Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow

It was a fun afternoon. Our Best Bets showed a solid positive ROI [after two or three weeks of frustrating 'break-evens', which featured early wins that put us in good positions -- but we just couldn't close the deal...].

And it was a clean-sweep with our top picks in the coast-to-coast plays. The highlight was the feature at Fair Grounds where we called the cold tri [$215.00/$2], which, obviously, also meant the cold exacta [$51.40/$2].

Fun day.

Calder, Race 8, exacta box, Santuri/Starship Victory/Skip the Bid.
WON [$8.40/$2]. Skip the Bid scratched.

Tampa, Race 4, Whisperer.
Ran 2nd at 4-1.

Tampa, Race 6, Royale.

Based on a $2-base wager [$2 WIN, or $2 exotic multiple]:
Wagered: $4 + $4 + $2 + $2 + $2 = $10
Collected: $30.40
ROI: 204%

Aqueduct: Gravesend Hcp G3 $100K

Fabulous Strike 1-2
True Quality 9-2
Good Card 11-1

Songster, Cavallo Pazzo scratched.

Fabulous Strike...Drops 10 pounds off of convincing score in the Fall highweight Hcp.
Songster...Should benefit from the first start back --although he's been scratched since, which might be a concern.
Lucky Island...Better than his last two and we're looking for a rebound off of the layoff.
Cavallo Pazzo.

Wager: $5 W on Fabulous Strike.
Collected $7.75 on the W [3.10].
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-4-scr-scr.
...$1 tri box top four.

Laurel: Md Juvie Champs $50K

Peace Town 3-5
In the Juice 4-1
Royal Stare 8-1

The Prince, Eye on Versailles scratched.

The Prince...Could prove interesting on the stretchout.
Eyes On Versailles...Stretched to two turns last time and carried his speed all the way. Dangerous again.
Peace Town...A tough call. The 93 Beyer last time makes him an "include" -- but the number is so out of whack it's hard to know if it's for real.
Royal Stare.

Wager: $5 WP on The Prince.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-scr-scr.
...$1 tri box top four.

Tampa: Inaugural $65K

Top Seed 4-5
General Quarters 7-1
Miles and Miles 9-2

Sir Edgar scratched.

Top Seed...Will have his work cut out leaving from the outside post -- but has looked good in first two and showed nice improvement last time when switched to dirt.
General Quarters...Repeat of the alw try in Nov at Churchill puts him in the mix here.
Sir Edgar...Like Peace Town in the Laurel race above, it's hard to know what to make of that last Beyer. If the lightbulb clicked and he's a new horse, he'll be tough -- but we won't know until after the race...

Wager: $5 WP on Top Seed.
Collected $16.50 on the WP [3.80, 2.80].
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $21.40 on the ex box [$21.40/$2].
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $10.70 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7.

Fair Grounds: Furl Sail Hcp $60K

Stormy West 3-1
Shytoe Lafeet 5-1
Nans Joy 9-2

Stormy West...Won an off-the-turfer here last time -- but seems to prefer the grass. Slight nod in a competitive field.
Shytoe Lafeet...Has rarely missed picking up a piece this season. Won in prep for this.
Nans Joy...Euro-import had poor start in US debut. Expect better.
You Dancing Devil.

Wager: $5 WP on Stormy West.
Collected $34.50 on the WP [8.60, 5.20].
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $51.40 on the ex box [$51.40/$2].
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $25.70 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $107.50 on the tri box [$215.00/$2].

Santa Anita: Cal Breeders' Champion $125K

Saucey Evening 1-1
Spanish Ice 22-1
Ten Churros 5-2

Saucey Evening...Comes out of a good fourth in BC Juvie Turf. Won a stake on this surface just prior.
Chalula One...Good looking debut win. Could be any kind.
Ten Churros...Looks like the one to catch.

Wager: $5 WP on Saucey Evening.
Collected $17.50 on the WP [4.00, 3.00].
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-6.

Santa Anita: La Brea G1 $250K

Indian Blessing 3-5
Ginger Pop 47-1
Bsharpsonata 3-1

Country Star scratched.

Indian Blessing...Ran second as 9-5 fave in BC F/M Sprint and trainer Baffert thinks she prefers dirt to synthetics -- but she's working well here and a win will help her Eclipse credentials.
Country Star...Came into the season with the promise of being one of the stars of the division -- but faltered somewhat in the regard. Off since Saratoga and working well for Frankel. Expect a good try.
Indyanne...Very talented sprinter. Based in NoCal but has traveled successfully. Took on the boys last time and ran a good second.

Wager: $5 WP on Indian Blessing.
Collected $14.50 on the WP [3.20, 2.60].
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-DNF-scr.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-DNF-scr.
