Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Five winners on top in sixteen races (Aqueduct, $6.40; Tampa, $3.60, 4.40, 3.20; Hawthorne, $4.60). Not much value there -- and not much value to be mined out of the gimmicks we hit. We picked up a little something on most of the races, there just wasn't enough there to put us in striking position...

WAGERED: $659.00
COLLECTED: $349.15

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets

With only five plays going after a scratch -- and with a total $2 win-bet return of $13.20, we managed a decent 32% ROI.

Tampa, Race 7, Go Between... 2nd at 4-5 (xxx, 2.60, 2.20).
Tampa, Race 11, Silver Tree... WON (3.20, 2.40, 2.10).
Keeneland, Race 5, Wilcox Ridge... WON (5.40, 3.40, 2.60).
Keeneland, Race 10, Indigo Cat... Scratched.
Hawthorne, Race 7, Sweetnorthernsaint... WON (4.60, 3.20, 3.00).
Santa Anita, Race 9, Becrux... 5th at 11-1.

Our Head-to-Head feature pits Coast-to-Coast's Seth Merrow against DRF's Weekend Warrior, Mike Watchmaker. Whenever the two columns make selections in the same race we'll tally the results for each.

Aqueduct: Bay Shore G3 $150K

Too Much Bling 1-1*
Songster 3-2
One Way Flight 7-1

Wager: $5 WPS on One Way Flight.
Collected $7.00 on the WPS (xxx, xxx, 2.80).
...$5 exacta One Way Flight over Too Much Bling.
Ran 3/1.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.

One Way Flight...Probably needed that January start off the layoff. Showed speed in second to talented Achilles of Troy last time. Might be tough with cutback to sprint.
Too Much Bling... Looks like the one to beat from Baffert -- but does he like the home-cooking in SoCal, or has he just matured since NY campaign last year. We'll find out more today.
Songster...Second to the good Exclusive Quality is lone blemish on short record.
Trailing Twelve.

Aqueduct: Wood Memorial G1 $750K

Bob and John 2-1
Jazil 15-1
Keyed Entry 4-5*

Wager: $5 WP on Bob and John.
Collected $27.25 on the WP (6.40, 4.50).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-6-7.

Bob and John...Already a stakes winner at the trip. Could be tough to catch in here.
Deputy Glitters...Question is -- has he turned the corner, or did he just take to the Tampa course? We'll find out today...
Keyed Entry...First try around two turns looked like a good education. Expect a good effort again.
Greeley's Legacy.

Aqueduct: Carter Hcp G1 $300K

Bishop Court Hill 8-1
Sir Greeley 2-1
Big Apple Daddy 8-1

Kazoo, Silver Train scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Kazoo.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4.

Kazoo...Stretches out off of a couple of inner track sprints and he might be this good.
Silver Train...Got especially good last fall -- but 2006 return was nothing to write home about. Improvement expected, but will it be enough?
Sir Greeley...Back in town after some good tries in Florida. Has run well on this track in the past.
Mass Media.

Keeneland: Ashland G1 $500K

Bushfire 15-1
Wait a While 3-1
Balance 1-2*

Wager: $5 WP on Balance.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-4-7.

Balance...Besides the DQ she's won five of six lifetime starts. Gets tested outside of SoCal for first time but looks like the real deal.
Wait a While...Forecast says some morning showers are possible and any moisture in the track moves this one up.
Itty Bitty Pretty...Seems improved since returning as a 3YO.
Saratoga Drive.

Tampa: Sophomore $75K

Electrify 4-5*
Vanilla Scoop 28-1
R Smoken Star 5-1

Ran 1-3-6-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-6-8.

Electrify...Might be slightly classier than these.
R Smoken Star...Nice improvement to win second start. Horses just behind last time have come back to win. Could be any kind.
Put Back the Shu.
Big Lover.

Tampa: Sophomore Turf $75K

Mr Silver 7-2
Go Between 4-5*
World Battle 11-1

Wager: $5 WP on Go Between.
Collected $6.50 on the WP (xxx, 2.60).

Collected $24.80 on the ex box ($24.80/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $12.40 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $61.80 on the tri box ($123.60/$2).

Go Between...Post position is certainly no bonus but Mott trainee looked good winning a G3 across the state last time.
Mr Silver...Faded behind top pick in latest -- but expect he's better than that performance.
Soldier's Word...Big closing kick to take last.
World Battle.

Tampa: Sophomore Fillies $75K

Quelle Surprise 29-1
Love Boot 53-1

Ran 3-4-6-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-6-9.

Saint Aiello...Improving numbers. Looks to have plenty of upside.
Running Lass...Impressive 2YO through the summer, then faltered to end the season and took awhile to come to form this year -- but if she repeats the performance from last time she could prove very tough.
A Sea Trippi...Seems to be maturing nicely -- but two misses at this trip are a concern.

Tampa: Turf Distaff $75K

Thetactics Ofdance 6-5
Pattiano 11-1
Changing World 4-1

Wager: $5 WP on Thetactics Ofdance.
Collected $19.00 on the WP (4.40, 3.20).

Collected $36.00 on the ex box ($36.00/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $18.00 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-9-11.

Thetactics Ofdance...A couple of starts since moving into Mott barn. Moving in the right direction. Looks a little faster than these.
Pattiano...She'll compete here on her best effort -- but low percentage outfit won't help her chances.
Yes It's Gold...Comes out of s string of sprints and might be the one to catch.
Skip's Singer.

Tampa: Turf Classic $75K

Silver Tree 3-5*
Icy Atlantic 5-2
Ballonenostrikes 16-1

Touched by Madness scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Silver Tree.

Collected $8.20 on the ex box ($8.20/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $4.10 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4.

Silver Tree...Hasn't had a win in awhile -- but doesn't face the likes of Leriodesanimaux or English Channel today.
Icy Atlantic...Another that should find this group easier.
Touched by Madness...Looks like the speed.
Be My Buddy.

Hawthorne: Illinois Derby G2 $500K

Sweetnorthernsaint 6-5*
Mister Triester 27-1
Cause to Believe 2-1

Wager: $5 WP on Sweetnorthernsaint.

...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-6-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-6-7.

Sweetnorthernsaint...Outside post won't help -- but if he can get an early lead he might be tough to catch on this course.
My Golden Song...Could be coming in under the radar for Pletcher. Not a bad fourth in G2 Fountain of Youth and he had a piece of that traffic congestion in the lane.
Cause to Believe...Always a little leery of these NoCal invaders -- but Hollendorfer trainee looks to be improving.

Oaklawn: Apple Blossom Hcp G1 $500K

Spun Sugar 3-1
Happy Ticket 6-5*
La Reason 44-1

Wager: $5 W on Star Parade.
Ran 5th at 9-5.
...$3 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-5.
...$2 tri key Star Parade over next two.
Ran 5/1-2.

Star Parade...Last two dirt races were excellent.
Happy Ticket...Bang-up second to Round Pond in prep for this will rank as one of the best races of the year and proved convincing that this gal is more than a sprinter.
Spun Sugar.

Oaklawn: Oaklawn Hcp G2 $500K

Magnum 2-1*
Gouldings Green 23-1

Wager: $5 WP on Purim.

Collected $11.60 on the ex box ($23.20/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7-8.

Purim...Solid win in G3 Razorback seems to indicate he'll be a player in the division.
Magnum...Has tossed a couple of huge numbers in last two -- and repeat makes him the one to beat.
Buzzards Bay...Nice Golden Gate stakes win seems to indicate he's in good form now.
Andromeda's Hero.

Santa Anita: American Beauty Hcp $98K

Shining Energy 5-2
Moscow Burning 1-1*
Midwife 15-1

Movie Star scratched.

Ran 2-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $9.30 on the ex box ($18.60$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-5.

Moscow Burning...Her two recent stakes wins have been in restricted company -- but this bunch doesn't seem to be much tougher.
Movie Star/New Regina...Both Frankel runners look capable of being heard from in here.
Shining Energy...Close-up fifth last time despite some traffic.

Santa Anita: Santa Anita Derby G1 $750K

Brother Derek 1-2*
Point Determined 7-2
AP Warrior 4-1

Wager: $5 WP on AP Warrior.

...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $3.70 o the ex box ($7.40/$2).
...$1 tri key AP Warrior over next three.
Ran 3/1-2-4.

AP Warrior...If Point Determined can keep Brother Derek occupied early this guy might have a chance to repeat his performance from thee G2 San Felipe.
Brother Derek... On the other hand, if Derek can control things down the backstretch he'll be tough to reel in.
Point Determined...Still learning and eligible to improve.
Sacred Light.

Santa Anita: Providencia G3 $100K

Foxysox 4-1
Harriett Lane 3-2*
Chosen Royalty 9-2

...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-4-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-5-6.

Becrux...Is going to need to step it up -- but have a sneaking suspicion he might be ready to do it in second start of 4YO season.
Milk It Mick...The one to beat off of G1 Kilroe win.
Terroplane...Will be rolling late.
Sweet Return.

If we are interested in both halves of an entry -- in event of a scratch -- it is noted that way. If only one-half of the entry is named, then we prefer that half and will move to our next pick listed in event of a scratch.
Scratches listed in our results reflect only horses that were part of our selections, not necessarily all the horses that were scratched. Check official results for complete information.
