Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

We squeaked out a modest profit on the day. Three winners in six races -- we lost the Santa Anita feature when it was moved to the main track (Laurel, $4.00; Gulfstream, $3.20; Oaklawn, $3.00). We managed to grab a small cold exacta ($9.00/$2) and tri ($33.60) in the Campbell at Laurel. That was nice because after scratches we only had three picks going. And we had a cold exacta at Gulfstream ($10.60). But our best payoff of the afternoon came at Fair Grounds -- although our top pick ran out, our other three combined for a nice exacta and tri.

And so we live to fight another day...

WAGERED: $245.00
COLLECTED: $298.70

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets, 2/19/05
We lost one play when the Fair Grounds 7th was moved to the main track. Our other two were both plenty live coming into the lane but couldn't sustain.

Gulfstream, Race 11, Baena... Ran 3rd at 2-1 (xxx, xxx, 2.60).
Fair Grounds, Race 7, Prince of a Deal... Race moved off turf.
Fair Grounds, Race 9, May Gator... Ran 6th at 9-2.

Aqueduct: Fred 'Cappy' Capossela $75K

Distinctive Trick 22-1
Pavo 3-1
Benjamin Baby 3-1

Wager: $5 W on Attila's Storm.
Ran 4th at 1-1.
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-5.
...$2 tri key Attila's Storm over next three.
Ran 4/2-3-5.

Attila's Storm...SoCal invader is a maiden but has the look of the real-deal and doesn't find anything too scary in this stakes field.
Summerland...Interesting that they shipped to Florida for a relatively short stay -- and came back for this.
Benjamin Baby...Stepped up big-time in latest -- but it could have been aided by wet track condition.
Pavo.

Laurel: JB Campbell BC H'cp $125K

Coast Line 1-1
Offlee Wild 3-2
Ole Faunty 6-1

Hydrogen scratched.

Wager: $5WP on Coast Line.
Collected $16.00 on the WP (4.00, 2.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $9.00 on the ex box ($9.00/$2).
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $4.50 on the ex box.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $16.80 on the tri box ($33.60/$2).

Coast Line...Has breezed through conditions since breaking maiden for Pletcher. Finds a fairly soft spot for stakes debut.
Offlee Wild...The one to beat if able to recapture top form in first start off of eight months break. But that's the question, isn't it?
Hydrogen...Certainly capable of grabbing a share.
Ole Faunty.

Laurel: Barbara Fritchie H'cp G2 $200K

Cativa 5-1
Sensibly Chic 2-1
Silmaril 12-1

Wager: $5WP on Sensibly Chic.
Collected $10.00 on the WP (xxx, 4.00).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $30.90 on the ex box ($61.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-5-8.

Sensibly Chic...Has had trouble in prior graded tries but big win last time might signal she's in top form, and/or she really, really likes this track.
Bear Fan...Came out of a loss in the Sunshine Millions to win this race last year. Same set-up today -- but we're just a little leery since this year's SM race was a comeback effort and left the feeling that he might need another race or two. We'll see.
Cativa...Came back from long layoff to beat Lavender Lass -- and that one followed-up with a stakes win. Tough if able to move forward.
Wallop.

Gulfstream: Shirley Jones H'cp G2 $150K

Madcap Escapade 3-5
Alix M 9-2
D'Wildcat Speed 19-1

Wager: $5WP on Madcap Escapade.
Collected $14.50 on the WP (3.20, 2.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $10.60 on the ex box ($10.60/$2).
...$2 tri key Madcap Escapade over next three.
Ran 1/2-4-7.
...$1 tri key Alix M over other three.
Ran 2/1-4-7.

Madcap Escapade...Tough spot for a comeback but have a sneaking suspicion she'll be ready. Note the very nice 6F work on 1/31.
Alix M...Yet to miss the board in ten lifetime tries. Nice win last time in SM F/M Sprint despite a little trouble.
Society Selection...Rounded to top form at Saratoga last summer and faced some of the top of her division. Off since BC but should be heard from if ready.
Slews Final Answer.

Fair Grounds: Bayou BC H'cp G3 $125K

Shadow Cast 2-1
Bijou 18-1
Sister Swank 9-5

Wager: $5WP on May Gator.
Ran 6th at 9-2.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $47.40 on the ex box ($94.80/$2).
...$1 tri key May Gator over next three.
Ran 6/1-2-3.
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $130.30 on the tri box ($260.60/$2).

May Gator...Toss last -- she's better on turf. Off the better part of two months but nice bullet work on 2/11 says she's ready.
Shadow Cast...Perfect in two stakes since arriving at Fair Grounds. Speedy work on 2/8 seems to indicate she's holding her form -- but what about that dawdling work last time -- just stretching her legs?
Sister Swank...Favored in the Pago Hop and was a just-miss third. Will be in the mix again today.
Bijou.

Oaklawn: Southwest $100K

Greater Good 1-2
Munificence 7-2
Humor At Last 5-1

Wager: $5WP on Great Good.
Collected $13.50 on the WP (3.00, 2.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-6.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $5.20 on the ex box ($10.40/$2).
...$1 tri key Greater Good over next three.
Ran 1/2-4-6.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-6.

Greater Good...G2 stakes winner looks a tad better than these. But there's always a question mark when coming back from a layoff.
Silver Haze...Just have a feeling this guy might be ready for a big try.
Copy My Notes...Seemed to have figured it out in his finale last season.
Munificence.

Santa Anita: San Luis Obispo H'cp G2 $150K

Off turf -- moved to main track
License To Run 3-2
Californian 45-1
TH Approval 4-1

Wager: $5WP on License To Run.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.
Wagers canceled -- moved off turf.

License To Run...Looks to be set up to run a big one for Frankel.
Continental Red...9YO retains good form and has improving Beyers in three starts since return. Just missed in this race last year.
Special Matter...Kind of an in-and-outer -- but looks to contend for a gimmick spot amongst the rest of this bunch.
TH Approval.
