Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Five winners in a dozen races (Fair Grounds, $3.40; Gulfstream, $3.40, 4.00, 4.20; Santa Anita, $3.60). As is indicated by the win prices -- we didn't catch a whole lotta value Saturday. Besides the small prices on top, we managed to grab a bagful of various gimmicks -- but they similarly didn't offer much to shout about in the payoff department. Short fields kept our plays conservative and so, it is what it is on a day like that...

WAGERED: $334.00
COLLECTED: $188.90

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets, 2/05/05

Sante Croca 6-1

Wager: $5 W on Bank Audit.
Ran 2nd.
...$10 exacta Bank Audit over Lavendar Lass.
Ran 2/1.
...$5 exacta Bank Audit over Travelator.
Ran 2/5.

Bank Audit...Clearly an improved animal over last three efforts. A repeat of last is enough here.
Lavendar Lass...Looks to be rounding into top form.
Travelator...Another that appears to be returning to best form.
High Peaks.

Laurel: Miracle Wood $75K

Malibu Moonshine/entry 2-1
Legal Control 9-5
Seize 3-1

Monster Chaser scratched.

Ran 2-9.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $11.50 on the ex box ($23.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-9.

Legal Control...Really rounded to good form to end 2004 -- capped by big win in Md Juv Champ.
He's Lookin Good...Claimed four back for $16K and improving steadily since.
Woody's Apache/Malibu Moonshine...Both look capable of picking up a piece here.
Monster Chaser.

Fair Grounds: Pan Zareta $60K

Souris 3-5
Silver Crown 11-1
Crow Jane 22-1

Wager: $5 WP on Souris.
Collected $15.00 on the WP (3.40, 2.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$2 tri key Souris over next two.
Ran 1/4-5.

Souris...Comes out of two solid stakes wins for Asmussen.
Forest Music...She's clearly going to be the one to catch.
Stirrin Up a Storm.

Oaklawn: King Cotton $50K

Deputy Storm 7-1
Engineered 8-1
Level Playingfield 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on Level Playingfield.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.

Level Playingfield...Horse lilkes the track and the trip and trainer is off to a good start at the meet.
Deputy Storm...Really debated about putting this one on top -- he might jet out of gate and not look back, but he shuld have some company early and fade job last time is a minor concern.
That Tat...Is part of the gimmicks more often than not.
Pro Prado.

Gulfstream: Old Hat G3 $100K

Maddalena 3-5
Alfonsina 9-2
Aspen Tree 5-1

Wager: $5 WP on Maddalena.
Collected $14.50 on the WP (3.40, 2.40).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-5.
...$2 tri key Maddalena over next three.
Collected $30.20 on the tri key ($30.20/$2).

Maddalena...2-2 so far. Won debut in April then sat out until facile victory in January NW1 return. Hard to ignore the impressive number.
Portsea...Could complete a Pletcher exacta. Off since fade job in G2 Spinaway made return in small stake at Tampa and won nicely.
Aspen Tree...Won in debut and has since just missed in two efforts -- including a $100K stake at Churchill. Dangerous.

Gulfstream: Hutcheson G2 $150K

Proud Accolade 4-5
Park Avenue Ball 14-1
Vicarage 9-1

Wager: $5 WP on Devil At Sea.
Ran 5th at 5-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 4-5.
...$2 tri key Devil At Sea over next three.
Ran 5/1-2-4.

Devil At Sea...Solid win in December debut. Came back to look good in mid-stretch in NW1, only to be caught by the fave late. That experience could count today.
Defer...Graded stakes winner has only one loss on resume and it was against Rockport Harbor.
Proud Accolade...Might appreciate the return to a one-turn trip.
Park Avenue Ball.

Gulfstream: Davona Dale G2 $150K

Sis City 1-1
In the Gold 5-2
Jill Robin L 17-1

Kristen Kristen scratched.

...$2 exacta box top two.
Collected $9.00 on the ex box ($9.00/$2).
...$4 tri key Sis City over next three.
Ran 1/2-5.

Sis City...Looks to have the pace at her mercy. Could duplicate wire job she used to win G2 Demoiselle.
In the Gold...Toss the Churchill try and this Zito filly has a solid record.
Dance Away Capote...Will be rolling late.
Kristen Kristen.

Gulfstream: Deputy Minister H'cp G3 $100K

Medallist 1-1
Mister Fotis 11-1
Kela 1-1

Forest Danger scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Forest Danger.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$2 tri key Forest Danger over next three.

Forest Danger...Seemed to be developing into a potential superstar for Pletcher early last year. Off since running second to Medallist last May but expect he'll be ready for return.
Medallist...Strung a couple of big wins together last summer so that might bode well coming off of a return to good form in last.
Kela...Also capable of throwing in a monster effort when in the mood. Just missed in BC Sprint two back with Bailey onboard.
Paradise Dancer.

Gulfstream: Donn H'cp G1 $500K

Saint Liam 9-5
Roses in May 6-5
Eddington 3-1

Wager: $5 W on Roses in May.
Ran 2nd.
...$5 exacta Roses in May over Saint Liam.
Ran 2/1.
...$5 exacta box top two.
Collected $28.50 on the ex box ($11.40/$2).

Roses in May...Expect a battle between this one and Saint Liam -- how big a battle will decide what happens but this one just looks to have enough class to get the job done here.
Saint Liam...Took Ghostzapper through some blazing fractions in Woodward and just missed.

Gulfstream: Holy Bull G3 $150K

Closing Argument 7-1
Kansas City Boy 11-1
High Fly 3-5

Wager: $5 WP on High Fly.
Ran 3rd.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-5.

High Fly...Undeafeated and impressive in stakes debut last time.
Dearest Mon...Nice improving form in three starts. Beat Devil At Sea last time so watch that one in the Hutcheson to get a line on this guy.
Criminal Mind...Always in the mix and ran second behind Pletcher's promising Harlington last time.
Closing Argument.

Santa Anita: Sham $100K

Going Wild 5-1
Papi Chullo 8-1
Giacomo 7-5

Iced Out scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Chekhov.
Ran 5th at 5-1.
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 3-5.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 3-4-5.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 3-4-5.

Chekhov...Has yet to live up to $3 mil+ purchase price in two starts -- but might have some legit upside still to show. None of these have been revealed as a star yet so it's a good spot for him.
Giacomo...Ran a very good second to 2YO champ Declan's Moon last time.
Iced Out...Improving numbers with each start.
Uncle Denny.

Santa Anita: Strub G2 $300K

Rock Hard Ten 4-5
Imperialism 7-1
Love of Money 3-1

Wager: $5 WP on Rock Hard Ten.
Collected $16.00 on the WP (3.60, 2.80).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-3.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $10.00 on the ex box ($20.00/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Collected $31.20 on the tri box ($62.40/$2).

Rock Hard Ten...Returned to the races in a very tough G1 -- the 7F Malibu. The win in that stake could signal he's going to be a contender in the older division this year.
Love of Money...Might rate him higher expect the layoff is a concern. Trainer is OK there however and he might be able to control things up front.
Castledale...Still have a soft spot for this one after he came in for us at 30-1 in last year's G1 Santa Anita Derby. Returned from long layoff with an even effort last time -- expect better today.
