Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow

Four winners on top in thirteen races [Monmouth, $2.80; Philly, $2.80; Churchill, $3.20; Lone Star, $4.40]. And those win prices perfectly demonstrate that it was once again a low-value afternoon -- the kind that has plagued as for the past few weeks.

We had plenty of action -- cashing tickets in eight of twelve races [all our plays scratched out of one of the events]. We had three cold exactas -- but none reached double-digits. In one of those races our third pick completed the cold tri -- for a measly $17.60/$2. That's just the way the ball has been bouncing lately...

WAGERED: $382.00
COLLECTED: $284.40

Belmont: Mother Goose G1 $250K

Bushfire 3-1
Pine Island 5-1
Ready to Please 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Ready to Please.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-7.
...$1 tri key Ready to Please over next three.
Ran 3/1-4-7.
...$1 tri key Joint Effort over other three.
Ran 7/1-3-4.

Ready to Please...Improved notably as a 3YO and that improvement seems to be continuing with each start.
Joint Effort...Graded stakes winner looks like she's a the top of her game right now.
Lemons Forever...Upset G1 Ky Oaks with big closing move -- not sure that style will suit her best in this one-turn event.
Bushfire.

Belmont: Suburban Hcp G1 $400K

Invasor 6-5*
Wild Desert 7-2
Andromeda's Hero 19-1

Wager: $5 WP on Tap Day.
Ran 5th at 7-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$1 tri key Tap Day over next three.
Ran 5/1-2-3.
...$1 tri key Invasor over other three.
Collected $58.25 on the tri box ($116.50/$2).

Tap Day...Plenty of layoff lines and subsequently plenty of question marks -- but his best numbers last year are good enough to score here. He ran a good second in this race last year. The unknown is, of course, will he rebound to those top numbers?
Invasor...Looked convincing in G1 Pimlico Special. Just not quite convinced on this one yet.
Andromeda's Hero...Has shown flashes but made limited visits to winner's circle -- however, fired a lifetime best Beyer in last.
Wild Desert.

Monmouth: Jersey Shore BC G3 $150K

Henny Hughes 2-5*
Saint Daimon 9-1
He's Got Grit 2-1

Fabulous Strike, Keyed Entry scratched.

...$1 tri key Fabulous Strike over next three.
Scratched.
...$1 tri key Keyed Entry over other three.
Scratched.

Fabulous Strike...Met the two monsters of this 3YO sprint division last time and lead until late. Cutback to 6F should help.
Keyed Entry...Sprinting might be the future for this talented Pletcher runner that was obviously over-matched in the Derby.
Henny Hughes...Has yet to miss an exacta in six career starts. But we're still not quite sure how talented he really is. First start since last October so we'll know more about that today.
He's Got Grit.

Philly: Dr J Penny Memorial Hcp $100K

Pommes Frites 2-5*
Sabellina 3-1
Buck Trout's Niece 34-1

Ozone Bere scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Pommes Frites.

...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Pommes Frites...Always tough on the front end.
Ozone Bere.,,Dangerous. Third last time, seven behind top pick -- but the scenario simply wasn't set up for her. Expect much better today.
Sabellina...Should be able to stalk the early pace and make a run.
Marchonin.
Seek to Soar.

His Eyes 6-5*
Mr Pursuit 6-5
Almost Certain 6-1

...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected 9.00 on the WP (4.40, 2.20).
...$2 tri key His Eyes over next three.
Collected $17.60 on the tri box ($17.60/$2).

His Eyes...Just looks like he might have a pace advantage on these.
Mr Pursuit...Probably slightly over-matched in G3 LS Derby. Was going well prior to that.
Almost Certain...Ran a pretty good one last time off of a break and that might signal good things to come.
Cotton Lane.

Ran 1/2-4-5.

Kalyrra...Best win was clearly the grass win two back.
Aly's Vow...Also has done her best on grass.
Sweet Idea...Should find this spot to her liking.
Night Speeker.

Prairie Meadows: Iowa Distaff BC $125K

No Sleep 2-1

...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $14.40 on the ex box ($14.40/$2).
...$1 tri key Capeside Lady over next three.
Ran 2/1-3-5.

Capeside Lady...Ran big in the Oaklawn stake and then flopped in follow-up after some trouble. Look for a rebound.
No Sleep...Huge win in last might signal she's in peak form -- or it might have simply indicated that she really likes Monmouth.
Platinum Ballet...Decent efforts in graded company earlier this year would make you think she's classier than these -- except for the uninspired third in $50K stake prep for this.
Caviar Emptor.

Prairie Meadows: Iowa Sprint Hcp $125K

Coach Jimi Lee 3-1
Bishop Court Hill 4-5*
Brooker 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Semaphore Man.

Gouldings Green 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Master Command.

...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-6-10-13.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-6-10-13.

Master Command...Pletcher 4YO might prove interesting in her if he employs the front-running tactic again.
Alumni Hall...Has knocked heads with some of the best and last two show he's going well now.
Mayan King...Owner David Partridge Family Cassidy thought he had a Ky Derby hopeful last year with this guy. But he was laid up after G2 Lane's End flop. Three races so far this year though seem to indicate he's ready to live up to that early promise. Just not as battle-tested as some others in here.
Gouldings Green.

Cambiocorsa...Speedy. Leaves from the rail. Won when stretched to this trip in last.
Sweet Talker...2-2 since returning as a 4YO.
Dance in the Mood...Japanese invaders 5th to the very good Bullish Luck last time might signal that she's got a class edge on these.
