Picks and plays for some of the day's major stakes

Certainly we hit a home-run on the win-end of things. Four top selections won in six races (two races fell off our original slate of eight as Aqueduct canceled and rain washed the turfer onto the main track at Santa Anita). Our two other top picks ran second, including one that was moved down from the top spot on a DQ at Pimlico.

Overall a $2 win bet on each top selection would have cost $12 and would have returned a healthy $28.20 (Gulfstream, $8.20, 9.80, 6.40; Fair Grounds, 3.80). That's a happy 135% ROI!

The three stakes we scored on at Gulfstream comprised their late Pick Three, and our three top picks grabbed that $221.00/$2 play as well as the $38.00/$2 late double. It was a good day for us at Gulfstream overall -- we made our monthly appearance on the Capital OTB TV Network here in upstate NY and the Florida track was our assignment for the day. We managed to tap five winners on the nine race card. We opened with the early double and closed with the last three.

Ironically in our new Best Bets section we played two races from Gulfstream, but they were two that we didn't hit! Although the near-miss with 9-1 Devil At Sea was close enough to feel good about.

Wagering-wise here on the C2C page we had one of those afternoons that frustrates as the top-heavy handicapping wasn't supported by the underneath picks. We struggled to complete out exotic plays. But, with the winners we can walk away feeling good about the day.

WAGERED: $254.00
COLLECTED: $140.90

Turf wagers are turf only

Best Bets, 1/1/05

The handicapping was pretty solid. Only Hold a Moonbeam really disappointed although Jerry Bailey saved all the ground with that one and loomed large at the top of the stretch -- but she couldn't sustain. Otherwise, Devil At Sea looked super at a good price turning for home but just couldn't quite outlast the favorite.

We came under the line first in the other two races -- unfortunately Maysville was DQ'd to the place position.

Ultimately, on the win-end we went 1-4 ($3.80).

Gulfstream, Race 3, Hold a Moonbeam.
...Ran 9th at 9-2.
Gulfstream, Race 5, Devil At Sea.
...Ran 2nd by a half at 9-1 (xxx, 8.00, 7.00).
Pimlico, Race 8, Maysville.
...Won but DQ'd to 2nd at 7-5 (xxx, 3.20, 2.60).
Fair Grounds, Race 8, Crimson Stag.
...Won at 4-5 (3.80, 2.80, 2.10)

Aqueduct: Count Fleet $75K

Canceled after the first three races due to track conditions.

No wagers.
Wager: $5 WP on Killenaule.
...$2 exacta box top two.
...$1 exacta box top four.
...$1 tri box top four.

Killenaule...Pletcher trainee ran third behind Rockport Harbor and Galloping Grocer last time. This bunch is easier.
Tani Maru...Stakes-placed and looks to be improving for hot trainer.
Naughty New Yorker...Dusted a NY-bred stakes field last time and fits with these.
Scrappy T.

Gulfstream: Aventura $125K

High Fly 3-1
Drum Major 33-1
Magna Graduate 8-1

Wager: $5 WP on High Fly.
Collected $34.50 on the WP (8.20, 5.60).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-10.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-5-10-12.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-5-10-12.

High Fly...Like the angle of stretching out to one-turn mile off of two sprints.
Deputy Indy...Debut was very good and blasted a bullet Wednesday morning at Palm Meadows.
Wahran...Looks to be improving and could get the job done with a clean trip.
D'Court's Speed.

Gulfstream: Mr Prospector H'cp G3 $100K

Saratoga County 7-2
Limehouse 9-2
All Hail Stormy 29-1

Wager: $5 WP on Saratoga County.

...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-8.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-7-8-9.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-7-8-9.

Saratoga County...Showed some promise early in his career and then disappointed through most of 3YO season. However, things seemed to turn around at end of year and recent works are too good to ignore.
Strength and Honor...Strung a couple of nice wins together at Churchill.
Shake You Down...Probably needed the comebacker two back. Last was a good win. Ready for today.
Thunder Touch.

Gulfstream: Hal's Hope H'cp G3 $100K

Badge of Silver 2-1
Dynever 3-1
Contante 21-1

Wager: $5 WP on Badge of Silver.
Collected $25.50 on the WP (6.40, 3.80).
...$4 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-7.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Collected $11.40 on the ex box ($22.80/$2).
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-2-4-7.

Badge of Silver...Gets nod on having perhaps being a smidge more 'battle-tested' than Commentator. This 5YO has only eight lifetime starts but he is a stakes-winner and place effort in the G1 Cigar Mile looked good.
Commentator...Five race. Five wins. All by open lengths. Would be no surprise -- but is trying two turns for first time and this is probably toughest bunch he's faced thus far.
Dynever...Hard to call a winner of almost $1,5 mil an under-achiever -- but this guy is having trouble getting to the winner's circle. But you can't leave him out of the mix.
Added Edge.

Pimlico: Marshua $50K

Rush to Glory 6-1
DQ - Maysville 7-5
Promenade Girl 7-1

Collected $8.00 on the WP (xxx, 3.20).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 2-4.
...$4 tri key Maysville over next three.
Ran 2/1-4-5.

Maysville...Had trouble and still won first two easily.
Flashy Three...Second in a stake last time despite trouble.
Patty Girl...Another that has performed well in the face of some mishaps.
Rush to Glory.

Fair Grounds: Crescent City Derby $75K

Crimson Stag 4-5
Zarb's Music Man 29-1
Prince T 7-2

Wager: $5 WP on Crimson Stag.
Collected $16.50 on the WP (3.80, 2.80).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Ran 1-4.
...$1 exacta box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-7.
...$1 tri box top four.
Ran 1-3-4-7.

Crimson Stag...Impressive winner when entered against state-breds.
Surgeon of Choice...Improving and a solid winner when tried around two turns.
Prince T...Moving forward with each start.
St Roch.

Santa Anita: San Gorgonio H'cp G2 $150K

Race moved to main track. No wagers.

Wager: $5 WP on Megahertz, sub next if scratch.
...$2 exacta box top two, sub next if scratch.
...$1 exacta box top four, sub next if scratch.
...$1 tri box top four, sub next if scratch.

Megahertz...With the turf expected to be a bog after all the rain this one is probably likely to scratch. But it she stays in, and the race stays on the turf, she's clearly best.
Ask for the Moon...Euro's have an advantage over soft going.
Theater RN...Barnmate of top pick is a very lightly raced 5YO but has the potential to show up big.
Hoh Buzzard.
Uraib.

Santa Anita: San Pasqual G2 $150K

Congrats 3-1
Total Impact 1-1
Sigfreto 12-1

Lundy's Liability scratched.

Wager: $5 WP on Total Impact.
Collected $7.00 on the WP (xxx, 2.80).
...$2 exacta box top two.
Scratched.
...$2 tri key Total Impact over next three.
Ran 2/1-5.
...$1 tri key Lundy's Liability over other three.
Scratched.

Total Impact...Feel a little hinky about taking one on the rebound from Japan trip -- but if able to recapture good form from last fall he's the one to beat.
Lundy's Liability...Plenty of early foot -- but the top pick has that too. One of them should be around late -- but which one?
Congrats...Let's see if Mandella has figured this guy out in second start for his barn. Has some wet track success and will contend on best.
Formal Attire.
