Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

We were chasing our tail most of the afternoon -- as promised when we wrote beforehand that the card "will be treacherous to dive into too deeply," that proved to be the case.

Only two winners in ten races (Keeneland, $28.80; Bay Meadows, $5.00), but with 13-1 Coin Silver among that duo the ROI in the win-department was noteworthy.

Otherwise, short fields made us modify our usual betting template in some races -- and it cost us at Aqueduct as we keyed tri's, only to see our numbers come in in a boxed fashion in the Bed o Roses. As such, we missed the $138.50/$2 exacta and $403.00/$2 tri. Similar scenario in the Tesio at Pimlico cost us a $45.80/$2 exacta and $100.40/$2 tri. In a six-betting interest field sometimes you have to take a stand, in this case we were bitten on the behind and missed payoffs that would have pushed us into the black. C'est la vie.

WAGERED: $340.00
COLLECTED: $181.00

Best Bets

Struggled a little bit with the plays above but the good news on the afternoon was down here in the Best Bets section. 13-1 Coin Silver provided a nice boost to the bankroll and together with Castledale accounted for the whopping 323% ROI on the win-end.

Overall it's been just about four months since we added the Best Bets feature to the Coast-to-coast page and we have looked at a total of 59 races in that time. A $2 win wager on each Best Bet would have cost $118.00 and would have returned $123.70.

So at this point in 2005 we're holding our own with just about a 5% ROI.

Keeneland, Race 9, Coin Silver... WON (28.80, 10.00, 5.60).
Keeneland, Race 10, Argento... Scratched.
Pimlico, Race 8, Byanosejoe... 3rd at 3-5 (xxx, xxx, 2.20).
Bay Meadows, Race 7, Castledale... WON (5.00, 3.20, 2.60).
Hollywood, Race 8, Mea Domina... 4th at 1-1.

Aqueduct: Ft Marcy Hcp G3 $100K

Better Talk Now 4-5
Remind 7-2
Ecclesiastic 12-1

Wager: $5 WP on Remind.
Collected $8.75 on the WP (xxx, 3.50).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $11.00 on the ex box ($11.00/$2).
...$2 tri key Remind over next three.
Ran 2/1-4-5.

Remind...Third start back off long layoff for Mott. Wired nice field of optional claimers at Gulfstream last time.
Better Talk Now... 2004 BC Turf champ might need one or two before hitting top form -- but this isn't a stellar field.
Chilly Rooster...Second to top pick in latest. Jock is a tough sell for us in a graded stake -- but pair won this event last year.
L'Oiseau d'Argent.

Aqueduct: Bed o Roses Hcp G3 $150K

Pleasant Home 8-1
Traci Girl 8-1
Cativa 1-1

Wager: $5 WP on Bank Audit.
Ran 5th at 8-5.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$2 tri key Bank Audit over next three.
Ran 5/1-2-3.

Bank Audit...Seems to be at the top of her game and won G2 stake over this strip last time.
Cativa/Childress... Cativa preferred. Was favored against top pick last time and tossed in a clunker. Look for a rebound. Childress also capable on best.
Pleasant Home...Could be rounding into top form.
Traci Girl.

Keeneland: Stravinsky $100K

Tara's Touch 7-2
Shaunavon 4-1
Singit 29-1

Wager: $5 WP on Gold Vault.
Ran 11th at 10-1 (never in it after breaking poorly).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-11.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-11.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 2-4-5-11.

Gold Vault...Might prove interesting on if able to maintain that front-end speed cutting back in distance.
Shaunavon...Bona fide turf sprinter looks like the one to beat.
Polish Affair...Looks to contend in here.
Mocha Queen.

Keeneland: Lexington G2 $325K

Coin Silver 13-1
Sort It Out 6-1
Storm Surge 8-1

Skye'n Thunder scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Coin Silver.
Collected $97.00 on the WP (28.80, 10.00).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-6.

Coin Silver...Could be ready for this assignment and Pletcher had already done well with a couple of like-raced 3YOs this season.
Rockport Harbor...Clearly the one to beat if ready. But that's the question mark -- too many setbacks to take this guy on top with confidence.
Skye'n Thunder...Could prove to be another interesting bullet in Lukas' holster.
Going Wild.

Pimlico: Frederico Tesio $150K

Malibu Moonshine 3-1
Hello Jerry 8-1
Byanosejoe 3-5

Wager: $5 WP on Byanosejoe.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$3 tri key Byanosejoe over next three.
Ran 3/1-2-6.

Byanosejoe...Gave a good account of himself in Gotham despite trouble.
Malibu Moonshine...Interesting career -- he either wins or finishes off-the-board, which makes this pick tenuous!
Legal Control...Last looks like a toss. Expect better today.
Hello Jerry.

Pimlico: Jim McKay BC Hcp $200K

Presidentialaffair 5-2
Classic Endeavor 9-5
Hydrogen 4-1

Aggadan, Bahama John scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Cherokee Rap.
Ran 4th at 2-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-4.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.
Ran 2-3-4.

Cherokee Rap...Clearly in the best form of career.
Aggadan...Interesting if he goes. Fourth in opt clm at Aqueduct on Wednesday, Dutrow's are usually well-meant if wheeled back quickly.
Classic Endeavor...Yeesh, let's hope the last was a fluke. Previous form puts him right there.
Hydrogen.
Bahama John.

Hawthorne: National Jockey Club Hcp G3 $250K

Pollard's Vision 2-1
Badge of Silver 1-2
Lord of the Game 5-1

Seek Gold scratched.

...$10 exacta Badge of Silver over Pollard's Vision.
Ran 2/1.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Collected $30.00 on the ex box ($12.00/$2).

Badge of Silver...Looks to be at the top of his game -- and should take this if able to maintain that good form.
Pollard's Vision...Let's look for a move forward in third start of season.
Seek Gold...Perhaps he didn't like Gulfstream.
Lord of the Game.

Hawthorne: Sixty Sails Hcp G3 $250K

Isola Piu Bella 2-1
Rare Gift 7-1
Ghostly Gate 15-1

Wager: $5 WP on Personal Legend.

...$5 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$2 tri key Personal Legend over next three.
Ran 4/1-5-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-4-5-6.

Personal Legend...In a little tough in SoCal G1s last couple. Should find this spot to her liking.
Isola Piu Bella...Looked like a good one winning second US start then was caught in a tough spot behind the loose speed last time. The one to beat.
Freil's for Real...Won over half her starts. Typically in the hunt.
Injustice.

Bay Meadows: San Fran BC Mile Hcp G2 150K

Castledale 3-2
Adreamisborn 3-1

...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $8.50 on the ex box ($17.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.

Castledale...Certainly seems at home on turf and last indicates he's back in top form.
Terroplane...Also looks to be coming into this race ready to give his best shot.
Gold Ruckus/Adreamisborn...Adreamisborn preferred. Goes out for the always formidable NoCal team of Hollendorfer/Baze.

Makeup Artist.
