Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Although we weren't as solid on the win end this was probably the best week in recent memory. Three winners on top in fourteen races. But, oh the gimmicks...

Our top two picks made up two exactas (Belmont/$12.00, $10.00). Three more exactas came from among our top three picks: Calder/$49.20 (didn't play that one in the Brave Raj, but we made up for it by getting the tri), Kentucky Downs/$218.20, Turfway/$47.40. And we had some nice tri hits in our wagering mix on Saturday: Calder/$130.60, Kentucky Downs/$173.80, Turfway/$300.60. And finally it's worth noting that although they weren't among our wagering menu our top four picks combined for the super in those same three events: Calder/$286.00, Kentucky Downs/$444.00, Turfway/$966.00.

Clearly a fine afternoon. Totalled up it looks like this:

Wagered: $518.00. Collected: $955.85.

All turf plays are turf only

Belmont: Ashley Cole H'cp

I'm All Yours 9-5
Haggs Castle 9-1
Celtic Sky 5-2

Wager: $5 W on Celtic Sky.
Ran 3rd.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-6.
...$1 tri box top three.
Ran 1-3-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-6-8.

Celtic Sky...We've said it before, we'll say it again, when a similar bunch lines up in a similar event the outcome is often the same. This one won a similar event at the Spa last time and a similar event at Belmont three back.
Reluctant Groom...And this one was second in both of those races.
I'm All Yours...Fourth behind the top two last time and was the beaten fave that day. Probably will take some wise-guy money -- but again, the more things change the more they stay the same...
Quiet Ruler.

Belmont: Noble Damsel H'cp

Tates Creek 4-5
Amonita 5-2
Dat You Miz Blue 7-1

Wager: $5 W on Tates Creek.
Collected $9.75 on the W ($3.90).
...$3 exacta box top two.
Collected $18.00 on the ex box ($12.00/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $6.00 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Tates Creek...Hadn't missed an exacta finish eight tries before coming up short in G1 at Arlington. Cuts back to a distance that should allow for atonement.
Amonita...G1 winner in France made a winning US debut last time for Clement. That was first start in almost a year might go better with that one under belt.
Watch...3-5 at the trip and looks in good form off of two Spa races.
Coney Kitty.

Belmont: Vosburgh

Bonapaw 3-2
Aldebaran 3-2
Voodoo 9-2

Wager: $5 W on Aldebaran.
Ran 2nd.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Collected $25.00 on the ex box ($10.00/$2).
...$1 tri key Aldebaran over next three.
Ran 2/1-3-5.

Aldebaran...Bridesmaid specialists record raises some questions marks about the will to win but Frankel runner looks to perhaps have an edge at the trip.
Bonapaw...Would rate top billing at six panels but the extra furlong leaves room for doubt. However, won at a mile two back and just might be this good.
Wild Summer...Certainly seemed to take to Saratoga. Will be competitive if able to carry form back downstate.

Calder: Brave Raj

Ivanavinalot 4-5
Dakota Light 26-1
Puxa Saco 2-1
Heavenly Miss 5-1

Wager: $5 W on Ivanavinalot.
Collected $9.00 on the W ($3.60).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$2 tri key Ivanavinalot over next three.
Collected $130.60 on the tri key ($130.60/$2).
...$1 tri key top four.
Collected $65.30.

Ivanavinalot...Only blemish so far can be attributed to troubled start. Ran away and hid last time with a ten length stakes win.
Puxa Saco...2-2 so far including nice win last time despite poor break.
Dakota Light...Another that overcame trouble to win. Improved nicely in that one and any further improvement would be helpful.
Heavenly Miss.

Calder: Foolish Pleasure

Super Frolic 5-1
Trust N Luck 4-5
Unbridels King13-1

Wager: $5 WP on R Associate.
...$3 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box top three.
Ran 2-5-scratch.
...$1 tri box top three.
Ran 2-5-scratch.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-5-8-scratch.

R Associate...Came back from a brief summer vacation with new purpose and if this one ever gets a clean start watch out!
Global Peace...Narrowly beaten by top pick last time. That two-turn experience should help.
Trust N Luck...Could easily better this rating. Last start would have helped answer some distance questions but he lost rider when favored in stake at 4-5.
Sea Pleasure.

Louisiana Downs: Super Derby

Essence Of Dubai 5-2
Walk in the Snow 30-1
AP Five Hundred 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on The Judge Sez Who.
Ran 4th.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-4-5-6.
...$1 tri key The Judge Sez Who over next three.
Ran 4/3-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-5-6.

The Judge Sez Who...Has been doing very well on the B-circuit of 3YO stakes -- including a win last time in the Oklahoma Derby. Don't see any here that look any tougher than what he faced that day.
AP Five Hundred...Lightly raced horse looks to be improving and trainer has a knack for doing well in these type of rich but second-level events.
Private Emblem...Hasn't quite lived up to promise of Arkansas Derby but it's hard to ignore that only off the board finish was in the Kentucky Derby, so he's likely to do well.
Thunder Days.

Kentucky Downs: Kentucky Cup Turf Dash

Red Lightning 8-1
Aloha Bold 7-5
Mighty Beau 7-1

Wager: $5 WP on Supremo Secret.
Ran 6th.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Ran 6-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-5-6-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-5-6-7.

Supremo Secret...Has been doing well at shorter trips. The inside post should help.
Honor Me...Good looking dirt runner hasn't done as well in limited turf tries -- but certainly has the goods if takes to the course.
Diamant...Not too big on the win end but has done well on the left coast in some turf sprint and they is some pretty good competition out there in those events.
Aloha Bold.

Kentucky Downs: Kentucky Cup Ladies Turf

San Dare 10-1
Doubly Fun 53-1
Sluice 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Sluice.
Ran 3rd.
...$3 exacta box on top two.
Ran 3-10.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-9-10-scratch.

Sluice...Mott filly has yet to miss the exacta at the distance.
Four Plus Four...Shipped to So Cal to just miss in a minor stakes -- they must feel she's an improving sort and the win over the track is a plus.
Solvig...Return to Kentucky might wake her up.
Lotta Rhythm.

Kentucky Cup Mile

Jake the Flake 3-1
Glick 7-2
Pyrus 7-2
Royal Spy 9-5

Wager: $5 WP on Glick.
Collected $10.00 on the WP (xxx, $4.00).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $22.10 on the ex box ($44.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $86.90 on the tri box ($173.80/$2).

Glick...Mott trainee has always seemed on the verge of good things but has been very lightly raced last two years and in fact was running for a tag over last five -- but looks capable of competing with these However, race looks to have plenty of speed so we'd like to see patient handling that this one has shown ability to win with in the past.
Royal Spy...Another that might be best if able to go back to stalking style shown in wins last summer.
Pyrus...More speed. Will certainly appreciate return to grass.
Jake the Flake.

Kentucky Cup H'cp

Rochester 11-1
Nowrass 7-1
Continental Red 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Cetewayo.
Ran 4th.
...$2 exacta box top three.
Collected $218.20 on the ex box ($218.20/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $109.10 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Cetewayo...Perhaps a little overmatched last time but this crowd isn't as tough. 8YO is proven at the trip and can return to winning ways.
Nowrass...Has become something special with move to turf and can compete here.
Rochester...Sheppard turfer is 3-2-1-0 at the trip and can offer some value.
Red Mountain.

Turfway: Marfa

Mountain General 7-1
Sea Of Tranquility 8-5
Slider 7-2
Finder 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on Sea of Tranquility.
Collected $8.00 on the WP (xxx, $3.20).
...$2 exacta box top three.
Collected $47.40 on the ex box ($47.40/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $23.70 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $150.30 on the tri box ($300.60/$2).

Sea of Tranquility...Win here at the trip last time just reinforced the "horse-for-course" angle. Outside post isn't a bonus but long run to turn should allow time to find a spot.
Finder...Lukas' Day Trader did well last week with return to Bluegrass state.
Mountain General...Will be rolling late.

Meadowlands: Egret

August Storm 3-1
Dovetail 22-1
Storm Dancer 22-1

Wager: $5 WP on Libby's Halo.
Ran 8th.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-4-8-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-8-9.

Libby's Halo...Solid 5-2-2-1 record at the trip and on turf.
August Storm...Could appreciate the return to Jersey oval and cutback in distance. Check out that 10.12.01 race.
Tangier Sound...Very solid since moving to turf including win in similar event two back. Outside post hurts.
Melody Of Colors.

Meadowlands: Summit

Tarnished Lady 1-1
Cat Rocket 9-1
Whoop's Ah Daisy 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Tarnished Lady.
Collected $16.50 on the WP ($4.0, 2.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-7.

Tarnished Lady...Pletcher filly might be a little classier than these.
Short Note...Was going well with a couple of G3 placings this spring -- but not so hot this summer, however both of those efforts were troubled. Might be ready to return to good form after brief rest.
Whoop's Ah Daisy...Expecting some good stuff stretching out off of last couple of sprints.
