Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

It was not a bad day. We got zapped when Diane Nelson brought in the very consistent -- but seemingly over-matched -- Acey Deucy at Belmont, otherwise we picked up at least a little something in every other race. But as sometimes happens, we were chasing the value all day. Things were just short enough to keep us a half-notch below break-even.

Three winners on top in seven races (Monmouth, $5.00; Churchill, $8.60; Hollywood, $5.40). That adds up to a decent 36% ROI in the win-only category.

We also had a few gimmicks that added to our total, highlighted by boxed tri's at Churchill ($88.00/$2) and Hollywood ($128.20/$2). And in that Churchill race our top four combined for the $506.00/$2 super.

WAGERED: $328.00
COLLECTED: $317.50

Best Bets
Never hurts to have some luck on your side and ours continued as we had yet another DQ go in our favor. Overall a $2 win wager on each Best Bet returned $19.80. That a 65% ROI on the afternoon...

Monmouth, Race 9, Capeside Lady... WON (5.00, 3.00, 2.40).

Hollywood, Race 6, Pink Coral... WON moved up from 2nd on DQ (9.40, 5.60, 3.40).
Hollywood, Race 7, Surf Cat... WON (5.40, 3.60, 3.00).
Hollywood, Race 8, Borrego... 2nd at 7-1 (xxx, 7.40, 4.40).

Ran 4-7.
...$1 tri key Burnish over next three.
Ran 7/2e-3e-4.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2e-3e-4-7.

Burnish...At the top of her game right now and will be aided by any moisture in the track.
Talented...Pletcher filly is lightly raced but looks capable of competing here.
Contrast...Filly is bred to be a fast one and has run to that breeding so far. Gets her sternest test yet.
Sense of Style/Maddalena.

Monmouth: Molly Pitcher BC Hcp G2 $200K

Capeside Lady 3-2
Bending Strings 3-1
Emerald Earrings 5-1

Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-5-6.

Capeside Lady...Showed a return to good form -- plus a liking for this surface -- winning latest.
Emerald Earrings...Like the set-up stretching out after two sprints.
One for Rose...Canadian invader is always in the hunt.
La Reason.

Churchill: Heavenly Cause $72K

Flying Glitter 6-1
Culinary 1-1
She's That Cat 10-1

Wager: $5 WP on Culinary.
Collected $7.50 on the WP (xxx, 3.00).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $36.80 on the ex box ($36.80/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $18.40 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Culinary...Could be ready to pop in third start as a 3YO. Finds a cozy spot after four straight graded stakes tries.
Flying Glitter...Seems to have turned the corner.
Caroline's Gold...Might have gained some two-turn education last time.
Hot Attraction.

Churchill: Debutante G3 $100K

Effectual 3-1
Joint Effort 2-1
Swept Gold 4-1

Dance Daily completed the $506.00/$2 super.

Wager: $5 WP on Effectual.
Collected $32.00 on the WP (8.60, 4.20).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $12.60 on the ex box ($25.20/$2.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $44.00 on the tri box ($88.00/$2).

Effectual...Asmussen is a solid 25% with second-time starters and this miss looked very good winning at first asking last time despite some trouble.
Dance Daily...We liked her in the Ky Derby undercard stake against the boys. She faded that day but expect better with a return to facing her own sex.
Joint Effort...Moved forward nicely in second start and looks ready for this assignment.
Swept Gold.

Hollywood: A Gleam Hcp G2 $150K

Alphabet Kisses 8-5
Valentine Dancer 7-1
Muir Beach 28-1

Wager: $5 WP on Puxa Saco.
Ran 8th at 3-1.

Ran 1-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $18.90 on the ex box ($37.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-7-8.

Puxa Saco...Looks to be in nice, improving form and won G# stake this track and trip in latest.
Alphabet Kisses...We were disappointed Stevens didn't send her last time. She faded in that G2 two-turn stake and we expect better with a return to sprinting and we're hoping for a more aggressive ride from the rail post.
Heavenly Humor...Seems to be an improved 4YO.
Valentine Dancer.

Hollywood: Swaps BC G2 $00K

Surf Cat 8-5
Dover Dere 15-1
Indian Ocean 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Surf Cat.
Collected $22.50 on the WP (5.40, 3.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $21.90 on the ex box ($43.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $64.10 on the tri box ($128.20/$2).

Surf Cat...Trainer is red-hot at the meet and we think this lady might have gotten just what she needed out of her first two-turn try last time.
Indian Ocean...Beat top pick in G3 stake last month and looks like the one to beat if able to duplicate that effort going another half-furlong.
Don't Get Mad...Woke up with move to Churchill Downs but we need to see him repeat that good form in SoCal before backing on top.
Dover Dere.

Hollywood: Hollywood Gold Cup G1 $750K

Lava Man 6-1
Borrego 7-1
Congrats 5-2

Wager: $5 WP on Borrego.
Collected $18.50 on the WP (xxx, 7.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-3-5-8.

Borrego...Seemed like an improved 4YO earlier in season then perhaps bounced off of big effort two back when fourth last time. Might rebound with stretch to 10F.
Anziyan Royalty...Could be ready to throw in a big one.
Limehouse...The one to beat off of convincing G2 Brooklyn win but cross-country trip is always a concern.
