Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow

Preakness Day and even if you're taking a wagering shot against Big Brown a win by the Preakness favorite is something we can all root for as racing fans in order to set-up another shot at a Triple Crown and a potential showdown with Casino Drive in three weeks at Belmont.

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets

Belmont, Race 9, exacta box, Rite Moment/Carriage Trail.
Pimlico, Race 6, exacta box, Roshani/Stormy West.
Pimlico, Race 10, Stay Close.
Pimlico, Race 13, Basha's Moon.

Belmont: Shuvee Hcp G2 $150K

Rite Moment...Super-solid since arriving in NY.
Carriage Trail...Lightly-raced 5YO hit a career peak in latest -- only her third start back from a long layoff.
Wow Me Free...Last indicates she might be an improved 4YO.
Cowgirls Don't Cry.

Wager: $5 W on Rite Moment.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri key Rite Moment over next three.

Pimlico: Md Sprint Hcp G3 $100K

Starforaday...Ran a lifetime best Beyer in her 2008 debut. Peak form right now.
Suave Jazz...Hard-knocker hasn't missed an exacta in a long time.
Cognac Kisses...Another that is typically in the hunt.
Celtic Innis.

Wager: $5 WP on Starforaday.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri key Starforaday over next three.

Pimlico: Gallorette Hcp G3 $100K

Roshani...Very solid turfer from Pletcher. Third start of 2008.
Stormy West...Look for Mott filly to be running late.
Valbenny...Had a solid 3YO season in SoCal. Now in Michael Matz barn -- but might need one off of the layoff.
Lady Digby.

Wager: $5 WP on Roshani.
...$5 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri key Roshani over next three.

Pimlico: Barbaro $100K

Spurrier...Never in it in the G1 Wood. We'll toss that one and look for a rebound to the nice improving form shown prior.
Roman Emperor...Similar -- tossed in a clunker in the Wood but likely better than that performance.
Da'Tara...Six starts on his resume and he might still be improving.
Wesley.

Wager: $5 W on Spurrier.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri key Spurrier over next three.

Pimlico: Turf Sprint $100K

Hesa Big Star...Good comeback effort in 2008 debut. Should be able to stalk from just off the hot pace.
Heroes Reward...Calder stakes start three weeks ago should have him primed for today.
True to Tradition...Third start back and improved start 1 to start 2 this year.
Pete's Wonder.

Wager: $5 WP on Hesa Big Star.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Pimlico: Hirsch Jacobs G3 $100K

Lantana Mob...Stakes winner at 2 and Oaklawn win might indicate he's even better at 3.
Force Freeze...Just behind top pick two back and followed-up with a good alw win at Lone Star.
Commandeered...Like Lantana Mob this one's 2008 debut could signal he's improved this year.
Silver Edition.

Wager: $5 WP on Lantana Mob.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Pimlico: Dixie G2 $250K

Stay Close...Won a small stake here about three weeks ago -- looks like he's in career form right now.
Salinja...Been in the hunt more often than not since early last year.
Shakis...Will be tough if able to recapture best form -- but 2008 debut leaves us wanting to see if that will happen.
Distorted Reality.

Wager: $5 WP on Stay Close.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Pimlico: Distaff G2 $150K

Bear Now...Woodbine sprint should prove to be a nice little tightener for this.
Buy the Barrel...Perhaps turned a new corner with the win at Oaklawn.
Wow Me Free...Could be an improved 4YO. Cross-entered at Belmont.
Altesse.
Runway Rosie.

Wager: $5 WP on Bear Now.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.

Pimlico: Preakness G1 $1mil

Big Brown...Made the G1 Ky Derby field look like pretenders and this bunch looks a notch below those. Trainer hasn't sounded quite as confident and has been leery of the two-week turnaround -- and with the well-noted foot problems, perhaps there are some holes in this one if you want to take a shot against, but this one has to really go backwards and another has to really improve for an upset to happen.
Gayego...Take out the Derby and this one has a superb record -- and if you look back at Derby runners in the past you'll often see that first Saturday in May running line is easily their worst. Cross-country trip and back is a concern but looks second-best in this field.
Racecar Rhapsody...Third start of the season. Should be rolling late.
Yankee Bravo.

Wager: $5 WP on Big Brown.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.
