Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow

Wow -- whatta weekend of racing! We've got fourteen stakes on our plate, with many have Breeders' Cup implications. It should be fun.

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets

Belmont, Race 8, exacta box, Wait a While/Royal Highness.
Turfway, Race 9, Danzon.
Meadowlands, Race 8, Freakstein.
Meadowlands. Race 9, Rollers.

Belmont: Pilgrim $75K

The Leopard...By barn standards the Pletcher outfit has been a little bit cool lately so that adds to the concerns. Among the others -- putting this $2.5 mil purchase on turf so early. But, he has plenty of early foot and might dominate from the outset.
Rebounded...Decent looking debut then had trouble in follow-up. Look for better today.
Carry the Day.

Wager: $5 exacta The Leopard over Rebounded.
...$2 exacta Rebounded over The Leopard.
...$2 tri key The Leopard over next two.

Belmont: Flower Bowl Invy G1 $600K

Wait a While...Saratoga stakes win seems to indicate she's back on her game.
Royal Highness...Has been in the hunt every time since arriving in US.
My Typhoon...A little bit of a clunker last time with some trouble -- expect better today.

Wager: $5 WP on Wait a While.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Belmont: Kelso G2 $250K

Art Master...Tepid vote in a tough race -- but this one returns to scene of G3 Poker victory and is reunited with Gomez.
After Market...Has turned into a very nice stakes winner in SoCal. Likes Belmont -- but cutback to a mile is a concern.
Trippi's Storm...Another that is a question mark at the distance -- but can contend on best.

Wager: $5 WP on Art Master.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Turfway: Ky Cup Juv Fillies $100K

Sky Mom...The G2 at Saratoga was disappointing -- but we're hoping for a rebound to the good race in June at Churchill with perhaps a step forward while stretching to two turns.
Latest Scoop...Looked good breaking maiden and could fit here.
Kadira...Has only run one bad race and she had some trouble there. Added seasoning since and should go well.
Palanka City.

Wager: $5 WP on Sky Mom.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Turfway: Ky Cup Sprint G3 $100K

Piratesonthelake...Has show the ability in the past to stay close, stalk and pounce. That could be the winning strategy here.
Base Commander...Pletcher trainee is lightly-raced but has shown some flashes.
Shore...Seems to have returned as an improved 3YO. Don't ignore.
Fate Takes a Hand.

Wager: $5 WP on Piratesonthelake.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Turfway: Ky Cup Juvie G3 $100K

Blackberry Road...Head-scratcher of a pick. We like the nice, improving Beyers shown earlier this summer -- but flopped off the layoff on the synthetic surface last time. We'll note the trouble there -- and pressing the pace early, which was a change. Hope for a rebound here in second start back.
Texas Forever...Looks like he's getting the hang of it.
TJs Posse...Could be interesting with a couple of stakes tries already on his resume.

Wager: $5 WP on Blackberry Road.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Turfway: Ky Cup Distaff G3 $175K

Danzon...Think this Euro-transplant hasn't yet lived up to her potential. G1-placed against the boys she just might be better than these if she can transfer her turf form to the synthetic surface.
India...Should be forwardly-placed -- but not sure that's a plus on this track. See how it's playing early.
Kettleoneup...On the other hand, this gal should be rolling late.
Delicate Dynamite.

Wager: $5 WP on Danzon.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Turfway: Ky Cup Classic G2 $350K

Street Sense...Plenty of pundits looking for the upset -- maybe that will help the price a little.
Hard Spun...Speed in a short field and proven success over the surface. Dangerous.
Stream Cat.

Wager: $5 WP on Street Sense.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$2 exacta box Stream Cat with top two.

Hawthorne: Hawthorne Gold Cup G2 $500K

Jonesboro...Could have a pace edge and that might work over this strip.
AP Arrow...Second in this race last year. Off a couple of months but working well.
Student Council...Usually in the mix.
Extreme Supreme.

Wager: $5 WP on Jonesboro.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri Jonesboro over next three.
...$1 tri AP Arrow over other three.

Meadowlands: NATC Futurity/Fillies $200K

Freakstein...Expensive 2YO purchase lived up to price with debut win at Saratoga. Should fit with these.
New York City Girl...Already a stakes winner for Pletcher.
Reata's Quik Punch...Decent third in a rich stake last time.

Wager: $5 WP on Freakstein.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri key Freakstein over next three.

Meadowlands: NATC Futurity $200K

Rollers...NY-bred from Tagg/Lael showed all kinds of promise in debut.
Immortal Eyes...Still a maiden but has bumped into some tough competition.
Preachin Man...Battle-tested. Experience-edge might prove important.
Fed Watcher.

Wager: $5 WP on Rollers.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Santa Anita: Yellow Ribbon G1 $400K

Citronnade...Could be tough to catch if allowed an easy lead early.
Nashoba's Key...Hard to argue with the undefeated record.

Wager: $5 WP on Citronnade.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 tri box top three.

Santa Anita: Oak Leaf G1 $250K

Cry and Catch Me...Clearly the question mark is the trip. But Baffert filly looked good breaking maiden at 5.5F and has been working lights-out. If she can relax early she might run them off their feet late -- but relaxing early is a big "if".
Izarra...Nice closing punch in first two starts. Should be heard from in the lane.
Tasha's Miracle...Just shy of being undefeated. Won a G3 last time out and experience counts.
The Golden Noodle.

Wager: $5 WP on Cry and Catch Me.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Santa Anita: Goodwood Hcp G1 $500K

Lava Man...Is the heart winning out over the head? We love this horse -- and can't ignore the flop last time. Is he past his prime? We're betting that the Poly surface at Del Mar absolutely worked against his style. On the other hand this guy won the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup this summer over Cushion Track.
Lewis Michael...Seems to have shown an affinity for the synthetic surfaces -- although this one is somewhat different than what's he seen before.
Tiago...Another that ran very well on the Hollywood Cushion Track.
Big Booster.

Wager: $5 WP on Lava Man.
...$4 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.
