Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

One winner on top in seven races [Oaklawn, $3.20). And, yeesh, the plays really faltered. Only one race offered up a return as it was another week where we had two of the top three -- but no exacta -- in enough of them to drive us up a wall. But the hair-puller of the week was unquestionably the Toboggan at Aqueduct. We've said it before, sometimes in a short field you just have to take a stand -- and that's what we did in the six-horse Toboggan. We veered from our usual wagering tmeplate and keyed a couple of tri's. Unfortunately it cost us as the key missed -- but if we had boxed the plays (as we usually do) we would have picked up the exacta ($43.80/$2) and tri ($132.50/$2). Not bank-busters by any means, but they would have made a difference this week.

WAGERED: $235.00
COLLECTED: $44.20

Best Bets

We noted on Saturday that we were loading up more than usual this week -- but we found some interesting entrants at the various tracks. After a scratch we were left with eleven plays and two of those won. Most of the rest were certainly in the hunt -- and Manor Lodge was just edged in the shadow of the wire to lose by a neck at 7-1. That win would have put us over the top...

Aqueduct, Race 7, Backchat... WON (3.00, 2.20, 2.10).
Gulfstream, Race 5, Ocean Beauty... 3rd at 4-1 (xxx, xxx, 3.20).
Gulfstream, Race 10, Manor Lodge... 2nd at 7-1 (xxx, 8.80, 4.60).
Tampa, Race 5, Dazed... 4th at 6-5.
Tampa, Race 8, Nightmare Affair... 3rd at 6-1 (xxx, xxx, 4.00).
Tampa, Race 8, Dazzling Dr Cevin, WPS... Scratched.
Tampa, Race 9, King Cassia... 4th at 3-2.
Oaklawn, Race 4, Plenty Potentate... 3rd at 8-5 (xxx, xxx, 2.60).
Oaklawn, Race 6, Just a Mack... 3rd at 2-1 (xxx, xxx, 3.20).
Oaklawn, Race 11, So Busted... 4th at 2-1.
Santa Anita, Race 4, Sam's Ace... WON (8.00, 4.60, 3.60).
Santa Anita, Race 5, Get the Money... 4th at 6-5.

Head-to-Head

Our Head-to-Head feature pits Coast-to-Coast's Seth Merrow against DRF's Weekend Warrior, Mike Watchmaker. Whenever the two columns make selections in the same race we'll tally the results for each.

Aqueduct: Toboggan Hcp G3 $100K

Kazoo 5-1
Bishop Court Hill 2-1
Wild Jam 4-1

Wager: $5 WP on High Blitz.
Ran 4th at 2-1*.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$2 tri key High Blitz over next three.
Ran 4/1-2-3.
...$1 tri key Bishop Court Hill over next three.
Ran 2/1-3-4.

High Blitz...Was lightly raced last year now seems ready to string a few together. Good debut effort over this track and gets nod with the red-hot Dominguez aboard.
Bishop Court Hill...A neck ahead of top pick two back at Woodbine. Followed up with front-running score in stake here. Dangerous.
Kazoo...Likes the track and the trip should offer pressure to Bishop Court Hill early.
Wild Jam.

Gulfstream: Canadian Turf Hcp $100K

English Channel 9-5*
Miesque's Approval 10-1
Silver Tree 9-5

Wager: $5 WP on Silver Tree.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.

Silver Tree...Couldn't provide the storybook finish to Jerry Bailey's career in Sunshine Millions Turf but was boxed in that day and made a big move when finally free -- winner just got the jump. Consistent, tough and one to beat with a clean trip.
English Channel...Perhaps the top 3YO turfer last year. Solid against older in G1 Turf Classic. Now making first start since fifth in G1 BC Turf. Should be ready.
Gulch Approval...Should be leading early and capable of holding on for a piece.
Good Reward.

Tampa: Challenge $65K

Cherokee Prince 29-1
Seek Gold 3-1
Nightmare Affair 6-1

Dazzling Dr Cevin scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Nightmare Affair.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-8.

Nightmare Affair...We've been chasing this guy the last couple -- maybe today's the day. Looked good late chasing Sir Shackleton's track record performance last time and might be set up making fourth start off of a break and stretching after three sprints.
Tap Day...The 800-pound gorilla in the field. Second in a G1 last summer which gives him a class edge on these -- but might need one making first start back since flopperoo in Japan last November.
Dazzling Dr Cevin...Another we've been trying to get home over the last three. The big win in the off-turf Calder Derby seemed to indicate some real potential. Maybe today -- or maybe not.
Cherokee Prince.

Laurel: Conniver $75K

Spirited Game 16-1
Plata 7-1
Promenade Girl 3-5*

Wager: $5 WP on Promenade Girl.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-6.

Promenade Girl...Comes in riding a three-race win streak, including two stakes -- the last against open company.
Silmaril...Hmmm, She was really showing some promise about this time last year -- but completed 2005 with two summer duds. She might need one but if she's anywhere close to her form from last winter, this bunch isn't that tough.
Magical Broad...Typically is in the hunt for a piece.
Plata.

Oaklawn: Azeri BC G3 $175K

Round Pond 3-5*
Happy Ticket 6-5
Platinum Ballet 16-1

Wager: $5 W on Round Pond.
Collected $8.00 on the WP ($3.20).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Collected $20.00 on the ex box ($10.00/$2).
...$2 tri key Round Pond over next three.
Collected $16.20 on the tri key ($16.20/$2).

Round Pond...Solid 7-5-1-1 lifetime record. Was laid up but return seems to indicate that she's ready to make big noise in this division.
Happy Ticket...Another with an impressive record (!4-11-2-0) but we're still not totally convinced that two-turns is her best game.
La Reason...Won a minor stake this track and trip last time.
Platinum Ballet.

Santa Anita: China Doll $80K

Foxysox 14-1
Golden Silk 11-1
Incumbent 7-1

Horse B With You scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Kitty Hawk.
Ran 6th at 3-5*.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 6-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-6-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-6-8.

Kitty Hawk...Euro-import was a solid winner in US debut. Good fit with this bunch.
Quarterly Report...Couple of promising starts for Baffert on dirt. Should compete here if she takes to the grass.
Incumbent...Decent try in turf debut despite trouble.
Horse B With You.

Santa Anita: Santa Margarita Hcp G1 $300K

Healthy Addiction 8-1
Dream of Summer 5-2
Seafree 4-1

Star Parade scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Star Parade.
Scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-4.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-4.

Star Parade...Toss the turf tries and this one is solid over last couple on dirt. 6-3-2-0 on this track.
Proposed...Lightly raced 4YO has shown plenty so far. Second to top pick in a G1 last time.
Dream of Summer...Popped up 17 Beyer points to just miss in this race last year. Similar scenario in 2006?
Seafree.

If we are interested in both halves of an entry -- in event of a scratch -- it is noted that way. If only one-half of the entry is named, then we prefer that half and will move to our next pick listed in event of a scratch.
Scratches listed in our results reflect only horses that were part of our selections, not necessarily all the horses that were scratched. Check official results for complete information.
