Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Interesting afternoon that just shows the razor's edge between victory and defeat. We started things off well with the cold $77.00/$2 exacta in the Peter Pan at Belmont, but then spent most of the rest of the day chasing our tail. As predicted it was a particularly contentious card. Still, with only minor success we were perhaps only a length away from moving into positive wagering territory with our bankroll.

Our top two completed that nice exacta in the Peter Pan and our third and fourth picks, Sir Greeley and Chekhov respectively, both looked to be making solid moves at the top of the stretch. Sir Greeley faded, but Chekov continued on -- unfortunately missing third by a length. If that one had gotten up and completed our tri box we probably would have added another $100+ to the totals (as it was the tri paid $396.00/$2 with a 5-1 running third, Chekov was 3-2).

On the win-end we had one winner on top in eight tries (Belmont, $12.80).

WAGERED: $292.00
COLLECTED: $185.70

Best Bets

We struggled with the Best Bets just as much as with the plays above. Nothing popped out at us this week and they ran like they looked on paper -- a little bit inscrutable. But Lord Robyn and Nyramba gave us decent tries -- looking much the same, sitting just behind the early leader. Clearly that's not where Lord Robyn wants to be and while he looked to contend coming into the lane he faded late. Nyramba hung on a little longer but also didn't have the needed punch in the late going. As for Sunny Sky, we liked his US debut last fall and we were hoping he could rebound to that form off of a couple of dull 2005 efforts -- but now it looks like either that race last year was a bit of a fluke, or perhaps he simply hasn't matured as a 3YO.

Calder, Race 7, Lord Robyn... 4th at 8-5.
Hollywood, Race 6, Nyramba... 6th at 3-1.
Hollywood, Race 8, Sunny Sky... 6th at 8-1.

Belmont: Peter Pan G3 $200K

Oratory 5-1
Reverberate 9-1
Golden Man 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Oratory.
Collected $46.50 on the WP ($12.80, 5.80).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $77.00 on the ex box ($77.00/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $38.50 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Oratory...Lightly raced and looks to be ready for this assignment.
Reverberate...Might be tough to catch if able to sneak away early.
Sir Greeley...Going turf-to-dirt and would be no surprise if able to repeat last main track effort.
Chekhov.

Monmouth: JJ Reilly H'cp $60K

War's Prospect 7-5
Quiet Desperation 5-2
Upturn 5-2

Wager: $5 WP on Dutrow entry.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $8.70 on the ex box ($17.40/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $15.00 on the tri box ($30.00/$2).

Dutrow entry...Upturn preferred with return to state-breds but Dixie Two Thousand has the amazing 47% first-out for trainer stat.
War's Prospect...Showed speed and faded last time. Should be fitter today and find this field a little softer.
Quiet Desperation...Would probably rate as top pick except for the long layoff.
Fourthirteen.

Monmouth: Red Bank H'cp G3 $150K

American Freedom 11-1
Spruce Run 13-1
Royal Affrimed 8-1

Trade Fair, Tap Day scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Remind.
Ran 5th at 6-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 4-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 4-5-6.

Remind...Mott trainee came into this race last year out of the Fort Marcy and just missed. Coming in off of a nice try in the Fort Marcy again.
Trade Fair...Like the set-up Frankel turfer brings in with two improving efforts since arriving stateside.
Cottage...Pletcher 7YO is very consistent but not on the top-end lately.
Tap Day.
Big Booster.

Delaware: Go For Wand $100K

Dance Away Capote 2-5
Gotta Rush 14-1
Last Toots 5-2

Bayou Breeze scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Bayou Breeze.
Scratched.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4.

Bayou Breeze...Looks to be a nice, improving 3YO filly that should be ready for this test.
Lucky Slevin...Let's toss the latest. Will be tough if able to rebound to prior good form.
Dance Away Capote...Only making third start as a 3YO and could be sitting on a good one today.
Last Toots.

Calder: Simply Majestic $75K

Dream On Dream On 8-1
Magic Speed 13-1
Talented Prince 7-1

Wager: $5 WP on Lord Robyn.
Ran 4th at 8-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-4-6-11.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-6-11.

Lord Robyn...This is a pure horse-for-course angle as this one was a little dull in last three "away from home" but is undefeated over the Calder turf. Works says he still appreciates the home cooking.
Turk's Ransom...Last couple might have set her up for a big try.
Dream On Dream On...Jumped up and ran her best yet lat time and might simply be rounding into very good form.
Nicandro.

Churchill: Winning Colors $100K

Molto Vita 6-5
Heavenly Humor 7-2
Born to Dance 5-1

Ebony Breeze completed $57.40/$2 super.

Wager: $5 WP on Ebony Breeze.
Ran 4th at 2-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$2 tri key Ebony Breeze over next three.
Ran 4/1-2-3.
...$1 tri key Heavenly Humor over next three.
Ran 2/1-3-4.

Ebony Breeze...She'e always been talents but a little inconsistent as to when she would show up with her best. Took her awhile to get her legs under her this season but would be tough if able to repeat latest.
Heavenly Humor...Threw in a clunker in G1 last time after going well in NoCal. Might be better today with that trip over the track under her belt.
Molto Vita...Showing good improvement in three 2005 starts.
Born to Dance.

Hollywood: Tranquility Lake $64K

Winendynem 5-2
Fencelineneighbor 17-1
Alozaina 19-1

Wager: $5 WP on Nyramba.
Ran 6th at 3-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-6-8.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-6-8.

Nyramba...Looks like Drysdale has her back where she belongs -- on turf -- and the long line of longer workouts seems to indicate she's well-meant.
Winendynme...Stretches out off of two improving sprints. Love that angle.
Chasethegold...Third off the layoff. Should be fit.
Addario.

Hollywood: Will Rogers G3 $100K

Osidy 7-5
Willow O Wisp 18-1
Eastern Sand 5-2

Juliesugardaddy scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Sunny Sky.
Ran 6th at 8-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-6.

Sunny Sky...Impressed with a near-miss last year in first US try. Has yet to duplicate that effort so this pick is iffy -- but showed some improvement from start #1 to start #2 of 2005 so maybe he's ready for a big one.
Eastern Sand...Hasn't missed an exacta since moving to turf.
Juliesugardaddy...Another that stepped up on grass. Undefeated in three turf starts.
Osidy.
