Here's a sample of some of the headlines that were featured Thursday
>>> Funny Cide's only race now is to feel better, "I expect him to run at Belmont. The Jerome (Sept. 13) is a possibility."
>>> Chi-town scribe gives some thoughts on contenders in this weekend's BC Future Wager
>>> Euro-invader Hold That Tiger expected for Belmont's Woodward
>>> Frankel's losses mount... Trainer not discouraged by drought, promises to keep plugging along, "You know, I won $700,000 in purses over the weekend and I probably won more money than any other trainer in the country without winning a race."
And our Coast-to-Coast picks and plays for major weekend stakes races will return in September.
YOU ARE THERE Check out the new YOU ARE THERE feature. We bring you the action, both on-track and off, for the entire Saratoga race meet.
1-9. A tough card and that was obvious beforehand. Four maiden races. A couple of claimers. And a steeplechase feature. Five winners on the card paid more than $20.
For us, a winner on top in the7th (6.70). And, as on previous days where we've been light on the winner-end, we had a gimmick or two that saved the day. Thursday it was in that 7th race where our top pick won, followed by our third and fourth choices. That allowed us to grab a nice exacta ($51.50/$2) and tri ($243.50).
On-track, another nice day weather-wise and 17,494 attended. And there's still plenty of action around town as the sidewalks of Broadway were full of strollers during the post-diner evening hours.
Sunshine Brian...Nice alw win at Delaware two back. Should go well dropping in for a tag.
Smoker...Scary if able to repeat the big number from the maiden score. Pletcher/Velazquez.
Flip And Stu...Might go well with the drop and on a fast track.
Nick The Vest...Should give a good account of self with return to turf. Must get in from AE list.
Old Crow...Showed marked improvement in first start of season. Regressed a little last time when on dirt. Tough if able to repeat the prior effort.
Captain Smith...Could prove difficult to run down if able to get an easy lead.
On dirt: Lord Commando, Minaville, Nick The Vest, Coleslew, Voir Dire.
Source...Picked up last time by a solid claiming outfit. Has shown an affinity for the course in the past.
Straight A...Has been competitive in some minor Florida sprint stakes. Now goes for Lake.
City Of Peace...Might rate higher except the trainer is on an oh-fer.
Dance Fee...Experience counts and this gal has a couple of decent tries.
Sophisticated Babe...Can Dutrow squeeze out some improvement? We'll see.
Valid Acquisition...Another that is eligible to show better in second try.
UK Trick...Drops out of stakes into high-price claimer. Should find this competition more to liking.
Dyna Da Wyna...Another moving in for a tag and should go well.
Candybedandy...Pletcher/Velasquez filly might try to steal this up front.
On dirt: Dyna Da Wyna, Won Dozen Roses, Actcellent, Queen Isabel, Miss Dakota.
Hookshank...Trainer is good with 2YOs and expect this one to move forward in second start.
Southern Trial...Just missed in debut.
Tales Of Glory...Pletcher/Velazquez firster for Tabor.
Cat On A Rail.
Titanium Ghost...Probably needs to pop up the Beyer slightly -- but has room to improve and Mott is on a roll lately.
Celtic Memories...Likely to set the pace if in from AE list.
Hypnotist...Looks to be in good form and jock won a stake with him last time they teamed up.
It should be interesting to see how the odds shake out in this event. Pletcher's entry is undefeated and comes out of a Spa stakes win. But McGaughey's entry blasted a big maiden win...
Daydreaming...Bred to be a good one for McGaughey/Phipps and her first start indicated plenty of talent.
Ashado...Clearly the one to beat coming out of strong G2 Schuylerville win. A wet track will improve her chances.
Unbridled Beauty...Lukas/Bailey filly has placed in two stakes.
Polar Snow...Trainer can have them ready to roll debuting around two turns.
Gata Be Patient...Has run well so far on dirt -- should get a good trip today with Bailey onboard.
Kevin's Decision...Positive jock change and might try to steal it on the front end.
Zat Darn Cat.
