Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes
by Seth Merrow

Three winners on top in nine races -- we lost two of our original nineteen when they were moved off-turf (Monmouth, $3.80; Churchill, $5.80; Arlington, $4.60).

Otherwise we just couldn't get over the hump. Picked up some gimmicks here and there -- just missed on some others. Not a lot of value on what we did manage to grab.

WAGERED: $306.00
COLLECTED: $186.20

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets

Went 3-for-8. Swept our plays at Churchill and got a couple of promising runs in the others -- but just couldn't push them home when the real running began...

Belmont, Race 1, Hourly Storm... 4th at 7-1.
Belmont, Race 8, Latice... 6th at 5-1.
Churchill, Race 4, Morner... WON (3.00, 2.40, 2.10).
Churchill, Race 6, Octave... WON (4.40, 3.20, 2.60).
Churchill, Race 7, Rich In Spirit... WON (3.60, 2.40, 2.10).
Calder, Race 5, Formal Miss... Off-turf.
Calder, Race 7, Pattiano... Off-turf.
Arlington, Race 1, Beware Baby... 3rd at 4-5 (xxx, xxx, 2.60).
Arlington, Race 6, Portrait of a Lady.... 6th at 2-1.
Hollywood, Race 3, Stella's Posada... 3rd at 9-5 (xxx, xxx, 3.60).

Belmont: Sheepshead Bay Hcp G2 $150K

Honey Ryder 7-5*
Noble Stella 14-1
Angara 9-2

Wager: $5 WP on Latice
Ran 6th at 5-1.
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-6.

Latice...We've liked her since her US debut at Saratoga last summer. Looks like she'll have to step up her game a little to get it done here -- but could be ready to do so off of the nice seasonal debut win last time.
Honey Ryder...Pletcher turfer is clearly the one to beat. Stakes win last time was her best yet.
Asi Siempre...Can't knock the solid record since arriving stateside.
Angara.

Monmouth: JJ Reilly Hcp $60K

Joey P 3-5*
Quiet Desperation 12-1
Karakorum Tuxedo 20-1

Wager: $5 WP on Hammered
Ran 5th at 2-1.
...$4 ex box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$2 tri Hammered/Joey P/Who's the Cowboy.
Ran 5/1/4.

Hammered...Showed plenty of promise last year. Layoff is a concern but trainer seems to know how to get 'em ready.
Joey P...Nice 3YO season in 2005. Might need one.
Who's the Cowboy.

Monmouth: Frisk Me Now $65K

Park Avnue Ball 4-5*
Network 5-2
Your Bluffing 3-1

Contante, Sunshine Stalker scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Park Avenue Ball
Collected $15.00 on the WP ($3.80, 2.20).
...$2 ex box top two, sub next if scratch.
Rn 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-3-6.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 1-3-6.

Park Avenue Ball...Cross-entered in Philly stake -- but gets nod if he goes here on the horse-for-course angle.
Your Bluffing...Disappointed in last two -- so it might just be a case of his really liking Laurel. But if he takes to this surface he could prove tough.
Contante...Has shown some flashes and might appreciate this company.
Sunshine Stalker.
Cointreau.

Philly: LeVine Memorial Hcp $100K

Big Apple Daddy 1-2*
P Kerney 7-1
Little Thunder 5-1

Park Avenue Ball scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Little Thunder
Ran 3rd.
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Collected $7.00 on the ex box ($14.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Colected $17.70 on the tri box ($34.40/$2).

Little Thunder...Rounded to top form when taking the Artax at Gulfstream. Perhaps bounced in last. If that's the case he could prove tough this afternoon.
Big Apple Daddy...Numbers are improving and looks ready for another good effort.
Pocomoonshine...Another rounding into career best form.
Park Avenue Ball.
P Kerney.

Calder: Sara's Success $45K [Race 5]

Out of Pride 7-2
R Lady Joy 1-1*
Leona's Knight 17-1

Race was moved off the turf.

Formal Miss...Hasn't visited the winner's circle since end of 2004 but has been competitive, likes this track, and should find this group to her liking.
R Lady Joy...Nice 3YO season might give the idea she lays over this field -- but 2006 debut raises some questions. But might be tough if she takes to turf.
Ragtime Hope...Got good about this time last year and could be ready to return to that form.
Winnow.

Wager: $5 WP on Formal Miss
...$2 ex box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Calder: Sara's Success $45K [Race 7]

Silversider 3-1
Pattiano 4-1
American Miss 2-1*

Race was moved off the turf.

Pattiano...A little bit inconsistent but looks capable if she fires her best shot.
Moon Dolly...Nice, improving numbers in three starts this year and had trouble in each of those. Interesting.
Silversider...Nice score in a small stake last time despite trouble.
Mercy Matters.

Wager: $5 WP on Pattiano
...$2 ex box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Churchill: Winning Colors $100K

Ever Elusive 9-5*
Malibu Mint 50-1
Ebony Breeze 9-1

Wager: $5 WP on Ever Elusive
Collected $24.00 on the WP ($5.80. 3.80).
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-6-7.

Ever Elusive...Looks like some real speed in here to shoot at and this one has shown the ability to close.
Hot Storm...Ran best race in Sunshine Millions F/M Sprint. Off since -- but working well.
Reunited...Would probably rate this gal as top pick except for layoff. Trainer not really eye-popping in that category, but works are good.
Ten Carat Ruby.

Delaware: Go For Wand $100K

Unbridled Belle 3-2*
Amandatude 7-2
Diamond Spirit 2-1

Lady of Clare completed the $143.60/$2 super.

Wager: $5 WP on Amandatude
Collected $9.50 on the WP (xxx, 3.80).
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $8.80 on the ex box ($17.60/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $24.30 on the tri box ($48.60/$2).

Amandatude...Going well now and comes out of a nice stakes win on this track.
Diamond Spirit...Interesting on the simple fact that The Chief ships for this.
Lady of Clare...Very recent maiden-breaker -- but last two indicate she's really gotten the hang of it.
Unbridled Belle.

Arlington: Hanshin Hcp G3 $100K

Gouldings Green 6-5*
Fifteen Rounds 2-1
Three Hour Nap 5-1

Fifteen Rounds finished first but was DQ'd to second.

Wager: $5 ex box top two.
Collected $26.50 on the ex box ($10.60/$2).

Gouldings Green...Semaphore Man and With Distinction should provide some pace to shoot at and this one can capitalize -- but in a short field it's always a hinky play to depend on the speed to come back. We'll see...
Fifteen Rounds.

Hollywood: Proctor Memorial $65K

Genuine Talent 13-1
Gran Tenor 16-1
Stella's Posada 9-5*

Wager: $5 WP on Stella's Posada
Ran 3rd.
...$2 ex box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-6.
...$2 tri Stella's Posada over next three.
Ran 3/2-5-6.

Stella's Posada...Steps into stake off of solid debut win in maiden claimer. Big jump but gets a boost by moving into O'Neill barn.
Gran Tenor...Trouble in an OK first-try effort last time. Eligible to improve.
Sequoia King...Big debut win, then trouble when moved into a stake. Now adds blinkers for Asmussen which is a good move for that trainer.
Lord Mysterio.

Hollywood: Cinderella $65K

Richwoman 8-5
Sharoana 26-1
Lost On Champagne 15-1

Hello Irish scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Hello Irish

Ran 1-2-7.

Hello Irish...Debut effort was big -- albeit against Cal-breds.
Maria's Quest...Also had a big win in her first try.
Richwoman...Ships in for Asmussen off of Keeneland maiden-breaker.
Sharoana.
