Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow

Simply one of the low-value days. Three winners on top in eleven races [Belmont, $3.20, 7.70; Pimlico. $2.60]. We managed to pick up a little something in nine of the eleven races -- but it wasn't nearly enough to put us over the top. We had some exactas -- including a couple of cold ones -- and some tri's in our mix, but it wasn't enough. On to next week...

WAGERED: $424.00
COLLECTED: $278.85

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets

Belmont, Race 6, Spanish Chestnut... 3rd at 7-2 (xxx, xxx, 2.80).
Belmont, Race 11, Bluegrass Cat... 2nd at 9-2 (xxx, 6.40, 4.70).
Belmont, Race 12, Mantle... 9th at 3-2.
Pimlico, Race 10, Learning... 2nd at 4-1 (xxx, 5.00, 3.20).
Pimlico, Race 12, Partner's Hero... Scratched.
Delaware, Race 7, Hourly Storm... 4th at 5-1.
Hollywood, Race 6, King's Drama... 2nd at 3-1 (xxx, 3.40, 2.60).

Belmont: The Belmont Stakes G1 $1 mil

Jazil 6-1
Bluegrass Cat 9-2
Sunriver 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Bluegrass Cat.
Collected $16.00 on the WP (xxx, 6.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-8.
...$1 exacta top four.
Ran 2-3-4-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-8.

Bluegrass Cat...Nice Derby performance seemed to confirm that Keeneland flop was a fluke. Other than that race --and debut effort, which is always one to forgive -- this guy has never missed the exacta. Velazquez back onboard. We've liked him all year -- won't jump off now.
Bob and John...Derby looks like a toss. Wood Memorial winner has been working well in SoCal for return to NY.
Sunriver...Think the connections have high hopes for this one and they were disappointed that they didn't get into the Derby field -- but went on to take the Dwyer in prep for this.

Belmont: True North Hcp G2 $200K

Anew 5-1
Tiger 4-5*
Spanish Chestnut 7-2

Wager: $5 WP on Spanish Chestnut.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta top four.
Collected $10.90 on the ex box ($21.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $30.00 on the tri box ($60.00/$2).

Spanish Chestnut...A couple of bullet works on the deep Saratoga training strip catch our eye.
Tiger/Voodoo...Tiger: Lightly raced 5YO has come to hand this year and last couple seem to indicate he belongs at top of this division. We'll know more today. Voodoo: Off since November -- but came off a layoff to run second in this race last year.
Anew...Like Tiger this guy has looked like "a new" horse in his 5YO season.
Celtic Innis.

Belmont: Just a Game Hcp G2 $300K

Gorella 3-5*
Pommes Frites 3-1
Ozone Bere 7-1

Wend scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Gorella.
Collected $14.00 on the WP (3.20, 2.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $8.20 on the ex box ($8.20/$2).
...$1 exacta top four.
Collected $4.10 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
No tri offered after scratches.

Gorella...Still think she has yet to show her best stuff on this side of the Atlantic -- but might be ready to pop with move back in against her own sex.
Pommes Frites...Speed is always scary -- and off the printed page this gal looks like the one to catch.
Ozone Bere...Solid G3 win in US debut. Will be tough if able to improve.

Belmont: Woody Stephens BC G2 $250K

Songster 5-2
Too Much Bling 6-5*
Noonmark 12-1

Wager: $5 WP on Songster.
Collected $27.75 on the WP (7.70, 3.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $15.80 on the ex box ($15.80/$2).
...$1 exacta top four.
Collected $7.90 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $50.50 on the tri box ($101.00/$2).

Songster...We liked him two back when he last met Too Much Bling -- he ran second that day but it was his first stakes try and run over a sealed track. Came back to demolish G3 field at Pimlico last time. Could be set to turn the tables on Bling.
Too Much Bling...Pro-tem leader of 3YO sprint division makes him the one to beat.
Likely...Lightly raced but showing plenty of promise.

Belmont: Acorn G1 $250K

Bushfire 9-2
Hello Liberty 9-1
Last Roamnce 15-1

Wager: $5 WP on Adieu.
Ran 4th at 9-5*.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-5.
...$1 exacta top four.
Ran 2-4-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-7.

Adieu...Had some trouble but still ran a decent second in 3YO debut. Winner that day came back to win a nice stake last weekend.
Ermine...Rounding into a legit contender in this division.
Teammate...Won a G3 at Gulfstream last time in her best yet -- but that was in March, so the pick is a little iffy.
Hello Liberty.

Belmont: Manhattan G1 $400K

Cacique 2-1*
Relaxed Gesture 4-1
Grey Swallow 7-2

Good Reward scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on English Channel.
Ran 4th at 2-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 exacta top four.
Collected $15.80 on the ex box ($31.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4.

English Channel...Confirmed his 4YO form with nice win in G1 on Derby undercard. He's the real deal.
Cacique...Bred to be a good one and capable to toss in a big performance at any moment.
Relaxed Gesture...Always a little hinky playing horses in their first back from Dubai -- but if he rebounds OK his 2005 form was superb.
Good Reward.

Monmouth: Spruce Fir Hcp $60K

I'mtoogoodtobetrue 1-1*
Beautiful East 7-2
Cigno d'Oro 6-1

Wager: $5 WP on Beautiful East.
Collected $8.50 on the WP (xxx, 3.40).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta top four.
Collected $6.80 on the WP ($13.60/$2).
...$1 tri key Beautiful East over next three.
Ran 2/1-3-5.

Beautiful East...Ran his best yet in seasonal debut. Could signal she's ready to move forward.
Cigno d'Oro...Defending champ of this event is making third start of 2006 and could be set for a good one.
I'mtoogoodtobetrue...Like top pick she's making her second start of the year and can go well.
Seventeen Above.

Monmouth: Point Given $60K

Malibu Moonshine 12-1
Scipion 7-2
Colita 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on We Can Seek.
Ran 4th at 4-5*.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-4.
...$1 exacta top four.
Ran 3-4-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-5-7.

We Can Seek...Shouldn't have a problem with the trip and might have a slight class edge on these.
Colita...Wouldn't be shocked to see this one scratch out to run in Delaware stake this afternoon. If he goes here for Pletcher he'll need to rebound to form shown earlier this year -- but should be eligible to do so on a 'fast' track.
Mike's Greenfields...Also cross-entered at Delaware. Tossed a clunker in a couple back -- but other wise has been going well.

Pimlico: Skipat $75K

Trickle of Gold 1-5*
Spirited Game 5-1
Chrusciki 20-1

Contrast, Career Oriented scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Trickle of Gold.
Collected $12.00 on the WP (2.60, 2.20).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 exacta top four.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 tri box top four.

Trickle of Gold...A little concerned about the outside post but clearly looks like the one to beat.
Sharp as a Fox...Been going well and getting better since winter but gets tested here.
Contrast...Lightly raced but has shown plenty of potential.
Career Oriented.

Delaware: Brandywine $100K

Smart Growth 7-1
Cherokee's Boy 7-5*
Happy Hunting 3-1

Colita scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Cherokee's Boy.
Collected $9.00 on the WP (xxx, 3.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-5.
...$1 exacta top four.
Ran 2-3-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-5.

Cherokee's Boy...Won this race last years and looks ready for possible repeat coming off of nice win in 2006 debut.
Bailero...Typically in the hunt and consistent most every time. Looks to fit in this field.
Happy Hunting...Most respect -- you don't see Phipps/McGaughey ship out of town too often.

Hollywood: Whittingham Mem Hcp G1 $300K

Lava Man 4-5*
King's Drama 3-1
Red Fort 9-2

Sweet Return completed the $137.20/$2 super.

Wager: $5 WP on King's Drama.
Collected $8.50 on the WP (xxx, 3.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $11.60 on the ex box ($11.60/$2).
...$1 exacta top four.
Collected $5.80 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $15.70 on the tri box ($31.40/$2).

King's Drama...Frankel/P Val runner is a G1 winner and should be tough if ready to go in first race since March.
Lava Man...Very scary off of turf win last time -- but that was against state-breds.
Red Fort...Just missed in this race last year.
Sweet Return.
