Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

It was mostly hit-and-miss all day with even the hits offering little value. We take solace in the fact that we went four-for-fourteen with winners on top to squeak out a modest profit in that category (Laurel, $7.60, $3.40; La Down/FG, $3.20; Hollywood, $14.30).

Our biggest disappointment of the afternoon came in the Prevue at Hollywood. Typically on this page we work off of a standard wagering template that we'll tinker with if the situation warrants. Short fields usually force us to take a stand and that's exactly what we did on Saturday at Hollywood. We don't want to complicate things with long lists of "If-Thens" (ie, if Silky Sullivan is at least 3-1 then bet...) -- things are more fun to follow when they're kept simple. But that means we sometimes get zapped like this week when our top pick in the short field of the Prevue went off a juicy 6-1. We thought the 4-1 on the ML was probably too generous. Doh!

We took a stand in the Prevue with a quinella and tri and missed the WP ($14.30. 5.80) as well as the exacta ($65.40/$2) and quinella ($33.40/$2) with our top choice over our third selection. It's easily conceivable that we could have aded another $200 or so to our bankroll if we had only used our typical $5 WP play and perhaps dipped further into the exacta or quinella with our third choice (as we did elsewhere on the card in the Stuyvesant at Aqueduct). C'est la vie.

WAGERED: $580.00

Head-to-Head

Our Head-to-Head feature pits Coast-to-Coast's Seth Merrow against DRF's Weekend Warrior, Mike Watchmaker. Whenever the two columns make selections in the same race we'll tally the results for each.

11/19/2005

The Head-to-Head excitement continues. Once again this week Merrow and Watchmaker shared a winner. Coast-to-coast continues to maintain a lead in the winners and in-the-money categories, while Weekend Warrior is tops with money-won. Both players still need a few more bucks to pass the break-even mark however...

Love Antics...Lightly raced and on the improve.
Foxs Gold Digger.

Laurel: Selima $125K

Art Show...Hasn't missed an exacta in five starts and show improving Beyers throughout. Experience counts and she's battle-tested with a stakes win.
J'ray...Pletcher/Bailey NY-bred won an open stake at Keeneland. Might rate higher but will have to overcome outside post.
Ebony Rose...Uncoupled Pletcher entry broke her maiden in an improved effort last time.
Nice Nelly.

Laurel: Stefanita $75K

Valley of the Gods...Seems at the top of her game now and won a stake this trip and track last time.
Traci Girl...3-for-6 at the distance. Making third start off layoff.
Storm Minstrel.

Laurel: Laurel Futurity $125K

Barbaro...Good turf sire in Dynaformer. Dam was graded stakes-placed in NY. Sharp debut win indicates he could be a good one in the making.
Wedding Singer...Best turf effort was on firm ground and Pletcher/Velazquez runner might be tough if able to get that footing again today.
Rock Lobster...Stretches out today off of two good, closing sprint efforts.
Diabolical.

...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $5.00 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $20.50 on the tri box ($41.00/$2).

Trickle of Gold...Brings in a 5-race win-streak> all of those were 6F so the 1M trip is a concern but speedball will be aided on the stretchout by the fact that it's only one-turn.
Sticky...Cutting back off of a couple of good two-turn tries. Should be rolling late.
Classy Charm...Tried the turf for four races earlier this year and seems to have come back improved since return to dirt.
Lexi Star.

Collected $39.00 on the ex box ($78.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-10-11.

Battle Chant...The clunker last time was likely due to the dawdling pace. Things should set up today in a way to allow this one to rebound to prior good form.
Proud Man...7YO millionaire is still capable of competing at this level.
Major Rhythm...Could add some value here.
Dreadnaught.

Laurel: DeFrancis Memorial G1 $300K

Collected $13.00 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5-13.

Tiger Heart...Ran second and split Taste of Paradise and Lion Tamer in G1 Vosburgh and those two ran 2-3 in BC Sprint. Goes out for same connections as those of Silver Train -- the BC Sprint winner.
I'm the Tiger...Faded in Vosburgh but might appreciate return to a track with tighter turns.
Abbondanza...2-2 at Laurel and always seems to sneak in for a piece.
Saay Mi Name.

...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-5-7.

Dyna's Destiny...Broke maiden convincingly two back and followed with a decent stakes debut. Should benefit from the education.

...$1 exacta box top four.

...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-7-8-10.

Desert Wheat...Stakes-place against open company -- seems well-spotted against state-breds.
Union Parish...Solid debut win. Tested today but could be a good one.
Voodoo Gold...Toss last. Will be tough if able to duplicate prior good form in turf debut.
Justin's Magic.

Hollywood: Hollywood Prevue G3 $100K

Your Tent Or Mine 6-1
Da Stoops 5-1
The Pharaoh 4-1

Wager: $10 quinella top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$2 tri key Your Tent Or Mine over next two.
Ran 1/2-5.

Your Tent Or Mine...By potent first-out sire, won debut at Del Mar. Off since but trainer OK in that department. Well be tough if able to show some decent second-start improvement.
Bengal Lore...Plenty of early speed and has just missed in stake last two tries.
Da Stoops... Cal-bred from Baffert also has early foot. Cutting back from one mile try last time.

If we are interested in both halves of an entry -- in event of a scratch -- it is noted that way. If only one-half of the entry is named, then we prefer that half and will move to our next pick listed in event of a scratch.
Scratches listed in our results reflect only horses that were part of our selections, not necessarily all the horses that were scratched. Check official results for complete information.
