Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Just one of those days. One winner in eight races (Aqueduct, $3.00)... And not much besides. We picked up some small low-value gimmicks. But the Laurel and Turfway stakes were a little bit on the inscrutable side of things...

WAGERED: $334.00
COLLECTED: $78.50

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets

Live the sword, die by the sword. We grabbed a winner at Aqueduct on a DQ -- then lost a winner at Tampa by a DQ. We still managed to end the afternoon with a positive ROI.

Aqueduct, Race 6, Mr Hamlen... WON -by DQ- (8.90, 4.40, 2.50).
Gulfstream, Race 11, Grand Heritage... 8th at 5-2
Laurel, Race 8, Charming Jim... WON (3.40, 2.40, 2.40).
Tampa, Race 6, Firebrook... WON (6.00, 3.20, 3.00).
Tampa, Race 10, Professor Biggs... won -- DQd to 2nd at 5-2 -- (xxx, 3.40, 2.60).
Turfway, Race 9, Fidrych... 12th at 12-1.
Turfway, Race 10, Silent Times... 11th at 7-2.
Santa Anita, Race 2, Tiz Royalty... 3rd -DH- (xxx, xxx, 2.60).

Head-to-Head

Our Head-to-Head feature pits Coast-to-Coast's Seth Merrow against DRF's Weekend Warrior, Mike Watchmaker. Whenever the two columns make selections in the same race we'll tally the results for each.

Nad Al Sheba: Dubai World Cup 7th/Maraahel 2nd/Brass Hat
Turfway: Rushaway 12th at 12-1/Fidrych 7th at 5-2/Fabled
Turfway: Lane's End 11th at 7-2/Silent Times 6th at 5-1/Hemingway's Key
This Week 3-0-0-0 3-0-1-0
YTD/win mutuel 33-6-3-1, $43.10 33-3-4-5, $25.50
(Head-to-Head results above are only for those races which were common to both columns. Weekend Warrior might have tabbed other races not reflected in the results above.)

Nad Al Sheba: Dubai World Cup G1 $6 mil

Electrocutionist
Brass Hat
Wilko

Wager: $5 WP on Maraahel.
Ran 7th.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-7.

Maraahel...Been running well in grass stakes in Europe. Taken to pull an upset here.
Brass Hat...Has reached top form since coming back from longtime on the sidelines. Looked good winning G1 Donn last time.
Kane Hekili...Grandson of Sunday Silence is one of the top runners in Japan.
Magna Graduate.

Aqueduct: Distaff BC Hcp G2 $150K

Smokey Glacken 1-2*
Magnolia Jackson 7-1
Annika Lass 17-1

Wager: $5 WP on Smokey Glacken.
Collected $13.50 on the WP (3.00, 2.40).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $22.40 on the ex box ($11.20/$2).
...$2 tri key Smokey Glacken over next three.
Ran 1/2-5-6.

Smokey Glacken...Was already a talented stakes performer -- but showed marked improvement in Florida this winter. Horse-for-course, or has she just gotten that much better? We'll know more today, but either way she's the one to beat.
Magnolia Jackson...Similar story to top pick -- on a smaller scale. She seems to have thrived with the move to the inner track.
Great Intentions...Three nice, improving starts this season.
Flame of Love.

Laurel: Private Terms $85K

Our Peak 73-1
Ah Day 5-1
Sunshine Alpine 5-2

Wager: $5 WP on Sunshine Alpine.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-8.

Sunshine Alpine...Behind the surprising Like Now in last two. Toss the last -- looks too bad to be true. Expect a rebound in this company and cutting back to one-turn.
Vegas Play...Only bad race was a turf stake behind Barbaro. Has shown some promise and looks to be improving.
Happy Surprise...Only two races on her resume so far -- but maiden-breaker was very impressive.
Ah Day.

Gulfstream: Rampart Hcp G2 $200K

Oonagh Maccool 1-1*
Sweet Symphony 8-5
Classy Charm 22-1

Wager: $5 WP on Sweet Symphony.
Collected $6.50 on the WP (xxx, 2.60).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $19.20 on the ex box ($9.60/$2).
...$1 tri key Sweet Symphony over next three.
Ran 1/2-4-5.

Sweet Symphony...After winning four starts including the G1 Alabama to start her career it looked like she was destined for superstardom. But she disappointed in last two of her 2005 season. Feel that Mott will have her ready for top effort.
Oonagh Maccool...Pletcher trainee is a lightly raced daughter of Giant's Causeway and could prove to be a good one.
Eyes On Eddy...Capable of competing here on her best effort.
Mocita.

Turfway: Rushaway $100K

High Cotton 3-1
Special Interest 39-1
Bear Character 31-1

Wager: $5 WP on Fidrych.
Ran 12th at 12-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 9-12.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-7-9-12.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-7-9-12.

Fidrych...Always like this set-up: Third start off the layoff and now stretches off of two sprints. Will need to step it up here, but he's eligible to improve.
In A Flash...Has shown a little bit of promise in two US starts. Post position is no bonus.
High Cotton...3YO debut was too bad to believe. Trainer Pletcher will have him ready for better today.
Fabled.

Turfway: Lane's End G2 $500K

With a City 48-1
Seaside Retreat 11-1
Malameeze 15-1

Wager: $5 WP on Silent Times.
Ran 11th at 7-2*.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 9-11.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 4-5-9-11.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 4-5-9-11.

Silent Times...Hmmm, wonder if win in the G2 Champagne in UK doesn't indicate this guy might have a slight class edge on these. But long layoff, first start on dirt, and outside post might be too much to overcome.
Tahoe Warrior...Interesting entrant from Pletcher... Seems to have returned as an improved 3YO and moves turf-to-dirt.
Superfly...Zito trainee has only one win to his credit, but typically picks up a piece.
More Than Regal.

Oaklawn: Honeybee $75K

Ermine 5-1
Brownie Points 4-5*
Morner 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on Morner.
Ran 3rd.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-3.
...$1 tri key Morner over next three.
Ran 3/2-4-5.
...$1 tri key Brownie Points over next three.
Ran 2/3-4-5.

Morner...Third start off layoff and put together improving numbers in first two starts.
Brownie Points...Jumped up to run best yet in first start over this track.
Kat Nan Do...Could be the one to beat if she runs her best.
Baghdaria.

Santa Anita: San Luis Rey Hcp G2 $200K

King's Drama 3-5*
TH Approval 5-2
Wild Buddy 35-1

Wager: $5 WP on TH Approval.
Collected $7.00 on the ex box (xxx, 2.80).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $6.60 on the ex box ($6.60/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $3.30 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5-6.

TH Approval...Just missed in San Luis Obispo in first start off a long layoff. If he gained anything from tat race he could prove tough here.
King's Drama/Atlando...King's Drama faded to finish just behind top pick in last. Another that should be tighter today. Atlando finished ahead of top pick last time and will contend again.
One Off...Another making second start back off long layoff and might add a little bit of value in here.
Eastern Sand.

If we are interested in both halves of an entry -- in event of a scratch -- it is noted that way. If only one-half of the entry is named, then we prefer that half and will move to our next pick listed in event of a scratch.
Scratches listed in our results reflect only horses that were part of our selections, not necessarily all the horses that were scratched. Check official results for complete information.
