Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Hopefully it's in like a lamb and out like a lion as, so far, March is turning out to be a struggle. No winners on top in ten races (we lost one that went off-the-turf). That's the first time that's happened in a long, long time.

Otherwise we dribbed and drabbed a little bit with the plays -- but as we approach March Madness let's use a hoops analogy: Like a shooter who has gone cold, just keep shooting until thee touch comes back...

We'll get it going soon.

Celestial Legend..Mid-Atlantic invader is undefeated in six career starts -- including the last four in stakes company. Best until beaten.
Oprah Winney...Beaten fave in the Ruthless -- suspect she's better than that performance though and expect a rebound.
Ring True...Stepped from MSW debut win straight into stakes company -- winning that too. Could be a good one.
Swap Fliparoo.

Keyed Entry...Pletcher trainee is undefeated and won G2 over the talented First Samurai last time. Stretches to two turns but should pass the test.
Achilles of Troy...Got very good late last year and now has fired two big Beyer number stakes wins. The one to beat.
Sunshine Alpine...Lightly raced and it looks like he has potential. A couple of nice 7F works in tow for this.
Sweetnorthensaint.

Jim Thirds Bolero.

Bluegrass Cat...Undefeated since moving into Pletcher barn and clearly looks best here. Won prep over the track last time.
Storm Treasure...Second in 3YO debut behind promising Strong Contender. Improvement expected.
Deputy Glitters...Surprised by getting up for second at 63-1 behind Bluegrass Cat last time. That was his first around two turns -- so maybe he appreciates that scenario.
Little Cliff/Ice N Lemon.

Oaklawn: Rebel G3 $300K

Lawyer Ron 9-5*
Red Raymond 22-1
Steppenwolfer 5-2

Wager: $5 WP on Steppenwolfer.

...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-7-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-7-8.

Steppenwolfer...Closing effort was just a little short of catching Lawyer Ron last time. Now is reunited with Albarado and gets an extra half a furlong. Might be enough to turn the tables.
Lawyer Ron...We might be outsmarting ourselves -- this guy has been invincible since leaving Kentucky last fall. Won a rich stake here last time and often we, as handicappers, do just what I'm doing, take the horse who was closing on the minor stretchout in distance -- only to see the results repeat from last time. We'll see...
Private Vow...Tops some Ky Derby lists despite not having a 3YO start yet. Seems behind the 8-ball but we'll know more this afternoon.
Music School.

Santa Anita: Flower Girl Hcp $80K

Maryfield 7-2
Freakin Streakin 1-1*
Wild Storm 8-5

Race moved off turf.
Lock and Key, Starkey scratched.

Freakin Streakin...Consistent -- but hasn't won since Del Mar. Should be interesting cutting back in distance.
Lock And Key...Euro-imports are always scary.
Wild Storm...Career best last time when moved to turf -- this course and trip.
Starkay.

Santa Anita: San Felipe G3 $250K

AP Warrior 7-1
Point Determined 7-2
Bob and John 1-1*

Wager: $5 WP on Racketeer.

Ran 3-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-7.

Racketeer...Only three starts so far so he's still learning. Stretches off of a couple of nice sprints. Might surprise with P Val onboard.
Bob and John...Hasn't run a bad one yet. Comes in off convincing win in 9F G3 Sham. Clearly the one to beat.
AP Warrior...We've been chasing this guy in his last two. He's disappointed us but we won't give up completely.
Simon Pure.

Santa Anita: Pasadena $80K

To Sender 1-1*
Tent 5-1
Genre 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on Point of Impact.

...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-7.

Point of Impact...Baffert youngster is well-bred and seemed to turn the corner last time. Working well -- but the turf is still a question mark.
To Sender...Frankel/Juddmonte Euro-import made a successful debut on US soil last time.
Genre...A couple of decent tries behind Bob and John. Plenty of good grass experience in Europe.
Stratham.

If we are interested in both halves of an entry -- in event of a scratch -- it is noted that way. If only one-half of the entry is named, then we prefer that half and will move to our next pick listed in event of a scratch.
Scratches listed in our results reflect only horses that were part of our selections, not necessarily all the horses that were scratched. Check official results for complete information.
