2008 Racing Season

Saratoga Race Course Sunday, August 31, 2008 Total for the meet... $727.75

We start the 2008 Saratoga thoroughbred race meet with a mythical bankroll of $1000. Each day we'll use this space to record our mythical best bets and calculate the accumulated wins and losses.

Yesterday...

Sautrday kind of took the wind out of our sails and made us wonder if it's just not to be. We were all around it yesterday and could have had the day of the meet -- but we couldn't break through in some frustrating finishes. Even our winner was a disappoint as the owrd was out on Hello Broadway. We were expecting perhaps 5-1, but he opened in the 9-5 range and eventually won at 2-1.

But the nightcap was the kicker. Sheppard Specials have been good to the bankroll over the years and it looked like another would propel to a good place. 13-1 Come Close got into gear in the final half-furlong and made a late charge that looked to be a winner -- but just couldn't get up in the photo, finishing third by a nse and a head. Worse, we ran 2-3 in the photo for a nice exacta that we would have had 1.5X.

Oy.
