4-9. Well, we couldn't keep shooting those six-fers forever -- but four winners is still a respectable day.
Four winners on top (1st, 10.60; 3rd, 3.30; 7th, 3.20; 9th, 3.00). A little light on the gimmicks however. Top choice in the 1st and second pick in the 2nd combined for the $24.20/$2 double. Third and second choices added up to the $23.60 quinella and $36.20 exacta. And top choice over third pick for a slim $7.30/$2 exacta in the 7th.
On-track we finally had nice weather throughout. Really a perfect day for racing and a crowd of 18,000+ turned out. Gygistar made a successful return to the races, winning the 3rd. And McGaughey's Alchemist continued her march to eventual stakes competition by running her record to 3-3 and scoring nicely in her first try around two-turns in the 7th.
Off-track, downtown on Broadway, the street was jammed with revelers enjoying the musical acts at the Hat's Off celebration. The fun continued late into the night.
Keep your eyes open for some crazy hats -- it's the 12th annual Saratoga Hat Contest. Judging will be held in various categories after the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th races.
And the Hat's Off music festival continues tonight along Broadway. Musical acts of all genres perform for free all along Saratoga's main street. The action goes from 7-11PM.
On-track a super competitive card. We should see some decent odds and good value -- but that makes the handicapping a little tougher.
And every Saturday NYRA is offering a $500K guaranteed Pick Four.
Track super appeared on TV Sat morning and said turf condition today is "good to firm".
Cool Cafe...Just miss third with high Beyer in debut. A repeat will make this one tough to beat.
Cherokee Park...Showed some good speed then faded at 7F. Cuts back and picks up a more experienced pilot.
Salamaat...Mott has a good percentage second-time out.
Durimente...In a race full of drop-downs and layoffs this guy looks to be the only one coming in with some good form. We'll see.
Gram's Folly...Wasn't much in latest but drop might help return to previous form.
Susie's Poker...Showed some improvement over first two of '03, should be ready to go well today.
Value Plus...One-hole isn't necessarily a bonus in these sprints but this $1 mil Pletcher firster is working too well to ignore.
Crafty Player...Trainer is good with the babies.
Talkin Tough...Has shown improvement in first two. Similar move forward today makes him competitive here.
Irish Road...Ran an OK fourth first time against winners. That experience and drop back to best trip should allow Pletcher runner to return to winner's circle.
Jayar...Also seems to like the trip and picks up top jock to replace bugboy.
Looking Grand...NY-bred can be heard from on best.
Notorious Rogue...We always say, experience counts. And this one put in a nice try in debut and they can always move forward second try. A decent amount of improvement can make this guy competitive.
Bwana Charlie...Good second with decent Beyer in debut -- but Asmussen needs to start winning before we can back him on top.
Under Caution...Has been working well in Kentucky for debut.
He's Crafty...Tough call. Mott/Bailey combo back together again for this one -- but he's 4-0-2-1 at the trip. However, won nicely on the course last year so we'll give him a tepid nod considering connections.
Perfect Cut...Solid try last time in turf debut.
Limero...Went OK last time in first start off bench and first try in US. If able to step forward a little with that experience he'll compete here.
Wave The Sword.
Ghostzapper...Good things were anticipated from this Frankel 3YO after impressive debut last fall. Spent six months on bench however, missing Triple Crown trail. But return last month seems to indicate he's back and ready to impress again.
Savoy Special...Pletcher runner has plenty of speed. 2-2 at the trip. Drawback is the inside post.
Clock Stopper...Step back in distance and return to alw conditions should help.
Frankel entry...Heat Haze is 3-3, including two graded races, since moving to US and Frankel. Pertuisane also solid since arriving stateside.
Clement entry...Voodoo Dancer is simply one of the best turf females in the country. Mariensky will be the runner if the turf is soft.
Wonder Again...Loves the course. Has gone well at the trip. Makes third start of season.
Bird Town...Seems to have really come to hand winning last two, but G1's. Can continue if able to hold that good form.
Lady Tak...She might really appreciate return to sprint. A knock is the trainer who -- though one of the tops in the US -- just hasn't been solid at the Spa.
House Party...Jerkens filly will be heard from on best.
Quilled Bid...Likes the track. Likes the trip. Coming into this in good form.
Platinum Setting...Should be set for good effort in third start off bench. Gets Bailey. Might want more distance however.
Star Over The Bay...Won last time in third start off a long layoff. Should hold that form and go well again today.
