Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

We eeked out the most modest of profits -- but it had been a few weeks since we turned that corner so this was a breath of fresh air that will hopefully start a new streak of bigger and better scores.

Three winners on top in six races (Belmont, $6.60; Delaware, $14.80; Hollywood, $2.80). That makes for a smidge over 100% ROI in the win-only category.

Otherwise we had the cold exacta ($17.60/$2) and tri ($36.60/$2) in the Mother Goose at Belmont. And a decent cold exacta ($44.20/$2) at Delaware.

And don't let anyone tell you we don't appreciate it when the god's of racing look favorably upon us. Our nice score at Delaware was predicated upon a double-DQ -- a racetrack rarity. We only been the beneficiary of such an occurrence once before -- many moons ago, and to the best of our recollection it was a double-DQ in the Fall Highweight at one of the NYRA tracks, but we'd have to check the record books to be sure.

But on Saturday lady luck was looking our way and we moved up on the double-DQ into a cold exacta. However, we won't apologize for our good fortune because if you play with some consistency -- and we think we do -- as the saying goes, Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you... In other words, we were on the winning side today, but on other similar occasions we've wound up on the short-end of the stick. It all evens out in the end...

Best Bets
It was a successful week with the Best Bets. As you might have been able to tell, we had some opinions this week, and thus took eight whacks at it. We managed three winners in eight races and those three combined to give us a healthy 49% ROI on the day.

As noted above, we realize that our double-DQ win at Delaware is a little bit flukey, but as we said, over time these things even out so we don't feel the need to apologize for the win. We been on the other side of these things just as many times as not...

We have now officially passed the six-month mark with our Best Bet plays and have managed to reap an astounding 91% ROI over that time period. For a full scorecard of the past six months, including monthly totals and week-by-week archive, visit our Best Bets Six Month Update page.

Spun Sugar...Proved she was stake-quality last time with convincing win in G2 Black-Eyed Susan.
Summerly...Should be winging on the front-end early and will be tough to catch if not pushed.

Jet Prospector...Capable on best.
Gators N Bears...Dud last time is a little bit of a concern but if able to rebound back to top form he'll be tough.

Seeking Slew...Very lightly raced Mott 3YO will need to step it up in stakes debut but big win last time could signal a good one in the making.
