Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow

Turf selections/wagers are turf only

Best Bets

Churchill: Race 3, Heart Union... Off turf.
Churchill: Race 11, Noble's Promise... Ran 5th at 24-1.
Churchill: Race 11, Awesome Act... Ran 19th at 11-1.

Noble's Promise...Absolutely solid 2YO season - although all on synthetics or turf. However, fired a lifetime best Beyer in dirt/3YO debut. Faltered in the next start, the G1 Arkansas Derby -- but that was a troubled trip. Working well at CD and a rebound in this third start of the season is not out of the question. Breeding is perhaps suspect at the distance -- but we'll give him this shot before deciding that. We have to hope the jock can get him to settle early and not be too close to the expected hot-pace. If so, he might be the one to make the first run.
Awesome Act...Similar scenario to top pick. He showed some ability as a 2YO - on turf and synthetics. Fired a big one in his 3YO/dirt debut. Regressed somewhat in the troubled follow-up -- and could well move forward off of that.
Lookin At Lucky...Lifetime best Beyer in his one dirt try. Hard to discount with the 8-6-1-1 record and the excellent workout reports at CD leading up to this.
Mission Impazible...also reported to be doing very well at Churchill.
Ice Box...That big closing kick could prove useful in this race.

Wager: $5 WP on Noble's Promise.
Wager: $2 WP on Awesome Act/Mission Impazible.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top five.
...$1 tri box top five.

Churchill: Eight Belles G3 $100K

RESULTS: x-D-A... [xxx, xxx, 2.20]

Hot Dixie Chick...A top 2YO filly into late summer last year made a winning return at Oaklawn in March. Needs to step it up off of that but should go well in second start of the year.
Decelerator...Lukas trainee comes in off of a nice season in Arkansas.
Sister Resistor...A couple of duds recently but showed promise earlier. Rebound not out of the question in first start for Dutrow.

Wager: $5 exacta box top two.
...$2 tri key Hot Dixie Chick over next three.

Churchill: Distaff Turf Mile G2 $200K

Fantasia...Good looking effort in first US start and should build off of that.
Tizaqueena...Two nice winning, improving efforts in minor stakes at FG coming into this.
Diamondrella...Last few have been a little bit disappointing but she fits if able to rebound to best form.

Wager: $5 WP on Fantasia.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Churchill: Humana Distaff G1 $300K

RESULTS: A-x-B... [19.20, 8.80, 5.60]

Mona de Momma...Hard to argue that SoCal shippers have had an impact this year.
Informed Decision...Defending champ in this race -- and the defending BC F/M Sprint champ -- fizzled a little bit in seasonal debut.
Warbling...Huge win in a G2 last time signals that this lightly-raced 4YO might be any kind.
Free Flying Soul.

Wager: $5 WP on Mona de Momma.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Churchill: Churchill Downs G2 $250K

Ventana...Another SoCal shipper. Eeked out a gritty G2 win last time. A Beyer jump moving synth-to-dirt is not out of the question.
Musket Man...Just missed in a solid try last time in the G1 Carter Hcp. Now making third start of 2010.
Munnings...Overall has to be rated a little bit inconsistent -- but he's clearly capable on his best.
Warrior's Reward.

Wager: $5 WP on Ventana.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Churchill: Turf Classic G1 $500K

RESULTS: D-A-C... [xxx, 4.40, 3.20]... ex $74.00/$2... tri $347.80/$2

Court Vision...Has not been a win-machine since his 3YO year but looks best here. Ran third in this race last year.
Blues Street...Pletcher barn has been hot this spring. This one brings in a four-race win-streak.
Loup Breton...Toss the synthetic experiment last time and this one fits.
General Quarters.

Wager: $5 WP on Court Vision.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Belmont: Beaugay G3 $100K

RESULTS: C-B-x... ex $34.40/$2

My Princess Jess...Question is: Will she need one off of the layoff? But, she won this race off of a layoff last year.
Scolara...Seems to be rounding into form.
Dynaslew...Matched a lifetime best Beyer in her 4YO debut and could move forward from there.
Miss World.

Wager: $5 WP on My Princess Jess.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Belmont: Fort Marcy G3 $100K

RESULTS: D-A-C... [xxx, 5.30, 3.90]... ex $39.60/$2... tri $222.00/$2

Dynamoor...clearly needs to step it up to compete in here but is very lightly-raced and should have that upside potential.
Operation Red Dawn...Third in this race last year.
Brother Nick...Might be difficult to run down if able to shake clear.

Wager: $5 WP on Dynamoor.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Pimlico: Tesio $70K

RESULTS: A-C-x... [3.60, 2.60, 2.20]... ex $9.00/$2

Bank the Eight...Has faced the likes of Eskendereya and Rule. Seems to be an improving 3YO.
Noah's Dream...Better than last time.
Regal Warrior.

Wager: $1 exacta box top three.
...$5 exacta key Bank the Eight over the next two.

Hollywood: Wilshire Hcp G3 $100K

RESULTS: x-A-x... [xxx, 3.20, 2.60]

Cat By The Tale...Should be set for this off of Santa Anita stakes tries.
Czechers...Stretching out and getting a jock switch -- although the rider change is not necessarily a plus.
Princess Haya...Capable on best.
Sweeter Still.

Wager: $5 WP on Cat By The Tale.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.
