont: Jockey Club Gold Cup

Evening Attire 9-1
Lido Palace 3-1
Harlan's Holiday 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Milwaukee Brew.
Ran 6th at 9-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-6
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $32.25 on the ex box ($74.50/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-2-6-7.

Milwaukee Brew...Doesn't seems to be his preferred distance but clearly he'll be rolling late and a factor if he likes the Belmont mud.
Lido Palace...It could be a Frankel exacta. Likes the track and the trip.
Evening Attire...It's starting to look like those Aqueduct stakes wins weren't a winter fluke.
Repent.
Abreeze.

Belmont $500K Pick Four

Wager: $1 Pick 4
R7/Durimente/Toddler
R8/Banks Hill/England's Legend/Kazzia...Add Surya if moved to dirt
R9/Milwaukee Brew/Lido Palace
R10/Top Shoter/Peggys Mukora

Ran 4-5/1-6/2-6/3-4.

Calder: Noble Royalty H'cp

Stay Forever 2-1
Pembroke Palace 8-1
Abuela Esther 27-1

Castlebrook, Coolbythepool scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Stay Forever.
Collected $23.50 on the WP ($6.00, 3.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Doh! We actually scratched into winning this ($39.60/$2) but didn't add the "sub if scratch" line.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $19.80 on the ex box ($39.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-2-4 -- by a nose! Doh!

Stay Forever...Has racked up two straight since coming off a long, long layoff. Looks capable of continuing streak in stakes company.
Coolbythepool...Could be entered in case of surface switch and will certainly be the one to beat on dirt -- but might prove useful on green as well.
Castlebrook...Another without much turf experience but plenty of stakes races on resume. Will be in the hunt.
Pembroke Palace.
Sara's Success.

Arlington: Arlington-Washington Lassie

Moonlight Sonata 60-1
Parting 14-1
Souris 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Souris.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-7.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 3-6-7-8.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 3-6-7-8.

Souris...Asmussen runner made easy transition from MSW to stakes winner and that experience should help.
Ashraaf...Stable had similar pattern with some of their juveniles last year: Not so hot in SoCal, much better when moved east. This included the BC Juv Filly winner, so this lady is one to watch out for today.
Explosive Beauty...Trainer's hitting at a 30% rate this year and can only help this improving youngster.
Wildcat Annie.

Arlington: Arlington-Washington Futurity

Most Feared 5-1
Anasheed/entrymate of Sharp Impact 3-2
Unleash The Power 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Most Feared.
Collected $48.00 on the WP ($13.60, 5.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $39.40 on the ex box ($39.40/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $19.70 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $97.90 on the tri box ($195.80/$2).

Most Feared...Just a feeling that this one is on the improve and might be capable of a little Beyer jump which could be enough here.
Sharp Impact...2-2 so far including a nice stake win last time.
Echeverria...Baffert colt has been doing well in Kentucky. The slight fade last time at a shorter trip is a concern.
Unleash the Power.

Meadowlands: Escaped H'cp

Brucker's Brother 6-1
Horrible Evening 1-1
Beknown To Me 5-2

Pounding scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Pounding.
Scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $25.80 on the ex box ($51.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $62.90 on the tri box ($125.80/$2).

Pounding...Tepid vote here because of trainer's lackluster stats of the layoff. But was going well all summer and seems capable of sitting a close-up stalking trip. And shows good stuff on wet tracks.
Beknown To Me...Really gets the nod for this spot solely on basis of last two which might indicate improvement over earlier form.
Brucker's Brother...Wired the field this track and trip two back and some of these were in behind.
Horrible Evening.
